I sent out a request for a quote to several landscapers. The owner of Green Earth Landscaping sent me a Yelp message soon after and asked me to contact their office to schedule a walkthrough for a quote. So far so good. When I called the office, I got voicemail and left a message. Almost immediately, I received a text from the same number. To my surprise, the person on the other end immediately told me they weren't interested. (See attached images.) I reached out to the owner again but never heard back. Several hours later, I received a call from one of their employees, but by then I'd already decided on another landscaper. I have been waiting for sufficient time to elapse to write this review in order to give Green Earth's work a chance to demonstrate durability as well as for them to have sufficient time to respond to issues that arose as a result of their work, and my requests for rectification. A little over a year ago I had Green Earth do some significant landscaping for me, from removing blackberries to installing a retaining wall, build a firepit area with large stonework, and a significant amount of mulchwork and native species planting. They did a pretty good job of removing blackberries, but they could have put more effort in as requested. They're still coming back. They did a lot of mulching for me, but failed to achieve 6" depth in all areas as requested. I had to order more mulch in order to meet specs for the city (HIP). They installed a firepit with a large gravel and sand base, with flagstone on top and a large stone staircase to it, to my specifications. While they could have helped with fire ring stone selection more, I'm overall happy with their work here. They built a retaining wall ~60' long, 3' high at most, which I had to mostly rebuild because it was built poorly with a lot of hammered-in rock fragments to support structurally, and was nowhere near flat at the top as requested. Not very fun to move 2-man stones all day long for days on end to fix poor workmanship that you already paid for. Finally, and perhaps most notably, they are not good at planting plants. Out of more than 100 plants I purchased through them, I planted a couple dozen in order to help; I like gardening anyway. Once I found out how they were planting the plants, it also was a bit of an experiment to see if technique mattered. I was taught by my lifelong greenthumb parents how to plant plants by teasing the roots of a potted plant, dig a hole larger than the root ball, ensure no air holes when filling the hole with good soil, build a border wall to encourage water retention, and water thoroughly while filling to ensure no air gaps. Their method was to put the plant (straight from the gallon container as a generally root-bound cylinder) on top of the exposed soil (they generally just moved the mulch aside, but in some cases actually dug a shallow 1-3" hole in the soil) without any additional attention, followed by pushing up the surrounding mulch to the sides of the root-bound cylinder. When I discussed this with them, I was told that the right way to do it was to have the crown above the ground, level with the top of the mulch (which was about 6" above the soil), and that this would encourage the roots to grow down into the soil. The lead told me that teasing the roots near the bottom was sufficient, but in removing all the dead and dying plants, I found that only a few actually had their roots teased at all - most were still rock-hard cylinders. Before they were even done, a couple dozen plants had died, and I had them replace them before they signed off on the work. After the fact, more than half of the plants they planted died, and the majority of the remainder required replanting in order to get them to survive. After I had replaced most dead plants, but not replanted those that were planted incorrectly but hadn't yet died, I had a horticulturist out at my place for unrelated reasons. They, unprompted, noticed the poor planting quality and trying to be nice, asked me if I planted them. I explained the situation, and they said that those plantings were done incorrectly as the roots were not in soil, and were drying out, and that's why they were dying. They went off on a bit of a rant about how bad the work was, and had some choice comments about how a landscaper should know better (they also corroborated my method of planting as correct). Now, I emailed Green Earth a few months back, still within their guarantee timeline, and explained how I gave their plantings a full winter and summer to see how they did in real life, with regular watering by myself, noting the significant attrition that had been caused by their poor methods as stated by an actual horticulturist. I outlined the costs incurred buying new plants as well as the cost of labor/time to pot the replacements, and repot the bad plantings. I received no reply. I was discussing this with the city, and they pointed out to me that Green Earth had a statement on their webpage that no one has taken them up on their installation guarantee. Not only did I require this guarantee while they were still working in my yard, I tried to get them to back their work with their guarantee after they had been paid in full, and they ignored me. So, it's not entirely true that they've never had to use their installation guarantee, as stated on their webpage. I will say it was mostly a pleasure dealing with them. They're all kind people. All in all, I will be giving another landscaper a chance for my next landscaping project. read more

He is not only reasonable, but honest and very caring for our yard loves what he is doing. It shows for sure. He planted everything around my house as there was nothing when we moved in. The shrubs, gravel, plants, trees..... Jonathan goes above and beyond. He climbs on my roof and blows all pine needles off and cleans up after. This has been a disappointing experience, to say the least. Promises were made before, during and at the end of work, and few were kept. I am waiting for completion of several major tasks, I was talked out of tasks that I understood they were going to perform without adjustment of billing, and Jonathan promised that he would finish work not completed "next week" and I am still waiting 3 weeks afterward. I am disappointed in the quality of a major portion of the work, the seed used to start a large section of the backyard is completely different in appearance to the existing lawn even though Jonathan assured me it would look just the same, and he talked me into adding over $600 to add tasks that were not completed.
