I LOVE the Green Action Food Co-op! Also known fondly as 'the hippy cupboard' by both volunteers and customers alike! I admit to being slightly biased, as I did volunteer at Green action for two years of my degree, but this only served to confirm my first impressions (which were positive to say the least!).
As a Leeds University student, when I first entered the student's union I didn't know what to expect but upon seeing 'Green Action Food Co-op' on the list of union shops in the foyer, I ventured downstairs to see what I could find. Almost literally a cupboard under the stairs, Green Action somehow manages to stock a pretty wide range of essentials, from delicious snacks to get you through the day, to nuts, seeds, pulses, muesli, cooking oil, washing up liquid, laundry liquid, sanitary products, tea and coffee...the list goes on...
I must recommend the Essentials brazil nut and chocolate chip flapjack...absolutely delicious, and completely vegan! I always used to buy one for a post-deadline treat!
Prices are AMAZINGLY cheap due to the fact that no rent is paid and all shop workers are volunteers so products are COST PRICE! They also have a Lembas catalogue from which you can order pretty much anything you could imagine and you can also order a weekly organic fruit and veg box or sack from nearby Goosemoor Organics. When the Lembas order comes in on a thursday there are unbelievably cheap pasties and cake available, though they are usually gone by the weekend!
If you want to use the shop it costs just £1 membership for a year, and this money goes towards improving facilities in the shop and educational/bonding trips for the volunteers.
The volunteers are a jolly lovely bunch and are very helpful. The shop usually becomes a bit of a hang out for customers, many of whom are students and will spend breaks there chatting away between mouthfuls of chocolate/sesame snaps! There is a very welcoming and warm atmosphere, helped by the yellow painted interior! Overall the Green Action Co-op is an amazing achievement and truly inspiring! read more
