Whiskey and beautiful scenery are two things that I go out of my way to seek. I love taking photos…read moreof beautiful landscapes and interesting objects, and whiskey, that speaks for itself. Redlands Estate near Hobart has both. I visited Redlands Estate on a recent trip to Tasmania with my family. We were looking for a whiskey distillery to visit, and Redlands entered our radar via the renowned Lark Distillery's website. Redlands Estate is about a 30 minute drive from North Hobart, nestled amongst some very pretty real estate and farmlands. Whilst at the Estate you can go on a Garden Tour, a Distillery Tour, their own convict Bakery (operational in Summer) and a café (by appointment only). I was primarily there for the whisky of which Redlands Estate is one of only two 'paddock to bottle' single malt whisky distillery's in the world. The other is Kilchoman in Bonnie Scotland. This means that they do everything on site: grow the barley, draw their own water, steep, floor, malt and mash it and bottle it. Redlands started distilling their own whiskey in December 2012 and expect the first batch in a few years. In the meantime, with the assistance of the distiller, Dean, you can tour the old granary building, and learn about making whisky. You can also do a tasting of some local whiskey's including Lark. Speaking of, Dean's mentor is none other than Bill Lark of Lark Distillery. Dean is young, knowledgeable and very friendly. Redlands also produce some jams that are for sale, made from berries and fruits in the area. If you're in Hobart, and looking to visit a 'man in a shed' type establishment where you sample some of the local flavour, and learn something whilst you're at it, Redlands Estate is certainly worth a visit. If you're looking for some pretty scenery and the chance to see a platypus, you may also be so lucky. I can't wait till I can get back to Hobart and go visit Redlands Estate again, and see how the first batch of an exciting new whiskey on the Australian scene is shaping up!

Luckily, it's reasonably priced, efficient and actually pretty fun! A return trip in a small car will cost $30. Drive to the Kettering dock, where you will line up in lanes waiting for the ferry to arrive. Once cars are offloaded, you drive on up and shortly thereafter you are on your way, 15 minutes by water, to one of the most serene and beautiful places you may ever visit. We drank Moo Brew on the upper deck and stood in the sunshine, pretending we were characters from The Titanic (you know, the "I'm on top of the world!" bit, not the sinking dying bit). It was a really great way to mark the next part of our holiday. A word of warning: if you're trying to arrive or leave Bruny Island on a particularly busy day (say, the last day of a long weekend) then you need to arrive at the ferry well in advance to ensure you get a spot. When leaving the island, we arrived only 5 minutes beforehand to realise we wouldn't be able to make the next departure. Not to worry, we sat in the sun and enjoyed he surroundings for an hour while we waited for the ferry to go back and forth to Hobart, but had our flights back to Melbourne been any earlier we would have missed them.

Bruny Island Ferry: one way in, one way out…read more But seriously, for most of us, if we're wanting to get to Bruny Island... this is our only way. The Mirambeena's the double-decker and the Bowen's the single-level ferry, drive your car on board and park it where the high-vis types are pointing. Turn the engine off and then you can either sit inside your car like a party pooper or crawl out onto the deck to carouse around for the fifteen minutes it takes to get to the other side. The best way to head to Bruny is with a car full of friends, so not only can you have a grand time together on the island, but you can split the cost of the ferry, as it's a per-car charge and not a headcount charge. Bonus: put your smallest friend in the boot for even cheaper splitting. (Don't really do that; that's illegal.) Note: the address and the map pin are both ridiculously off the mark for stupid reasons, Yelp. The Bruny Island ferry goes back and forth between the marina in Kettering and the tip of Bruny island every day, whether their administration office is in Glenorchy or not (I think this has been the reasoning I've been given when attempting to amend the listing in the past) it's a bit silly to have that listed as the location.

The Northgate Coffee Club is one of your better options in the Northern suburbs for a bit to eat and a decent coffee. I'm not a fan of their pizza, but the BLTs, burgers and especially desserts are all pretty good. The coffee is fairly decent and the staff are very friendly. My wife and I recently went in there for the first time in over a year and we were still greeted as if we were everyday regulars.
