Strangely, after arrival from Glasgow trains leave platform 1 then reverse over to platform 2 for departure - I presume passengers are supposed to board from the latter but this is not made very clear. There is a very modern building which doubles as a ticket office and waiting room, with an eqaully modern and clean toilet - something much more ScotRail stations should have. The facilities here and the half-hourly service is definitely adequate for the amount of passengers using the station.

Scotstounhill station lies just off a side street from Danes Drive, making it only a short walk…read morefrom Scotstoun Leisure Centre. It lies on the Argyle and North Clyde lines, meaning one can travel on SPT services to Balloch, Clydebank and Helensburgh to the west, Glasgow city centre and Airdrie to the east, and Motherwell and Lanark to the south. I found that to get back to the city centre from this station there wasn't even much point planning out your journey with a timetable, such is the frequency of the trains. There is a train nearly every 10 minutes, with roughly every second one to Queen Street and the others to Central. So like Partick station, your best bet is to just turn up at the station and get the next train you see. The station is very quiet most of the time, though probably a good but busier during the rush hours. It is also handy that if you are getting a train back to the city centre if you look down the line towards Clydebank, you can actually see oncoming trains stopping at Garscadden station a very short length away, so you get plenty of warning of your train arriving. But beware, it is not an island platform here so if you're running late for the train you may have to hot foot it over the footbridge before it leaves!

From here trains go on to Cumbernauld, Dalmuir, Dumbarton and Motherwell. It's quite a nice station, with covered waiting areas and a bridge that connects the two platforms. There's a staffed ticket office as well as self service ticket machines but no barriers. There are bike racks available and you can pick up Scotrail's free WiFi here. There's no shop or anything within the station, but there's a small post office nearby. There's nothing much special going on here but as a small commuter station it's A-Ok.

Lenzie Station is a pretty small station - it only has two platforms. It does have a staffed ticket…read morewindow and a waiting room though. Although it can be difficult to park in the surrounding streets, the station does have its own car park. Disturbingly though, at regular intervals thoughout the day (every five minutes?) a disembodied recorded voice will tell you not to park in the disabled bays unless you hold a valid permit. A little too bizarre if you ask me! Lenzie station has good services to both Glasgow and Edinburgh. The Glasgow service will get you into Queen Street in around 20 minutes. The Edinburgh service (which does require one change) takes about 45 minutes. Both trains are at regular points throughout the day, and are inexpensive.

Lenzie is not a bad at all. Cleaner and brighter than most train stations you find on - for example…read more- low-level routes, it's a good wee commuter train station. It has all the usual amenities, including good signage and a staffed ticket window. They even have benches and an indoor waiting area -- score! It's not too far from Kirkintilloch, and has good routes into Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling and Falkirk (and all the stops in-between). It's about 20 minutes or so from both Glasgow and Stirling, which is super handy if you're commuting to either city or university. It's also a park-and-ride station, with a decent sized car park. This may be odd to comment on, but it's also just the right shape for cars to circle and pick you up. Genius!

Shettleston Railway Station is part of the Scotrail network. It's located on Balgair Terrace near…read morethe Tesco Extra supermarket. Shettleston is on the North East Route, connecting Drumgelloch on the east to Helensburgh Central and Balloch to the west. It takes approximately 10 minutes to get into the city centre from here, where it stops at High Street, Glasgow Queen Street, and Charing cross. It is once stop west of Garrowhill station and fares are a little cheaper than from there. It's just under £2.50 for a return from Shettleston to Queen Street. The station is at ground level, though it's on a low-level line. It has a manned ticket booth and a small vestibule where you can sit indoors and wait for the train. Commuter trains are frequent, arriving every 15 minutes in both directions between about 7am and 7pm, and every 30 minutes on Sundays and evenings. Not the most exciting of train stations, but it does the job!

Apparently a fortune teller said she would tell her her fate if she "crossed her loof" (which means hand) with some silver. No fortune tellers to be seen on any of my visits here though and certainly no people wanting to cross my loof with some silver. This station is the first stop on the East Kilbride line from Glasgow Central Station. Alight here if you are looking to get to the Shawlands area or if you want to do some shopping at Morrisons which is right next to this station.

The Exhibition Centre station is probably a tiny bit too small to do the job it's supposed to. It's…read morea two platform station and is the closest one to the SECC and Hydro, so people either change at Partick or Central to get to the Exhibition Centre for events. The result is that most of the time the station is pretty quiet but every now and then it's absolutely mobbed. I have no idea what the solution to this is. However, it is also quite a handy station if you're in the Finnieston area. Finnieston is more or less in the centre of the subway loop and isn't the best for buses either, so if you're wanting to get between Finnieston and the city centre, you're far better catching the train (it's often cheaper than the subway too). The staff here are particularly great (shout out to the guy with the glasses who sells tickets and who is brilliant) and there's a fair bit of space indoors between the two platforms where you can keep out of the rain. There are also benches on the platforms themselves and there's free WiFi and ticket machines. There are quite a lot of steps to get down to the platform from street level, but there is a lift too. It's just worth planning ahead if you need to use the lift when the station is likely to be busy.

I used to find such events unbelievably exciting at aged 6, though nowadays I really couldn't be bothered traipsing round the halls looking at cheap Korean cars or a cardboard mock up of a flatpack Wimpy home. Anyway, perhaps the most exciting thing was the massive red tunnel that leads from this station to the SECC, it doesn't feel as space age as it did then, but it still brings back the memories.

There's a staffed ticket office but there are machines to buy tickets from as well. The station also has bike racks, a small car park, a coffee kiosk, waiting rooms and free WiFi via the Cloud. You can reach Milngavie centre via an underpass just outside the station. Also right outside the station is a small but pretty little square with a couple of benches - possibly a nicer place to sit in sunny weather. It's a well kept station with baskets of flowers and plants around and is apparently a grade B listed building.

One of the slicker stations offered on the local line, Milngavie is well maintained and relatively…read moreaesthetically pleasing. Unsurprising, I guess, given the affluence of the area. With an elaborately decorated underpass leading into the town centre, it's a nice way to welcome the abudance of visitors the town gets who are preparing to start the West Highland Way. Indeed, it gets an extra star for the provision of bike lockers, which is obviously particularly handy in this location.

Garrowhill station is a small but perfectly formed station of two platforms that connects the…read moreGarrowhill area with the centre of Glasgow via Queen Street Station. There's not a lot here, apart from some seats and waiting areas and a ticket office. It's surrounded by the Garrowhill area which is a fairly quiet and green piece of suburbia. There's not much around besides housing, schools and churches, so as pretty as this station is, there's no strong reason to visit it unless, perhaps, you're seeing friends who live in the area.

Garrowhill train station can be approached either from Barrachnie Road on the Barlanark side, or…read morethrough the residential streets of Garrowhill. It's a very small low-level station, with Eastbound links to Airdrie and Drumgelloch, and Westbound links to Helensburgh and Balloch. Trains in each direction are frequent, roughly every 15 minutes between 7am and 7pm, and every half-hour until about midnight on weekdays. The Westbound trains from here will get you into High Street in 10 minutes, Queen Street in 12 minutes, and Charing Cross in 15 minutes. It's perfect for getting into town. There are 2 platforms, with a ramp down to Platform 1 and a ramp up to Platform 2. There is also a staffed ticket booth, which is open between 6am and 7pm on weekdays, and closed on Sundays. The staff here are really friendly and helpful. It is a little bit weathered and dingy at the best of times, but it's a good location and gets you into the city centre 3 times faster than a bus (and for about the same price), which is well worth it!
