I got an email from the Australian Writers Guild, a bulletin if you will, and one of the points in the bulletin was a competition. Write an acrostic poem using the word ICE and you would win tickets to the play, Under Ice at by the Griffin Theatre Company.
I wrote my poem, nothing fantastic, but I guess it was good enough to score a freebie. I grabbed a friend and we went to the theatre.
The Stables Theatre, in which the Griffin Theatre Company works out of, is located in the centre of Kings Cross, just to the right as you come up William Street. It is thusly called as it is a converted Stable and hence has a really interesting charm to its architecture that you tend not to get from many other theatres.
The performance space is intimate and every seat is sure to have a good view of the action unfolding before them.
The play I saw was okay, not amazing, but it utilised some interesting techniques, for example; a scrolling marquee across the top of the stage that spelt out key words and phrases throughout the production.
I don't want to talk too much about the play as I'm supposed to be talking about the theatre, so I won't delve into the performances, the writing or the direction, not that I'm qualified to do that anyway. But what I will do to finish this piece off is read you my poem that won me free tickets and introduced me to the Stables Theatre and to the Griffin Theatre Company.
