The best no frills classic Greek food in Astoria: Yes please! The service is always very nice and welcoming. They start you off with fresh warm bread and the most delicious olive spread with olive oil to dip in. The Fried Smelt appetizer was lightly coated and fried without being too greasy. They give you a lot in the order. Great finger food to munch on for the rest of the night. The grilled octopus was nice and tender and simply cooked well. Very tasty but wished it had a bit of a char to it. The Pork or Chicken Souvlaki platters came with perfectly cooked skewers with a side of fries and feta salad. I asked to substitute my fries with lemon potatoes and they happily obliged. They have the best flavored lemon potatoes in the area! Bifteki can be stuffed with cheese if you'd like. I tried the one without the cheese and it was well seasoned and flavorful. They were like round balls of meatloaf seared on the outside but tender ground meat on the inside. I loved eating at Gregory's because it was a restaurant with friendly people who just wanted to serve you good food. It's just a little unassuming spot on a corner in Astoria, but it's serving up some really yummy food in a charming atmosphere. I really loved the cute decor filled with photos of Greece and little knick knacks. As everyone else says, this place is welcoming, unpretentious, and a solid dining experience all around. The food comes out quick and it's easy to feel comfortable and at home here. When my boyfriend and I couldn't decide whether to get a half liter or a liter of wine, our waitress reminded us that "it's Friday night, guys!" And so we decided on a liter. We each ordered the chicken souvlaki and were served really delicious bread / olive oil mixture to start. The entrees came with the most DELICIOUS lemon potatoes, two chicken skewers, two large pieces of perfect pita bread, tzatziki sauce, and a small Greek salad. It was a good amount of food and I couldn't even finish the chicken! I actually didn't think the chicken was that flavorful, but the lemon potatoes and bread and tzatziki were good enough to make up for that. Gregory's is such a nice break from going out in the city or even certain places in Brooklyn, where you feel the need to dress up to go out and whatnot. It's ok. I went here the other night with 2 friends for an early dinner. Very no frills - plastic table cloths, small dining room. Service: We were greeted with a smile and sat right away. The service was excellent. Food: We started with the greek salad. It was almost tasteless. The tomatoes were mealy and not very ripe, and there was no seasoning on the salad. Came with 2 stuffed grape leaves though which were great. For my entree I got the filet of sole stuffed with crabmeat and a side of lemon potatoes. The dish was excellent! Only downside was I feel they used imitation crab meat in the stuffing - but it was still delicious. Reasonably priced. read more

So my girlfriend and I decided to go eat here because she was craving Greek food. We got the Greek salad, the saganaki, and the lemon potatoes. They were all on point... ESPECIALLY the saganaki. I have had Greek food from Hawaii to salt lake city to Europe to NYC and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised to find such a good authentic and very affordable Greek restaurant. The house wine paired well with the flavors of Greece. Our waitress brought a wheat dessert which was complimentary that she had made. Came here for dinner with a group of 3. We had no issues getting a seat. As we walked in there were plenty of open tables. It's a nice cozy place. We weren't sure what to order so we asked the waitress to recommend some dishes. We ended up getting what she recommended. As she described her recommendations, it had a homey touch/feel to it. It is as if she enjoys her cultural food so much that she is trying to pass it down to us. The bread they gave us was surprisingly soft, warm and easy to eat. They give it to you with olive paste and olive oil. It was good. For appetizers, we got the grilled octopus. - this dish was amazing. The octopus was not rubbery. It was very soft/tender. Much much different from others that I have tried. I definitely prefer this one. I was surprised by how tender they were seeing that the pieces were relatively thick! It was seasoned well. Could taste the olive oil, some zest, and some salt. It was well balanced. For main course, we got the lamb chops, moussaka, and shrimp santorini with rice. Lamb chops: they were grilled nicely. I would have preferred it they were a little more medium rare but the meat was still tender. The meat relatively fell off the bone without any issues. The meat was seasoned well with spices and herbs. The vegetables that came with the dish could use some more work. They were overcooked and soggy. They were seasoned well, just not cooked properly. The moussaka was their special for the day. It was amazing. You could taste the subtle olive oil at the base of the dish. The potatoes were cooked to the point of being soft They had a nice subtle crisp and browning to the top layer of the custard. The meat was seasoned well, not dry at all. The eggplant was not fried, which is different from the traditional one where it is fried. I actually like it not being fried because it would have gotten soggy once baked. With each bite, the dish felt heavy and light at the same time. It looked like a delicate dish and once you cut into it, it fell apart easily. I highly recommend this dish. The shrimp santorini with rice was good. The rice was a little al dente. I think the tomato sauce needed to be thicker and more flavorful. Not enough tomato taste to it. The size of the shrimps were good but they were a little over cooked. Dish was seasoned well with lots of flavor. Overall it was a well composed dish but lacking in some techniques to make this dish truly perfect. Service was excellent. The staff did come by to ask us how were doing. Food came out almost immediately. Only thing we had to ask was for more water. The place was not busy at all so there wasn't really any excuse. One nice thing they did was gave us some dessert on the house. It was really nice of them. I don't know what it is but it tasted like rice pudding but in a cake format. It was overly sweet. It hit the spot just right. They did put too much cinnamon on it though. You can just dust it off. I would probably go again if I lived in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't recommend coming out of your way for Gregory's. This is an old-school, no-frills Greek seafood place that focuses on the food rather than the atmosphere. Usually my kind of place! The restaurant seems clean overall, but the dirty menus full of crumbs grossed me out! They need to be better about wiping things down like that... They start you off with some crusty bread with sesame seeds that comes with sort of a Kalamata olive tapenade to spread on it. It was alright but overpoweringly salty, so I would recommend eating it sparingly. I preferred the olive oil on the table to this stuff. The bread was decent but not great. The house white wine is not bad, pretty affordable and can be ordered by the glass, carafe, or half-carafe. They also seem to have Greek beers by the bottle. The octopus appetizer ($15) is excellent, really delicious, but a little bit of a small portion to share. I wish it came as an entree size because this was by far my favorite. Seafood for two ($45) it's pretty good and is a lot more food than what it looks like. You will be stuffed, trust me! Ours came with calamari (excellent), baby shark medallions (not bad), grilled whiting (not a fan), shrimp (yay!), crab-stuffed sole (delicious) and seafood stuffed clams (loved). We also had a side of lemon potatoes, which were also delicious but a tiny portion for $7. Are usually love Greek sweets but I did not at all like the free pastry they bring out afterward. It's this weird gelatinous triangle with some powdered cinnamon sprinkled on top. However, others may disagree, and it is nice that they give you a complimentary something at the end. An alright place overall, if I lived nearby, I would probably try it again. read more

Come here. Seriously. It looks small and homey but it's incredible. They have this amazing blended olive and olive oil dip that they give you with the free bread and I think I could eat a gallon of that alone. We tried the chicken souvlaki and the chicken gyro, both came with pita bread and Greek salad. Everything was amazing and felt very much like a local Greek place. We recommend trying it out when the weather is nice because they have outside seating with nice flowers and greek flags. 10/10 would recommend. They also give you free desert at the end! read more

I give this place 3 stars: I would not come back to eat here. 1- my husband and I went for lunch this week, especially after rave reviews about the grilled octopus which we love. It was delicious but for $18 the portion was tiny! Just about 1 and 1/2 legs, more like a tapas portion. 2- ordered dandelion greens which were supposed to be sautéed and they came tepid, lukewarm room temperature like they had been sitting on a counter all day, bland, and not bright green color but olive green and mushy, no flavor and very disappointing. If you want to come with a big group with a big appetite, oh boy, this place is for you. I followed my friend who was more familiar with the food and decided on whatever he wanted to get. We choose the beef gyro plate which we ended up sharing (the rest of our group all got plates for themselves). It was more than enough for the both of us as there was plenty to share. The portions are massive and everything is done well. The beef gyro was done delightfully well. It came wth 4 beef "patties", pita, salad, and a sauce. Also, for those of us who want to get the best bang for your buck, bread and olive tapenade to start and dessert at the end were offered alongside our meals. Our friends also had a full fish, chicken plates, fried cheese, and more. Every single one had happy bellies and a content smile in the end of the meal. Since phase 2 in NYC started yesterday, we were looking for a place with outdoor seating so we could sit down and have an official date. Gregory's had a cute outdoor seating area and it wasn't crowded so we had sufficient space away from other customers to enjoy our meal. Our server was very friendly and pleasant and our orders were taken in a very timely manner. We ordered a bottle of beer, glass of Greek wine, octopus to share, and each had our own plate of souvlaki. I've never had Greek wine before but it was pretty crispy and great to cook down on a hot nyc summer day. The octopus was delicious as well and it came with a small Greek salad which helped us feel a bit healthy. The souvlaki has a generous portion to it and came with both fries and Greek salad. All very delicious. We were very pleased with our time there and would def recommend! read more

Local and authentic Greek. A tiny mom-and-pop restaurant, seating no more than 5-7 tables off of the Astoria-Ditmars subway stop, surprisingly serves up some tasty and homestyle food. An early reviewer's comment about this place resembling a family restaurant that one would stumble upon in a remote town in Eastern Europe or the Greek Isles is completely spot-on. The food is honest and unfussy; the service is humane; and the atmosphere is humble. I found myself having several moments throughout our dinner asking myself, "Where the hell am I?" "Am I still in New York?" It's a nice feeling. Food is straightforward and rustic. Tzatziki of yogurt and cucumbers was thick and satisfying, topped off with a healthy douse of olive oil. Greek salad was of the classic variety, with monster chunks of cucumber, onions, tomatoes (albeit not so ripe in March), and feta. The show-stopper was the lamb meatballs, panfried on the outside, moist with onions and spices on the inside, and all topped off with copious amounts of Greek oregano. Special of the day of tilefish came highly recommended (and rightly so!): big meaty fishsteak, served with lemon and oregano and a side of broiled lemon potatoes. As a Greek, I've always found that it's very hard to find Greek restaurants that prepare food the way it is supposed be done and served in a manner that is reminiscent of traditional Greek hospitality, warmth, and friendliness. With that said, Gregory's - in my opinion - is 5 STARS all the way. From the moment I stepped in and was greeted by our wonderful server Voula, I was made to feel like I was walking into a small, local tavern somewhere in Greece. The restaurant is on the smaller side, with a corner location, outdoor seating, and is away from the noise and commotion of the elevated subway on 31st Street; all VERY GOOD things in my opinion! Our server Voula was extremely friendly, professional, with a warm and inviting smile - and she immediately made me and my party feel welcome. She told us the special of the day - which was Pastichio - and then gave us our menus and told us she'd be right back with bread/pita for our table. Looking at the menu there was plenty to choose from - from hot and cold appetizers "meze dishes" to main courses. When Voula returned with the bread and pita - and with a crushed olive and oil spread which was excellent - she asked us if we had any questions. I told her that we were going to do "meze dishes" and she immediately asked what we were in the mood for. Meat, seafood, etc - and made recommendations accordingly. We ended up ordering the following: Large Greek Salad Saganaki (Fried Cheese) Bekri Meze (Various Meats, Livers, Sweetbreads) sauteed in a Wine sauce with a tangy/peppery twist. Had Father's Day lunch with a party of 10 and the food was delicious. I really liked the meatball appetizer and I had a chicken sandwich. The free dessert was awesome and my LO loved it too. Every once in awhile you find a place that meets the hype of a "Thrillist" article review. I read that they sometimes have a roast goat or roast lamb, and that those are some of the best meat dishes in all of NYC, in addition to their standard lamb chops, which are always present on the menu. Looking at pictures on Yelp, I saw beautiful wild boar and roast pork dishes were apparently also occasionally on special. Sadly, those dishes were not there for us as my party of 8 sat down to eat. What was present, however, was incredibly reasonably-priced house wine in the best looking carafes I've ever seen. The complementary pita bread was served inside of a larger piece of bread. A unique thing to see. The olive tapenade was a fantastic, yet salty way to enjoy the pita and bread. The appetizers which were rapidly produced after ordering were grilled Octopus, Sardines, and Peppers stuffed with Cheese. All were enjoyed with the Octopus being the shining star of the group. Perfectly seasoned and prepared, the Octopus's flavor nearly shocked my senses because while I always enjoy Octopus, I did not expect it to be this flavorful. The meals that followed were some basic gyro plates, the hyped-up Lamb Chops, and the Shrimp Santorini. Those that had the gyro plates indicated that they did enjoy them. If I had to provide one criticism - the Lamb Chops were not as rare as I would have liked them - but it did not matter. They were very tasty and very well seasoned. The Shrimp Santorini, however, was amazing. You don't see this dish on many Greek menus, and that's a shame. It was very flavorful and complex. The shrimps had perfect texture as well. The sauce and rice just fit so well together. We were provided with a complementary carafe of wine, a few complementary side dishes - like an extra order of beets and lemon potatoes - all of which were really great (especially the lemon potatoes!), and complementary dessert - which was also very good - and not too sweet - which I prefer. We ended the meal with a double Greek coffee - and for that moment - as I sipped my piping hot, not-bitter, super-smooth, extra large mug of heightened caffeine - all seemed right with the world. read more

The food was very good, especially the grilled octopus and the cold appetizer plate (tzatziki, taramasolata, smokey eggplant salad and a spicy feta spread)! The Bakaliaro with scordalia was tasty, but we didn't remember it was fried so it was a little heavy and we could barely eat half. Glad to see dandelion greens on the menu, but they seemed a little overcooked. The white house wine was not bad if seemingly weak, but relatively inoffensive. My fiancee and I were sat at a table for 2, about 2 feet away from the side door. When we arrived, the waitress made a show of locking the door so that customers wouldn't come in that way and disturb us. This seemed fine even though other tables were available. About 15 minutes later, they sat another party by the front door, and suddenly, the side door where we were sitting was unlocked and had become the only door. For the remainder of the meal, the door opened every couple of minutes, blasting us with the 20-degree outside air as people tripped over us coming in and out of the restaurant. Food-wise, appetizers were good but entrees were not. Chicken was dry and tasteless and the calamari wasn't much better. Service completely disappeared when the entrees came, leaving us to wait 20 minutes for the check when all we wanted was to get out of there. We've had good experiences here in the past, which is why I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1. But I seriously doubt we'll be back. read more

Gregory's is the Greek food I've been looking for in Astoria. Yes there are tons of options, and yes they are pretty much all good, but Gregory's has got to have the best quality:price ratio all while maintaining a completely unpretentious, welcoming atmosphere. For $75 before tip, my date and I got the cold appetizer platter, grilled octopus, peppers stuffed with cheese, salted cod with lemon potatoes, and a half liter of house wine. Of the 4 dips on the platter, our two favorites were the babaganoush (super deliciously creamy and eggplant-y) and something we couldn't name that seemed seafoody with teeny tiny roe (surprisingly great). The peppers were also tasty, though a bit heavy for 2 people to split as you get I think 6 big pepper pieces. The octopus of course was perfect. And even though I wasn't really in the mood for anything fried, I have to say the salted cod was very well done, lightly battered & fried and silky inside, not at all overdone or dried out. The lemon potatoes and wine were the only two things I could directly compare between Gregory's and Kyclades. The wine is perfectly on par, and while I don't remember the Kyclades pricing I can tell you I was stoked to find $12 half liters and $24 full liters here. The lemon potatoes, however, were phenomenal. Significant step up from Kyclades. I had no idea I could appreciate potatoes so much. The only off notes were the items that came free: the bread and dessert. Neither were terrible but just meh. Though the olive spread in olive oil that came with the bread was yum. Service was friendly and helpful throughout. I will definitely be back and recommend to anyone looking for a great Greek meal. read more
