The Haymarket store is super big with a bar to sit at, a range of smaller tables and also some private rooms that also have karaoke. It is conviently close to central station and also the capitol theatre for those theatre lovers amongst us. We sat in a booth, ideal for the 6 of us in a quiet spot and the waiter served us a few cold Asahi's, perfect to accompany our first course - an array of sushi and sashimi. This was served in a huge sushi boat, which would be suitable for a party so you can try a few things. It was filled with kingfish carpaccio, smoked Toro, and a few types of nigiri sushi - fois gras, scampi, Umi, salmon belly, kingfish as well as a purple soft shell crab roll. Our favourite was the toro (salmon belly). It also had two new dishes, their Umi chirashi waffle ice cream cones, filled with sashimi (salmon or tuna), avocado and topped with konbu cream and a lotus chip. We then got a mix of hot and cold dishes in including Truffle cabbage, mentaiko omelette, grilled cheese scallops, grilled quail, mixed skewers and a wagyu steak platter. The final savoury dish was a soy milk broth hot pot which came with premium wagyu beef and a huge platter full of seafood and dry ice smoking from it for theatrics. We cooked this ourselves and mixed it all together while we waited. Ending on a dessert platter, we enjoyed some ice cream, matcha green tea cake and cheesecake. We were certainly satisfied by the end of this.

What a find this place is and it is conveniently located across the road from central station! We arrived for dinner at 7pm and took up a seat around the train where you can watch the dishes being made before your eyes. All of the sushi items from the train are a work of art, and we recommend ordering the mixed plate which has everything from crystal bay prawn to wagyu beef to sea-eel sushi. These were delicately presented and each had a unique taste that left you wanting more! The sea eel sushi is the owners favourite and once you taste it you will see why. Make sure you order some of the other dishes outside of the sushi and sashimi offerings. The cold soba and salmon bowl and the beef tataki were standouts but if you are a tofu fan do not go past the agedashi tofu. For those that want something a little more adventurous try the steamed egg custard with prawn and soybean - a truly unique dish. The staff are extremely friendly and be sure to chat to the amazing chef as you watch him work his magic to create these delightful dishes. The prices are much cheaper than what you would expect! You will soon add gou sushi to your list of go to places, just like we have!

You will find all the standard dishes on the menu, such as Teriyaki chicken (a little too chewy for my taste), various sushi rolls, sashimi and steamed buns. While everything was satisfactory, some of the seafood didn't taste as fresh as I'd like, and for that reason I probably wont be returning in a hurry. The rest of the lunch menu has decent variety too (except for sushi rolls - these are pretty limited). I definitely recommend the teriyaki salmon steak bento box. For only $15.50 you get a nice sized piece of salmon, 3 pieces of tempura, a small salad, rice, miso soup, and 2 pieces of sushi. Yum!

Well, how pleasantly surprised I was to find it is superb. Started with mixed sashimi, beautifuly presented on a slate, very fresh. The teriyaki salmon bento box was wonderful with so many little delicacies. My John dory with scalaps and a home made tartar sauce was out of this world. There is a small but adequate wine and beer list and sake of course. The service is warm and friendly with a very pleasant ambience. For a Japanese restaurant the price is quite reasonable. We will be back soon.
