The pasties come in three sizes, the smallest of which is "Large", so that should give you an idea of the kind of thing we're dealing with here. Serving a selection of pasties filled with everything from chicken and mushroom, to traditional cornish filling and my personal favourite of Steak and Stilton (so good it deserves to be capitalised), alongside pizza slices, pies and wraps, it sends out an amazing smell that captures anyone in five miles with an operating olfactory sense. Granted, the fare is slightly more expensive than Greggs and that ilk and it is still a chain store, so you may feel you aren't quite getting the personal touch you like on your pasties (for my money, I don't want a personal touch anywhere near my pasty. If I can believe it was made entirely by machine and that none of the filling has ever been touched by a large Cornish man named David, I'm happy), but the food is still great and you get what you pay for. Word of warning, though. If you're dating a Cornish girl, never mention that you like this place. They will instantly bludgeon you to death with a pasty they consider properly crimped.

She stopped about 10 yards before pasty heaven and with straining face laid all her bags onto the floor. She then started to holler, "Karen! Donna!" - at this point two slimmer girls about 20 yards ahead of her (beyond the shop) stopped and turned round. She continued her plea, "PASTIES!!!!" She shouted pointed out the Cornish Bakehouse to her 2 mates. Her 2 friends looked at each other looked back at the larger friend and the one shouted, "Come Trace, we've just had lunch!" Tracey, then with a pained look of resignation picked up her bags and struggled past the pasty shop and its wonderful aroma. I know how Tracey feels - I find it hard to walk past this shop and even though the pasties are fresh and tasty - they can never deliver beyond what their smell promises but hey it doesn't stop me finding out.

This shop in Grangetown is the original Clark's Pies outlet - the very first one that ever opened…read moreanywhere. It's located in Llanmaes Street in the Grangetown area, and has been open for decades apart from a brief period during World War II when it was closed due to wartime meat rationing. A second branch opened in the Canton area in the 1930s, and also one of the family's sons moved to Bedminster in Bristol to branch out there - so Clark's Pies are also very well known across Bristol. Personally I don't eat pies or pasties much, but this shop definitely deserves a review because it's a piece of Cardiff's history. The pastry is so chunky that the pie doesn't even need a foil tray to hold it in, which gives you a picture of how substantial they are. The exact recipe used in their pie filling remains a closely guarded secret - but it's based mainly on chunks of beef, potatoes and other vegetables, and thick gravy. All pie lovers should definitely head down to this shop to try one!

You've got three and half hours to complete your pie odyssey to the south of Grangetown. I was always in school between 10am and 1.30pm and no one wants a pie, not even a claaaarkies during the summer holidays. Yet I think the difficult location (probably easiest to jump on the 9A from town which passes the shop) and the tiny window of opportunity to visit adds to the mystique and legend of the pie. The shop itself is very Fifties, still rationing Fifties rather than almost the swinging Sixties, and functional with a small line in merchandise available. They should seriously push this like Spillers do with their t-shirts. I think every proud Cardiffian should make the pilgrimage at least once to this factory shop, the original source of the clarkies. You won't get any nearer finding out what the recipe is but will feel closer to the city.

I'm amazed there's only one review of this place as it's a little treasure…read more It's not a Greggs, so that's a great start. it's an all too rare, independent bakers in Cardiff, selling good quality, home made, fresh food without shedloads of preservatives. You can get pies, pasties, quiches, pizzas and wonderful cakes. My favourite is an apple cake thing which is lovely. Because they're a small concern it often depends what time of day you go as to what's left. The main reason I go in is because they make they're own bread. Importantly they don't just make bread from wheat but also from spelt. Quite a few people are gluten intolerant so spelt is a good alternative. If I'm not mistaken spelt is native to the UK and was the flour of choice before cheap wheat from the Commonwealth became common. So with transport costs high and a move towards food sourced locally spelt is likely to become an important part of our diet in the future. Get down there and give it a try but it does sell out quickly.
