I would never have made a reservation here if I hadn't been specifically assured that I could pay over the phone for my mother's Mother's Day dinner. Instead, my mother ended up being pressured to pay for her own meal because the server told her she was "cut" and needed payment immediately. When I tried to resolve the issue afterward, the general manager, Jason, was unbelievably unprofessional. Rather than helping figure out what happened to my credit card information, who it may have charged, or why the payment arrangement they promised wasn't honored, he attempted to gaslight me into thinking my mother never paid at all. Then told me my mother was confused, she left cash on the table for tip, which wasn't the case at all and proceeded to try to get off the phone with me which made me even more aggravated about the situation. The conversation escalated to the point where Jason actually told me to "fuck off." The fact that a manager would speak to a customer that way, tell the customer she is wrong and basically tell her that her mother is crazy-- especially over a Mother's Day dinner where my mother was left paying for herself after prior arrangements were confirmed -- is absolutely unacceptable. The complete lack of professionalism, accountability, and basic customer service was shocking. I highly recommend taking your business elsewhere. read more

The menu at Gregg's is very extensive. Some items are seasonal, but most of them are permanent menu items. My husband loves their grilled chicken salad. Fresh greens and a nice grilled chicken breast...could be a bit stronger in flavor, so I said to him to order it blackened next time. They have a great selection of summer cocktails as well. Good casual meal here at Gregg's. I ordered a chicken salad which was "Chinese style" since it had wonton strips, I guess. There was not too much that seemed Chinese about it but it was still pretty tasty. Very substantial portions and the salad was filling and fresh. We also shared a combination appetizer which had 2 potato skins (pretty much 2 potato halves, huge), a small stack of onion rings, a handful of mozzarella sticks, and 4 large chicken tenders. Our table of 3 could not finish the appetizer. It was a good value and assortment. Pretty cool that they have "frostie" drinks which are similar to a popular chain fast food place. We got dessert to go. My girlfriend said the apple pie was very meh. It smelled great but looked very dry and the apples were very crunchy. Maybe the time of year since it is not apple season. I got lemon meringue pie and it was excellent but very sweet. Desserts are pricy at Gregg's and I am sure a million calories but they are famous so it's hard to skip them. Ambiance is very very casual. Probably as casual as it gets! No frills atmosphere that is good for dining with family or friends. Not dressy, no need for reservations, etc. Only small thing that detracted from the ambiance was being seated next to the restrooms (tons of foot traffic) but now we know for next time. We were visiting the area for a work trip and stumbled in to Greg's as it was very close to our Airbnb. If you've never been, don't judge a book by its cover. This place has that rustic worn out diner feel when you walk in. However, the food & service were outstanding. My wife had the Barrio tacos and I had the fish n chips (only on Wednesday's). First thing you see when walking in is the HUGE selection of desserts in the case; it's like a mini Cheesecake Factory lol. It had a large menu selection and we were pretty happy with our food. A Rhode Island staple! I love the pickles - Like most every other person who's been here. I always love Gregg's for a lunch or dinner but tbh I don't go often enough. I got a corned beef Reuben recently and it was excellent. I love a good Reuben but there's a fine line between good greasy and too greasy and soggy - my sandwich was perfection last time. The bread was still toasty enough to be able to hand hold it. I know / it's a sandwich that should be standard, but do you ever get a Reuben and it's kinda soggy and can't be picked up nicely? Not here! I never have room for dessert - but I choose Gregg's if I'm bringing dessert somewhere. Their cakes are bomb! I'm partial to the lemon meringue pie that is sky high though. I don't find a lot of food to enjoy at Gregg's East Providence, most of their entrees are very bland. However, their Raspberry Coconut cake is a very good dessert. I very rarely get back to Rhode Island these days but when I do, Gregg's is always on the punch list. Is it fine dining? Maybe not in the conventional "white linen" sense but it is always a fine meal served quickly with a smile. Preferences depend on your taste but their specialty is exemplary comfort food with particular emphasis on cravable sandwiches and a well prepared breakfast menu. However, the food is really just a sideshow to their freshly baked pies and cakes which have the circumference of an asteroid and can not be finished by any human currently living. Dinner was a disaster. Seated at 6 :00 pm, drinks arrived 6:45. Waitress had no personality, no excuse for the delay. Finally took our order, dinners arrived at just before 8:00. Salad was not served, when we inquired as to where it was, waitress brought it after the meal was on our table. Two meals were totally inedible. Scallops must have been rewarmed as they were like rubber. Chicken Parmesan could not be cut with a steak knife! It also must have been reheated, possibly in the microwave as it was too tough to cut or chew. Waitress never came back for us to tell her about the quality, bus boy took our plates away still full and did not question why. Were never offered their fantastic desserts! Waitress litterally dropped the bill on the table in passing. We left 10% even though we didnt eat two dinners, but I still feel that even that was too much as she probably did not pick up our meals when they were ready, thus the reheating. First time here. At this location. We had a great waitress. She was very friendly and helpful with the menu. I wish I remembered her name. She really was great and it was Super Bowl Sunday so she had her jersey on!! Her recommendation for dessert was on point! My husband had the chocolate mouse cake and I had the apple strudel !! I'm not sure what people see in this restaurant. The only thing remotely appealing are the desserts. The staff is rude, the food is mediocre at best and the decor is boring. My last visit here, was my last attempt at trying to let this place redeem itself. Our food took so long, we left before it hit our table. When we found the manager on duty to complain, she said, "You don't have to pay for the food that you didn't eat." I know that I don't! The food has always been good at the restaurant in East Providence. I've eaten there many times over the years. I like the area downstairs. The bar is great, the staff is always on point. Here's the thing. Every time I eat upstairs I have a mediocre experience. For example. I ate there two weeks ago and sat upstairs, I ordered a simple chicken cutlet sandwich. Now you would think this is going to be satisfying, but no! Instead I got the equivalent of a piece of chicken jerky wrapped nicely in a torpedo roll with all the fixings. Horrible! What I used to get when I've ordered this sandwich in the past was an actual breast of chicken. What happened? Patties really? I guess the question is..Did you guy's start buying from a different vendor? If so buy real chicken and put it in your chicken cutlet. To their credit this doesn't happen often so I'll be back.
