I live in Illinois but sustained a serious degloving injury in May 2018 while staying at a hotel on the East Coast. The injury required emergency response of a large trauma team at the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with same day surgery that afternoon. Four days later, the injured area of my leg became seriously infected that required six days of hospitalization, twelve additional outpatient days of antibiotic infusions, and three months of wound care and human cadaver skin grafts. After learning a few weeks after the incident that hotel staff had done nothing to prevent the same kind of accident happening to other unfortunates, I made contact with a lawyer in Chicago to help me find a highly experienced, capable, and no-bullshit kind of personal injury lawyer in Maryland. Two weeks later, he introduced me to Larry Greenberg. I met Larry soon after, told him what happened, and he said that we might have a case but that I needed to fully understand contributory negligence, an unusual law in Maryland that exists to this day in only five other states. I won't make any effort to define the law here. That's Larry's job but it's important that you learn about it and understand the downside risks. In our case, we moved forward even after Larry had said our case could take up to three years from start to finish. The pathway was meandering at the least and sometimes a bit tortuous. But throughout our deliberations, Larry did well in keeping me informed and welcomed my participation in crafting clear and convincing language that ended in an out of court settlement nearly three years later. The settlement amount came in 15% less than what I had thought was fair given all the facts of the case and the things that occurred afterward, but Larry knew and advised that we accept that offer instead of holding out for a jury trial. With Covid shutdown of courts, the trail might not occur for another year or two and it would only require one juror to say no and the settlement amount would be $0.00.
