Ilana's leadership, the excellent teachers, and the sense of camaraderie throughout the school created a happy, fun place for our kids to grow and learn. There is a very pleasant balance of structured, unstructured, outdoor, and rest time each day. Over 5 years, I've seen Ilana gracefully handle many tricky situations and I think she and the teachers generally do it just right. Lolly's has four classrooms, a 2's room, a little 3's, an older 3's, and a Universal Pre-K classroom, as well as a gym. The kids regularly visit neighborhood play areas when it's warm, and healthy lunches are provided. Lolly's seems to have somewhat more flexibility around day length and number of days than other schools in the area. Lolly's runs 12 four-week months during the year, and takes four week-long breaks, usually spring break, 4th of July, last week in August, and around the holidays. It's good to schedule vacations and grandparent visits around these times. Like many schools, Lolly's is a lot easier to get into in June and September (since that's generally when the UPK students leave and all the littler kids move up). During the first few weeks, the staff provided helpful feedback and guidance on how to help our child adjust. The teachers also use an app to provide updates on your child's day which includes logs of food intake, potty and pictures/videos of their daily activities. The number of photos can vary depending on how busy they are but usually there's at least one per day. Activities include painting, puzzles, circle time with singing, amongst others. I have been impressed with how creative the activities are. The class size seems to be between 8-12 on a given day, with about 3 classes and about two teachers per class. Morning and afternoon snack are included in tuition, and parents provide lunch. There is an infant rate and toddler rate (after two years old), with the toddler rate being less expensive. The administrative team is very responsive, especially Jack, who has even responded to us even after business hours. Tuition payments are on a monthly basis via the app. I do wish there was some sort of orientation process for newcomers (caveat: we joined mid year during the pandemic so not a typical year). Also, wish that the class schedule was shared on the app so I know what the children were up to each week. But compared to these more minor things - my child seems happy, healthy and is developing new skills which is most important. My maternity leave ended a couple months ago, and after writing this review I'm declaring success. Yes, new mamas, it is possible to write up to 10 paragraphs after having a baby, as long as you're realistic and give yourself several months to accomplish the task!! I toured Little Ones, both the original facility on 48th Avenue and the new-in-2013 Pre-K facility on 5th Street, during my maternity leave, and I was impressed. Both facilities are outstanding. I spoke with three teachers and the owner, Karen, over the course of my tour, and all impressed me as being accomplished educators and good communicators. Little Ones offers full-day care for children ages 2 to Pre-K. The original facility has 3 loosely-defined classroom areas and a gym, all with natural light. The whole space is open to the children during open play periods, so instead of a bunch of little classrooms each with a little blocks area (or art area etc.), each area is BIG and has a lot of space and materials. For circle time in the original facility, kids are split into 3 multi-age classes of 15 kids each, each with a head teacher and two assistant teachers. The new Pre-K space, serving a class of 24 kids with 3 teachers, is even cooler, since it has its own private outdoor space with a climbing area, and a two-storey / two-classroom building behind the outdoor space. At Little Ones, kids bring their lunch every day, and parents take care of snacks for the school one week a year. The cost is somewhat higher than other options at about $12/hour of care, and there's no Pre-K discount. Tuition is due far in advance on a "school year" basis, and refunds for unused time if you move are not guaranteed. Someone once warned me that Karen is wonderful with kids, but can sometimes come off as a little high-handed with adults: "it was like she was interviewing me, not the other way around." I do think that Karen is interested in the "fit" of families in her school. She asked me a few questions about my family and why we might be interested in Little Ones, which I thought was perfectly appropriate. My girls currently attend Lolly's/Brighter Babies and we've found our community there. That said, the parents I know who send their kids here are really happy. They're all so kind, well mannered, sing, and play with the babies like they're their own. (Ms. Dolker sings so beautifully in her native tongue!) We're first time parents, and they spend all day with our girl, so they've really helped with milestones, and have given great suggestions on a better feeding/nap schedule (different to what google has suggested). I love seeing the older kids run to Ms. Dolker and Ms. Kesang when they come pick up their younger siblings. They miss their previous teachers, and even spoke Tibetan!! There is no charge to leave your stroller for the day like a lot of other daycares in the neighborhood, but the space is a little tight. The other parents are super friendly and really make it a great community to be part of.

She makes the kids homemade food, and sends many photos during the day. She also does the most adorable and fun holiday celebrations with the kids and sent home really generous holiday gifts for my son, which was such a kind and beautiful surprise! She is extremely communicative, answers questions quickly and sends updates frequently. She is very understanding of changes to our schedule, if we were running late, wanted to pick him up early, or traveling out of town one week, she was always very accommodating. On a personal note, I did wish there were more opportunities to meet other families and kids that attended the daycare - I never really knew who my son spent time with during the day, and was hoping to build our community in the neighborhood as a new, first-time mom. You are also not allowed to go into the daycare room - she takes the kids at the door, and brings them out at the end of the day. We did have a tour of the room before he began attending, so we got to see the room in person at that time, but after that, you never really get to see where or how your child spends their time during the day apart from the photos she sends.
