I say old and…read moreyoung for a good reason: in my experience a lovely old couple or a mother with her child usually frequents this nursery and café. Everyone can appreciate beautiful plants and flowers, and everyone likes having a hot chocolate. While Kew Nursery may not have as broad a range of plants as other gardening centres like Bulleen Art and Garden, it does have really great vegetable section and some beautiful native shrubs and small trees. The staff are all really helpful but sometimes it can be hard to pin one down when its busy, that's the only problem I've had. I really like coming here because not only do I get to exhaust myself walking around and discovering some new species I previously hadn't seen, but I then get to head off into the café and enjoy a coffee and serve of eggs benedict ($13). Heaven.

One of the things that makes Plants on High so lovely are the people who work there, every time I…read morehave been I am always really pleased with the service. Friendly, honest and surprisingly ethereal, they love the plants and what they do, and being in that sort of atmosphere is contagious. You would never guess that this nursery is on a busy street because when you walk in a sense of quiet and calm is apparent. I personally love walking around the aisles and looking at the bright colours of little cottage flowers like marigolds and petunias, and then looking at the exquisite orchids around the counter. There is something nice about a place that doesn't try to do too much. Plants on High isn't complicated: it is just about the flowers and the plants. It doesn't have a café because it doesn't need to, it doesn't have an enormous landscaping section because it doesn't need one. This local nursery may only be small, but it really is beautiful and the staff are exceptional.

A visit to the Bulleen Art and Garden Nursery is always fun…read more Comprising a nursery, gallery and stockyard for landscape design materials, there is always a lot to see and do. The nursery includes large water plant, native, indoor, veggie, herb, and cottage garden collections. Its easy to lose yourself walking along the rows of flowers, but the sections are clearly labeled and if you have any difficulty there's a little hut near the entry way where you can ask for help. Bulleen Art and Gardens is also very child friendly. There is a chook pen in the corner surrounded by fruit trees that is very pleasant, and little workstations with information about recycling and different plants. The staff are very friendly and always forthcoming with great advice and botanical knowledge, although you may have trouble finding someone to help when it's really busy. Make sure you check out the gallery space on your way out. The beautiful mosaics and funky sculptures are well worth seeing.

I've been to BAAG a few times and always forget that the place is a real disappointment. Poor…read moreservice, to the point where the staff either ignore you, or when you ask for help, make you feel just a little but stupid, because you aren't a horticultural expert. Plants always seem to be in a bad condition, with root systems that look like they've been in pots for ages. And, when I tried to pay for the plants that I wanted to buy (about $100 worth), me and the three other customers in line waited about five minutes with no explanation from the three staff behind the counter as to why they couldn't help us (I was there around 2pm during the week, so they weren't super busy). So, the general vibe is disappointing. And I guess if they say that their style is an acquired taste, then it's not to mine. So, Yelpers, next time I think about buying stuff from this place, remind me not to.
