I ordered the plain meat pie, which is actually plain beef, not a fully "plain" pie. All their pies have the listed ingredient PLUS beef (ie if it's listed as "mushroom", it's actually mushroom and beef), which wasn't immediately intuitive for me. This pie was perfectly flaky, served hot, and I have no idea how the pie crust contained the juicy deliciousness of the beef filling. 100% recommend! Vegans, stay away, although they were very nice and recommended near by vegetarian friendly restaurants.

It's true, the jam donuts use mock cream but if you take a look to the right of the counter, there is a whole case of cakes and pastries that use fresh cream and custard such as beestings, apple turnover, apples puff, chocolate eclairs etc. The bakery is popular with travellers as it's directly on the Bruce Highway with plenty of parking right in front for those with caravans. They have a a large undercover eating area in front of the bakery and make a pretty decent flat white. A great place to stop for a leg stretch and break before you head off towards Bundaberg (the coast) or out to Western Qld.

It was about 6pm on a Friday night and when we were greeted we were asked if we'd made reservations which we hadn't - I overheard another employee telling some patrons this particular night has been fully booked for two weeks. Luckily they found a table for us and we sat down to browse the menu. There's a pretty huge selection to choose from. I picked an Asian wok noodle dish, and my husband decided on a pulled pork pizza. Both meals were pretty good (I'd give them 3 stars each) and very filling. With drinks our order totaled to about $55 AUD which is considered pretty affordable/average here. The vibe in the restaurant was lively and family-friendly. As we got set to leave, there was even live music starting. Not sure what else is in the area, but as far as food goes, Spotted Dog Tavern is a decent choice for dinner if you're passing through.

And no wonder - the food was delicious, the staff were friendly and the prices were reasonable. We were particularly impressed with the gelato - it was good (small batch artisan production) and at $5 for two scoops, cheaper than the usual places we buy gelato from!
