Cav & Co. - Corn Fritters with a side of egg!

Having flown in from Wellington, New Zealand...and its hipster coffee joints, I was looking forward…read moreto finding a place which served great coffee. My friend picked me up from my hotel and we drove out to Birkenhead Point where she bought a bag and we headed to Cav & Co. From first appearances, it looked like a great spot and it was awash with patrons sampling what appeared to be sumptuous burgers and chips. First things first, I ordered a triple shot flat white. Large. What a treat. The blend was quite well roasted for a full bodied blend with a slight bitterness. Loved it. I saw another patron eating a veggie delight salad. So I ordered it. Wow! The aubergine was cooked to perfection. There was the perfect amount of feta in the salad as well. Absolutely loved it. As a regular consumer of meat, this was a very well made salad which really hit the spot. The ambience in the cafe was a relaxed vibe all about great food and great company. Lots of people, lots of conversations. But it wasn't overly loud either. And every time another dish was being delivered I another patron, I had to stop myself from ordering the same. If you love food, you'll love Cav & Co. In the end, we arrived at Cav on a recommendation. Bloody marvellous and well worth the drive.

You shouldn't have to be banned at the bar if you are 'only' getting coffee or an expensive smoothie. If you want tap water be prepared to ask numerous times but sadly that seems to be the norm in cafes now. If it's free, it's not important...sigh

With Mr Hangrypants distracted by a sneaker store down the way, I lined up alone to get a table as there was a bit of a queue. "Table for two?" I was asked almost immediately. Crikey, she must have seen us coming a mile away. Bill arrived as I was being shown to our table and we were efficiently given menus and then not forgotten about despite the place being jammed. We ordered food and coffee and the drinks arrived almost immediately, again, as I already mentioned, despite the place being jammed. A little while later our food arrived piping hot, again, and I can not be more emphatic about this, DESPITE THE PLACE BEING JAMMED! This sort of efficient service just doesn't happen in suburban Sydney. The coffee at The Missing Piece is great. The food is top quality. We had Big Breakfasts or "The Complete Picture", in keeping with the theme. Standard price at $18. I was thoroughly impressed all round with my experience and will be back. The only downer is that the OJ is really some kind of Orange Fruit Drink and I did come here one time early on in the piece and they served my tea with milk in a syringe on the side. I hope they have stopped that off putting little nod to modern cafe hipsterism. Other than that, all good in the hood (if North Ryde could indeed be described as a hood...)

Burnt Orange Chatswood - Eggs Benedict on toasted brioche with Alaskan King Crab

Burnt Orange is a great way to start your day. Located within Chatswood Chase, it's a little cafe…read moregreat for getting away from the hustle and bustle that is Chatswood. The table is set simply with fake flowers and fake vines overhang above giving the atmosphere of a garden escape. I myself had the buckwheat pancakes, which came out presented lovely. They were soft and fluffy and full of flavour, with fresh fruit, a fresh cranberry ricotta and maple syrup on the side. I had a coffee also, which was smooth, creamy and had lots of aroma! Very satisfied with my meal. My friend had the King Crab Benedict and thought it was a really innovative and yummy dish. The presentation was gorgeous again and the serving was generous. Eggs were cooked perfectly, hollandaise was really great and the crab was fresh. The only thing that didn't quite go was the brioche bread. She also had the super smoothie which was just as yummy! The staff were friendly, quick and efficient! Great place for a nice and swift breakfast or brunch on a weekend!

Friendly and eager service to start, which was great, but I wish the food had kept up the happy energy. In a nutshell, food is very, very pricey for what it is. I mean I get it, it's to cover the quality of ingredients used, Chatswood location, on top of that - Chatswood CHASE location which is bound to raise the cost of anything. But now knowing what's on offer, I'll be hesitant to pay that fee. To start off with the watermelon juice was $9. We were aware it was just a plain watermelon juice but it came out in an average sized cup, and honestly does not warrant that price. It was just a sign for things to come. I got the salmon nicoise salad which comes with a Jap style potato salad. $24 - not cheap. And not filling either. Yes, the ingredients were fresh and the olives were pretty good even though I usually can't stand olives. But it was the tiniest dish. The salmon was tasty but it too was so small. Potato salad also came with an unpleasant surprise of what looked to be over crispy bacon. Just overall not thrilled with this choice. The teriyaki tofu and chicken burger was quite salty, with teriyaki and mustard? It was a burger which required a lot of concentration to notice anything really, as the teriyaki was so strong and overpowered everything. Accompanying salad was quite lovely though. The menu has hints of Japanese throughout and changes seasonally? Actually not sure but it does update every so often so perhaps better luck next time? For now I'm just lingering on the fact that I left sad and hungry and had to have an early 5pm dinner to compensate.

Dorothy we ain't in Kansas anymore. Heck, we so far north of Texas we is in Australia (da long way…read moreround). The problem with Ribs 'n' Rumps is that Texas exists. And Texas BBQ has infiltrated Australia, in many guises and forms in recent years. Sadly, whilst I would have visited RNR a decade ago and been delighted, these days it just doesn't cut the brisket. Whilst the ribs themselves were cooked well, and had plenty of meat, the flavour was boring, sugary BBQ. No smoke, no depth, nothing to make me eat past the first mouthful really. Plain flavours for unrefined palates. RNR is a little disjointed in this location also. The waitstaff are all trying to serve your table. So, even though you get an individual server who takes your order, every single server that passes your table from the kitchen will ask if the order they are holding is yours... Now, that's just sloppy. The meal is also off-the-charts expensive. When two peeps spend in excess of $150 to have dinner, you kinda don't expect the rookie service + bland flavour 1-2 punch combo. You expect something with some wow factor. An uppercut of intensity, or a surprising haymaker of smoke. No surprises here, just disappointment from a pretender unable to fight its way out of the wet paper bag. Whilst I enjoyed the company (5 stars!) the food and ambience left me wanting. Wanting texas. Wanting smoke. Dreaming of the Salt Lick, hand made lemonade, all you can eat platters of pork ribs, sausage and brisket for $20 and mouth-watering mesquite meat!

Garlic prawns and calamari are also decent for a steak house, but you can never go wrong with a full rack of prom ribs. Oh,, and their desserts are awesome, best banana split and Espresso Brûlée!!
