PreSchool Family is truly the BEST preschool in Palo Alto. When my son was 2 years old, I toured all of the parent participation preschools in the area. My husband and I chose PreSchool Family for several reasons - how engaged and warm the teachers seemed to be with the kids, the large and welcoming outdoor space, and the play-based curriculum that allows children to learn by exploring. We spent 6 wonderful years at PreSchool Family, with both my son and later my daughter going through the 2s, 3s, and 4s classes. In that time, I saw firsthand that my initial impressions were correct, and so much more... - The Teachers: In addition to being warm and engaged with the kids, the teachers are all highly skilled. They have higher education degrees in early childhood education, literacy, and more. Many of the teachers have been there for 10+ years. There is very little turnover - the teachers are there because they LOVE what they do. In addition to planning engaging and age-appropriate activities for the kids, they facilitate play, resolve conflicts, and are completely hands on during the morning classes. The teachers also teach the parents at night meetings (without children present) where instruction is discussion-based and focuses on child development, conflict resolution, healthy habits, etc. - The Space: The outdoor space is large, with plenty of room for the kids to run, ride tricycles, push doll strollers, launch stomp rockets, etc. Since the curriculum is play-based, the kids spend a significant portion of their time outside. There are two play structures in the 2s and 3s yard and one larger play structure in the 4s yard. There's nice shade from trees / shade structures and the teachers are great about helping the kids with weather-appropriate gear as needed. - Play-Based Curriculum: Numerous studies have shown that children do better in elementary school and beyond when they follow a play-based curriculum in preschool. Although there are no worksheets at PreSchool Family, the children are definitely learning! Many classes have a "manipulatives" table where the kids work on fine motor skills, an "art" table where art projects are done, and a "sensory" table where the kids explore their tactile senses with playdough, slime, etc. There are baking projects, music time, theatrical performances, treasure hunts, interactive space stations made of cardboard boxes, and so so much more. My children came home each day so excited by the activities they had done in school. - Parent Community: Because this is a parent-participation preschool, the parents really get to know each other. They work in the classroom one day each week and see each other at the night meetings approximately twice a month. The parent education meetings help to shape a common parenting philosophy among the adults, which builds trust and respect among all who are interacting with your children. Plus, the bonds you build are long-lasting. My children are now much older, but some of my best friends are other parents our time at PreSchool Family. I could go on and on, but I will leave it at that for now. If you're considering a parent-participation preschool, I HIGHLY recommend PreSchool Family. Your child will have the best possible experience while learning and growing, you will learn and grow so much in your parenting journey, and you will form friendships that will last so much longer than just the preschool years. This school has truly been a life-changing experience for me. I can't even quantify how much this school improved my parenting skills, relationship with my son, and confidence in parenting. The parent education classes are a wonderful way to meet other parents, talk about burning issues, realize that we are not alone in our parenting journeys (and struggles), connect with other parents and develop wonderful long-lasting friendships, and join this amazing community of like-minded adults that nurtures the whole family. At first, I was intimidated by the thought of the parent participation commitment of volunteering in the class each week because both my husband and I work full time. However, after discussing my desire to be very involved in my son's development, my management supported this, and we worked out a way to make it happen with my work schedule. I am so glad that I did. I never imagined how much I would absolutely love being in the classroom each week! It was such a joy to get to know all of my son's friends, and ultimately their families. But most importantly, it was the key to practicing and sharpening my skills to be a better parent that I learned in the parent education classes. PSF has large outdoor areas for the kids to play and run. The curriculum is structured for play-based learning, and the teachers are very knowledgeable about childhood development. The parent education classes teach parents/guardians about developmental milestones, behaviors typical to each age group, and strategies for developing a very strong bond with your child. With parent participation at PSF, I found there were two very important parts that makes it so successful. First was attending the parent education classes to learn about child development, the skills to be a better parent, and to connect with other parents. Second was to volunteer weekly to put those skills into practice in the classroom and shadow the teachers that have developed these skills over decades. I learned so much at PSF, and I can truly say that it has changed my life. I feel much more confident as a parent, and I feel that I now have a toolbox of skills to help me be a much better parent. I highly recommend PSF if you are looking to be involved in your child's development, want to be a better parent, or are looking for a wonderful community of support to help you on your parenting journey. I really appreciated Preschool family and feel so lucky to be able to find this program. The staffs are very knowledgeable on kid's development and really know how to design and provide age-appropriate activities for kids. And they are very experienced as well. Both in my 2's and 3's classroom, when I didn't understand or didnt know how to deal with certain behaviors of my kid, the teachers knew what happened on the kid developmentally and provided advice and strategies accordingly. My daughter was fortune to attend PSF from 2's -4's. I took some childhood education classes back at collage and learned how these early years will shape the children social emotionally and attitudes of learning in the future. Thus I was determined to spend quality time for my children for the first few years. PSF is a parent participation program which made my dream into being and even better than what I was hoping for. This program not only shaping my daughter with a good quality foundation but also reconstructed myself to be a better parent. Being able to go through the preschool years in PSF with my daughter is the most rewarding part for me being a parent. You have a strong community built with experienced and caring teachers, friendly and supportive families to support you to be the parents you want to be. Development appropriate is always the key to help kids to learn. My daughter was introduced to various fun activities daily (pretend play, art making, cooking, sports, science, sensory, booking reading, cultural holidays...) through play which makes her looking forward to going to school every day. She was shy and couldn't speak English at all when she first attended the school. By the time she graduates, she became more confident in herself, knows how to express her feelings, open to learning new things, master skills requires efforts and keep trying, how to show respect, care and kindness, how to work together with friend, most important of all she knows it's ok if she makes a mistake, people will always be there for her. I saw the transformation working on her through all the kindness, love and positive group learning experiences given from PSF community to her. Now she is a 2nd grader, since kindergarten until now, all the teachers and friends commented my daughter with the good quality of being a friend and a student (kind, play nicely with friends, inclusive, problem solver, empathy, positive learning attitudes, keep trying). I always give the credit for PSF teachers who model these to her and shape her to be who she is now. I also learn to be a better parent who I want to be by attending the parent classes and working in the classroom. There are so much things you can gain from this school together with your children (love, knowledge and skills to support your child grow, positive learning experiences, cherishing friendships) that will stay with your family the rest of the years. We've been a part of Preschool Family for the past 4+ years, starting with the infant program, continuing through the pandemic via zoom classes, dinner classes, 3s, and now the 4s class and have been very satisfied throughout and would highly recommend all the offerings. As first time parents, we continue to find the parent ed classes critical in keeping up with and supporting the different phases of our child's development, regulation, behavior, and temperament. We also really enjoyed and benefited from connecting with and learning from other parents, kids, and families to be better parents ourselves, and also more supportive members of the broader parenting and early childhood education community. Aside from parent ed classes, the daytime classes are also a great opportunity to observe, practice, and continue learning and growing (while spending invaluable class time with your kid!). In addition to the parent ed and daytime classes, there are also community events including guest speakers (including top authors and thought leaders on early childhood education and development), dance and other classes, book clubs, fun days (reuniting also with PSF alumni), and much more - organized and led by the amazing teacher and broader community. In summary, we believe PSF to be a true gem - a diverse, welcoming community of committed, passionate, supportive, and experienced teachers, parents, administrators, and of course wonderful kids. Preschool Family is unique and outstanding among the preschool programs in the area. It is parent participation so you get to be in the classroom with your child watching them grow, but most importantly, it is parent education which means that you get to learn all about the stage that your child is in to equip yourself to be a parent! I feel beyond lucky to have found PreSchool Family (PSF) for our daughter, myself and our family. I had no idea what a huge impact preschool could or would have on our family, but PreSchool Family has left its mark on our hearts and our lives already. The focus on the child is evident in every part of the day as children are encouraged to play, explore and be themselves. Amazingly, while teachers are focused on the children, they are simultaneously supporting the caregivers-teaching us about child development, parenting tools and strategies, and giving us a platform to ask questions, share insights, cry, and celebrate through parent work days and afterschool parent ed classes. My twins and I have been in the program for two years now. This preschool has been amazing and I would recommend it to other parents who have the time and ability to participate in preschool with their children. Yes, this is a parent participation preschool and in fact, it's the parent that is actually enrolled in the program. This preschool looks to help not on the child to grow and socialize and mature, but also hopes for parents to learn more about their children and more about themselves as a parent. As a father of twins, the school's teachers, administration, and fellow parents have been welcoming and encouraging. Some places can feel uncomfortable as a stay at home father, but not PreSchool Family. The environment encourages fathers to be involved. And in terms of having twins, I've never felt like I was treated as burden just because I was bringing two children into program. I started with the program in the 12-18 month class, and from speaking with parents who started earlier, even with the 0-6 month class, I wish I had started earlier. Friendships and bonds were formed and much information was shared that probably would have been useful during those stressful early months. Nonetheless, even though we started later than others, both years we've been in program have been a great time of learning and growth for me and my children. And the three of us have made some great friends and memories through the school. I look forward to continuing the program next year and the year after, when we'll have to say goodbye and move on to kindergarten. Finally, the cost of this program cannot be beat. I would *strongly* recommend PreSchool Family for any family interested in attending a pre-school with parental involvement/participation. Parents participate in their child's class once a week, so they get a much better sense of their child's daily activities, environment, and teachers. Plus, the school even offers night (or day) classes for the parents (roughly twice a month). The night classes were actually (surprisingly) one of the strongest aspects of this school, as they focused a lot on helping the parents to better understand the developmental stages and challenges of raising their kids as they enter pre-school, and this also helped to foster a strong sense of community among the participating parents. The teachers and staff are hands down some of the most sincere, caring, trustworthy, and kind people we have ever met, and the school community as a whole is fantastic: everyone comes together for the betterment of these children. While this level of involvement may seem like more responsibility than many other pre-school requirements, it turned out to be the most-surprising and rewarding aspect of this experience, as it provides a stronger overall sense of community and trust between the participating parents and teachers than I think we would have received anywhere else. We had our oldest daughter in another preschool before finally trying this one out. The difference was night and day (both for her and for us, as parents). We now have our two oldest daughters in PreSchool Family and plan for our youngest daughter to start there soon as well. read more

This is a wonderful community we happened to discover by chance and are not regretting a bit of it. We had our 4year old enrolled in this play based preschool program and were enthralled with it! She enjoyed it thoroughly and has shown a great deal of improvement with her communication and social skills. It is a play based program/Preschool which has programs right from newborn to 4year olds. We started at PSF when my twins weren't even old enough to walk, and we stayed as long as we could! As an ECE person myself, the philosophy of the school was really important, and PSF delivers on all counts. Play-based, developmentally appropriate, AND they do a great job of introducing their 4-year-olds to what will come in "5-year-old school." Add in the parent-ed component along with the community building piece (my kids are 9 now, and we still regularly see families from PSF) and it's as close to a perfect introduction to school as I had hoped to find for my little ones. read more

They have classes for every age, from basically birth to young fives. I have learned so much through the parent education classes. Being able to talk to other parents and a teacher with questions regarding child development, sleep issues, general questions has made such an enormous difference in my parenting. I started with the newborn class with both children, and it's been such a great way to start a wonderful community. It has been such a pleasure to see my children in a play-based environment develop from immobile, just looking at me, to walking and running around playing with others. We love Preschool Family for so many reasons. It has given my children the well-rounded, play-based preschool experience that I wanted for them. My older child, who is now in elementary school, was 100% ready for kindergarten when he left the program. My younger child adores his class. Every teacher we've had at Preschool Family, from the infant class to the 4s class, has been kind, nurturing and communicative. I love being in the classroom once a week to see my child interact with his peers. And from a financial perspective, it's a bargain. But what really sets it apart is the sense of community it provides. My daughter studied/played in Preschool family for 4 years since she was 18 months. It's a play-based preschool with excellent teachers, good program and huge playground. Most of the teachers are amazingly great, they teach because they love kids, not because of the money. Some of the teachers were even alumni parents who went thru this preschool with their kids before. They love this program so much that they studied the credentials and became a teacher themselves. This is a co-op program for parents to work one morning in class, I really enjoyed it myself. I could observe how my daughter interacted with other kids and the daily activities. When our child was born, my wife had the foresight to look for a preschool for us. The idea never entered my mind, as I was so preoccupied with the day-to-day of parenting. Looking back at what I know now as to how little I knew then, I feel so grateful to my wife for enrolling us. The school's philosophy encourages exploration and experience through play. The teachers don't teach but rather facilitate. They present information that allows the parent to develop their own perspective or philosophy. They help parents to define what values are important in their own families. Having a community like Preschool Family has enriched our lives and allowed us to feel rooted in the area. I appreciated the discussions with other parents and sharing in our victories and learning from mistakes. Understand that this is a parent participation preschool. Our family has been at PreSchool Famiy for 6 years now. We have had the most magical preschool experience for my son (just started Kinder) and my daughter (almost 3). PreSchool Family is a parent participation preschool so you really get to know all of the kids, siblings, and parents. After a couple years it becomes that place where everyone knows your name. We have no family in California but the families we've met through the program have become more like family than friends. The other parents know my kids better than most of our very closest friends because they are in the classroom with them when I'm there and when I'm not. My kids feel so comfortable at school. They've been in class with many of the kids since they were infants. Both of my kids started in the 6-12 month old class, which is just one morning a week for 2 hours and the parents are all there. Drop-offs start in the 2s class -- it's 2 mornings a week and one parent from each family stays 1 of the mornings. In the 3s class, it's 3 mornings a week and 1 parent from each family stays 1 morning. Then in the 4s, it's 4 mornings a week and 1 parent from each family stays 1 morning. The kids gradually get used to more drop-off days and they know the other parents so well that it's extremely easy for them to separate because they already know everyone and have probably even been to their houses. I found that this was fantastic for my son who was very shy. I think the program prepared him so well for kindergarten. Also I should mention that the teachers are so wonderful. Most of them were parents in the program. They are all 100% invested in the school and the kids. Another component of PreSchool Family that makes it very unique is the adult education component. Each class, except for the 0-6 month old class has 2 night meetings per month. At those meetings parents learn about child development and have a forum to discuss burning issues and gain insights from other parents and teachers. It's also a time you really get to know the other parents. So yes, you've probably noticed that this is a school that you would spend a lot of time at as a parent. It's definitely not ideal for a family that really needs only drop-off and no extra time commitments but I'm telling you, it's worth it. It builds a beautiful community for your family. There are so many cool things that we have experienced, like when my daughter was born, every family in my son's class took turns bringing us dinner or the impromptu potlucks and movie nights and even the moms weekend away I've had the last 2 years and the family weekend in Costanoa with a ton of kids from my son's class. None of that was organized by the teachers, it was just the parents putting things together because they want to spend time together or help out when a family is having a hard time. read more

We started going to PSF when my oldest daughter was 10 months old. I couldn't believe the amount of support I got as a new parent at PSF. Through the years, all of my parenting questions have been answered in a non-judgmental, caring way, from temper-tantrums to sleep issues to potty training to getting ready for kindergarten. I've been known to tell friends (and even strangers) that PreSchool Family is by far the best thing I have done for myself and my children since becoming a parent. I have been at PSF for almost five years, since my son was two months old, and have since enrolled my daughter in the program as well. PreSchool Family is not only a school for young infants, toddlers and children - it is a school for parents. Parents work in the classrooms, and attend night classes with their parenting peers. In these night meetings, we learn how to take care of our children and ourselves through the sometimes messy, sometimes wonderful world of parenting. People used to ask me why my newborn was "going to preschool," but the newborn classes are designed to help new parents find support and build community. Newborn and toddler classes can be a lifeline throughout the first few months (or years) of sleepless nights. PSF is a place where you can find parents who have the same questions about parenting, the same concerns, and the same joys we share as parents. Many of the teachers at PSF are also alumni parents who have been associated with the school as teachers and/or parents for years. They truly care about the children and the parents, and make themselves available to you when you need them. The true gem of PreSchool Family is its amazing community - including its families, teachers and administrators. Watching your child grow to know and trust other adults, and being able to entrust other adults with your own children is wonderful in so many ways. They are able to have a richer experience learning from other parents and being able to navigate social situations with their peers. After five years, my son knows how to diffuse conflicts on the playground without becoming afraid or upset. He is teaching his sister the skills he has learned at school, and it is amazing to watch. We have made lifelong friends over the years, and we look forward to continuing these friendships even after the kids move on to Kindergarten. One last thing to note is that PreSchool Family is truly understanding of the needs of the community, and has adapted over the years to meet those needs. They offer inclusion classes for children with special needs, which is another fantastic way that all of our children can learn from each other. Just this year, PSF began offering a class designed for working parents, who may not be able to attend day classes during the workday. These classes are offered weekly in the late-afternoons, allowing working parents to interact with their children and other parents and children, and still benefit from the parenting classes offered at PSF. I didn't know what "community" meant until my daughter started at Preschool Family. I watched her blossom socially, emotionally and academically and we both made friendships that I believe will last a lifetime. You do have to invest your time to make it work. But you get a million times back what you put in. Our daughter completed the program in 2010 and is now flourishing in 1st grade. Our son is now starting the 3's class. Both our children have a positive attitude about school-- they say "We love school!" and can't wait to get there. We owe that all to PSF. PreSchool Family is a wonderful play-based preschool for children starting from BIRTH to kindergarten. YOu can begin anytime, but more difficult to get a spot once children are 3. BEcause PSF is considered adult education as well as a wonderful start to your child's education, parents can be part of their child's classroom experience one day per week. It's a great way to learn more about your own child and their friends. You have the opportunity to have all of your parenting questions answered or share experiences with parents dealing with similar issues. I can't say enough great things about this preschool! We have watched our children flourish in this nurturing, play-based environment. They love going to school! We are pleased to know that our son, who just graduated, is very well-prepared for kindergarten, both didactically and socially. Because of PSF, our family is stronger, better-connected, more grounded in our values and better able to solve the problems of everyday life. PreSchool Family is a play-based program and from my own education in Child Development, I knew this would be the right path for our children. We have a daughter entering 4th grade, a son entering kindergarten and another son entering the Twos class at PSF next year. Each child has had a wonderful experience in preschool. One of the greatest skills each of my children has mastered during their time at PSF has been social problem solving. They are not only prepared for academic success in elementary school, but social success, which I feel is equally important. We experienced some very rough times managing three-year-old behavior, and I feel eternally grateful to have had the caring support of teachers, staff and parents at PreSchool Family through it all. We chose to be a part of PreSchool Family because of the caring and supportive community it provided. With PSF, one doesn't have to parent in isolation! It is a place to connect with other families and learn about best practices in parenting, child development and useful strategies for navigating through life as a parent. I agree with the other 5-start reviews. This is a great school that was a great fit for us but may not be for others. 2-year-olds attend 2 mornings a week, 3-year-olds attend 3 mornings per week, and 4 year olds attend 4 mornings per week. And each year a parent attends 1 of those mornings as a "work parent", in charge of bringing snack or facilitating the art project, etc. It's great to see what goes on in the class, observe and interact with your own children, and get to know and play with other kids. It's also great to attend the every-other-week night meeting with the teacher and parents and learn about parenting. But full-time working parents without evening availability... The program is not for you. read more

After attending as a child with my mother and now participating with my own children (4.5 and 2.5) as a parent, you won't find a better preschool community in the area. The families are warm and welcoming, the staff are excellent, and the school is conveniently located for families in Mountain View/Los Altos, Palo Alto, Menlo Park and even Redwood City. Not only do I love getting to play with my children with age-appropriate invitations (think play-doh, sand, water play, paint and glue you don't have to clean up at home) I'm not sure what I would have done without the parent education component and support and guidance for other parents and of course the expertise of the teachers. I've participated in the infant class, 6-12 month class, 18-30 class, and this year the 2's and 4's class. Each year we keep coming back. I have been through Preschool Family with both my children and we have found it immensely rewarding. It is adult education, so the parent is the one enrolled, but it operates basically like a co-op. It is a parent participation preschool program that teaches you much more than child rearing basics. It is the first place I really felt I belonged to a community that is super supportive and caring. The staff is awesome, not only because they have lots of experience and have a myriad of tricks in their hats, but because they really love being there. Their vocation shows in the way they teach not only the children, but the parents alike. I really love the way the kids learn to socialize with their peers. They learn social skills that will serve them all their lives, as well as regular academic skills in preparation for school. You and your child will grow and thrive. I consider it an ideal place to raise your children, where you get to enjoy their childhood with them. It is for people who are willing to mindfully engage in their children's lives. read more
