This lovely big area of parkland adjacent to Larkfield Road in Gourock used to be called 'Darroch…read morePark', but was renamed by the council some years ago. The lower slopes are great for walking amongst the trees and neat flower beds. The park staff seem to keep everything looking lovely and I enjoyed a stroll there a week or two ago. The Gourock Burn flows down the west side of the park and there is a 'Swan Pond' as well. Further up, there's a bowling green and tennis courts. There are marvellous views to be had across the Clyde from the top!

There is also a pavilion with toilet facilities and a cafeteria. A popular place for strolling to admire the views. There are also various events staged here from time to time, like firework displays. It's very close to the Fort Matilda railway station, too, though you can scarcely see it from the park.

It's just off the A770 and easy to find. Part of the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park and looked after by their staff. You can follow the coastal path from here to Inverkip which is a nice walk.

My goodness, this small pier could do with a good spruce-up, if not a total renovation (see my…read morephotos)!! It's in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable and a peaceful place to stand and admire the breathtaking views. This is where the north shore of the Holy Loch becomes the west shore of the Firth of Clyde and it's one of my favourite places. The pier (built in 1847) has lain derelict now for many years, although it was once a regular stopping place for the Clyde steamers. You can park on the roadside near the pier and there are also local buses from Dunoon which visit Strone.

I really enjoyed a trip to this park and it's well worth a visit. The entrance, through the…read moreimpressive gates, is on Regent Street and you can park on that road for no charge. The white war memorial is very striking and the first thing you see as you go through the gates. The old well which gave the park its name, was placed there by by the local laird John Shaw. There is a faded inscription, '1629', with his initials and those of his wife (Helen Housten). It was the original well for the residence of the Shaw family who were very influential on the development of the town; their mansion house was at the bottom of Lynedoch Street but demolished in 1886 owing to railway tunnelling. The Victoria Tower can easily be seen from the park, part of the impressive Town Hall (which was built in 1886 at a cost of over £100,000) and which must surely be one of the finest municipal buildings in Scotland. There are plenty of places to sit, and there are fine views over the town and beyond to the Clyde and the mountains of Argyll in the distance. There's a small children's play area too and some attractive flower beds and mature trees.

Cardwell Bay provided a safe mooring for the flying boats during World War 2 but now gives a safe…read moreanchorage to visiting boats. Although there were plans to redevelop the whole area recently - with hotels, shops and the like; even a canal with lock gates (!) - I for one am so glad this didn't go ahead. It's a lovely spot just as it is and a perfect place to take a quiet stroll. Imagine how noisy it would have become for local residents and walkers, during the building and ever afterwards too! There's a children's play area at one end of the promenade and lots of benches with delightful views looking out over the water and to the nearby Battery Park across the bay. I spent many happy hours here as a small child, mostly down on the beach, and it was wonderful to visit again recently and take photos.

There was a time, only up until a few years ago, that every Saturday morning started with my…read moreheading to the Battery Park for 9am training. We would be there rain, hail or shine and bask in the sun, or the mud! The Battery is one of Greenock's best assets. Prime land right on the front by the water is home to the park. The running track round the park is nearly 2miles long and the grass itself is well kept and maintained. There is also a full sized astrotruff pitch which is floodlit - when I was young it was my dream to play under floodlights! It can now come true for the boys in the area! Head down to the Battery on a sunny day and simply enjoy the weather. There is one huge playpark and another smaller one covered with sand and huge climbing frames. A seriously amazing place to hang out if your under 10, but its for every big kid really! Not many good days go by where we weren't hanging out at the park in the summer and the place it huge. Definitely recommend for a run or a strol, a kick about or a place to walk your dog - enjoy it at your leisure.

Well it's easy for me to give this loch 5 stars because it is one of my very favourite places to…read morevisit! I've walked the paths and roads around here over many years and I learnt to drive on some of them too. This is the largest of a group of reservoirs in this area and named after the engineer Robert Thom (1774 - 1847). He designed the scheme to create this reservoir which has provided Greenock with water since 1827. A wonderful place to take a walk - you won't meet many people either. These spectacular Italianate buildings (splendid both inside and out) were finished in 1886 and the…read morebeautiful Victoria Tower (75m in height) can be seen dominating the skyline from many parts of the town. Unfortunately, the Municipal Buildings remain uncompleted to this day as a local man, Robert Cowan, refused to sell his business in front of the tower. As a result, the shop was inserted into one corner but was destroyed during a bombing raid in 1941, leaving the unusual effect still seen today. The bricks are different to the rest and this area has become known as 'Cowan's Corner'. These days the Municipal Buildings include the Town Hall and various Council offices. There are a few parking spaces nearby but it's very difficult to find a space. However, there is a large public car park only about 5 minutes walk away.
