I've been going to Joe for almost a year now, and I never need to look for another barbershop again. Groom most definitely is a barbershop, rather than a salon, and it's nothing short of fantastic. For 4 years or so, I'd been paying way too much to get a really simple haircut, but once I decided to grow my hair a little longer, I knew I had to find a real barber. Now I'm paying less but getting so much more. Joe really knows what he's doing and clearly is passionate about it, and he's been helping me gradually grow my hair longer for the better part of a year. The in-between growing out phases aren't so bad thanks to him, and he's helped me develop a real hairstyle for the first time in years. Plain and simple, Joe will give you a great haircut -- but it's all the other things about Groom that make it fantastic. The place is almost anachronistic, but in a "Mad Men" sort of way. It looks like a barbershop out of the 60s, and the old jazz music definitely lends to that vibe. Joe always cleans up your neck with hot shaving cream and a straight razor, and you at least up until recently, you could get a straight razor shave there (get better soon, Sal). On my dad's 65th birthday, he and I went to Groom and both got haircuts and straight razor shaves (thanks for hooking us up, Joe!), and it really was a special day. I have been getting going to Groom since I moved to Philadelphia over three years ago. BJ, was recommended to me by a neighbor as being fabulous. Now -- i am a devoted female client--and I absolutely love Groom. BJ is phenomenal and has given me the best buzz and short haircuts ever. If Don Draper were a real person alive today in Philly, Groom is where he would go for a haircut and shave. It has a great retro style and feel without pandering or being condescending. I can't speak for the other two stylists/barbers, but Joe is incredible! I've never left Groom upset, feeling like I got a bad cut. I'm very conflicted writing this review as all praise might make it harder for me to book an appointment. The only downsides to Groom are that they don't take cards and it's really hard to get a walk-in. I only recently started to go here for my grooming needs, but I am glad I did! This is an old school 'barber' and I use that term lightly. They really care about your hair and how you want it done; without attempting to push you out quickly. The straight razor cut on your neck is awesome and the little massage they give afterwards relaxes you. This place is affordable too! I have recommended this place to all of my friends. Tried this place based on the recommendations here. I used to go back when it was Harry's and I just needed a cheap haircut (regardless of how bad it often turned out). I think its now impossible to get a decent haircut in the city without spending $20 before tip, which stinks when your hair grows fast enough to warrant a trim every 2 weeks. I liked Joe, and I liked the ambiance of his shop, but to be honest I wasn't crazy about the haircut. I may have done a bad job describing what I wanted, but I ended up with a much shorter cut than expected. It's a shame, because I genuinely liked everything but the final product. It's a story you've heard before: My usual girl was booked. I needed a last minute haircut big-time. I had a wedding to attend... I sought out the advice of a couple of my friends and they gave me over-whelming "YES!" for Groom. So I called, made my appointment and went on in. Walking into, or more accurately, down to Groom is like stepping back in time. The subway tiles, the two vintage barber's chairs, jazz on the hifi - Groom gets an A+ for vibe. The barber is an older dude, the pure definition of "old school". He just about fell over laughing at how long and out of control my hair was, asked me "how short?" and got down to business. I also asked him if he could "clean up" my beard. The haircut was great, hot lather around the sideburns and neck. He trimmed my beard with the clippers, cleaned it up with a little more lather and the razor and had me looking ready kill. So why the 2 star review? After a final clean with the brush, I hop out of the chair and he says "$35". Now my friends had told me it was "around $20" so that was a bit of a shock. I guess the extra came from cleaning up my beard but that was a lot higher than I expected because my usual girl charges me about $25 out the door for a shampoo, haircut and beard job (and does a great job). With tip at Groom I was in well over $40. Luckily I had the cash because they don't take plastic. I guess I might go back again in a pinch but I will trim my own beard. I went last night and got my haircut by Frank. He was awesome. He was so friendly, got to know me and was very attentive to my haircut. I am used to not getting as much attention as I received from him. It was one of the best haircuts I have ever gotten, topped off with a head massage and a hot lather neck shave! For a heads up, I called on Tuesday and was able to get an appointment by Thursday after work. They do not accept cards, cash only and very reasonably priced! After some spectacularly bad experiences at other places that will remain nameless, I have finally found a great men's salon in downtown Philly. My cut was perfect, for $24. The only negatives are that you can't be claustrophobic (cramped basement), and you could cut the testosterone with a knife in there. But for a cut this good, I don't mind. read more

I've been a client for the past 6 months. I personally believe in loyalty and I like to stick around the same place. My barber has been good sometimes, bad others, but today was a disaster. Not only cant follow simple instructions but I am mortified of looking like a mess. The right side of my head is now about 5 inches long, while the left is not even an inch long. My head looks like a burned victim. I simply asked not to cut the top but instead my head got mutilated. I've recently moved from NY to Philly and have had three haircuts since then. The first I got was at Nic Grooming and while it was an alright cut, it took much longer than it usually does and was pretty expensive ($45 with tip). The second I got was at the Racquetball Club in Center City and it was just a bad cut all around. It was cheaper, but it was cut uneven and grew in terribly. The third I got was at Groom. I can't believe how good this cut came out, it's probably the best I've ever gotten. Not to mention the community atmosphere and friendly nature of everyone who worked there. I recently walked into Groom after a lifetime going to generic, soulless chains (like Hair Cuttery and Supercuts) and was incredibly pleased. I didn't realize the extent of their full schedule and so I walked in on a day when they had no openings. Frank gave me the option to wait and see whether his next appt would show up. They didn't so I lucked out. Super satisfied with everything. The cut was good, the conversation was nice, the ambiance was relaxing... and the employees seem interesting. It's not like, listening to q102 while people yap with each other about what they're eating for lunch. Frank and I talked about Bill Murray and the spiciest of all Asian foods. It was a good time and well worth the moderate price increase over the dime a dozen salon chains. I can only speak to Frank's cut personally, I guess, but everyone who walked out while I was waiting and while I was in the chair looked as though they received an excellent cut. I went in for the very first time and was paired with Dakota. Dakota was phenomenal. Dakota made me feel completely comfortable as soon as I sat in the chair, as someone who gets anxious fairly easily this was a major bonus. The haircut I received from Dakota was exactly what I was looking for. There was never a moment I didn't completely trust him. In addition to giving a wonderful haircut, Dakota was also great with conversation. Started going here about four months ago to see Mike. I will say it's consistantly the best haircut I've ever had. The laid back company and overall atmosphere is pretty cool, which makes it worth the price every few weeks (in my opinion). I've always made an appointment and have never had to wait for more than 5 minutes tops. Very cool authentic barbershop in the basement of an old hotel. Apparently it's been a barbershop since the 1920s( not the same owners the whole time). I didn't know it was appointment only, but I got lucky walking in to an opening. The cut was top notch. Got a side part. A little buzzer work, faded sides, hard part etc. he cleaned up my neckline and lined my beard with a straight razor. Will definitely be returning here. read more

The vibe and ambiance are outstanding here and every barber in there is extremely talented, experienced and friendly, especially Katjanna. I'm incredibly indecisive and have a hard time explaining what I want when I get a haircut but Katjanna has always understood what I was asking for, given exceptional advice when it comes to my hair, and then executed a fantastic cut, all while having a delightful conversation and fake laughing at my inappropriate jokes. To start I should say I'm super picky about barbers so when I moved to Philly almost 3 years ago, finding one was a process. I get a razor fade provided I find someone whose able to do them correctly. Sean has been doing my hair for over 2 years,every 2 weeks and its the best haircut I've ever had. I base that on the amount of compliments I get on it. Price is good, I think it's $24 or $25, I give him 40 becasue that's what I was used to paying for cuts from barbers who were mostly pretty bad. Cool location, a friendly atmosphere and more than a few excellent barbers made this a pretty easy choice once I went there. I've been to Groom a few times now to get my hair cut, and I hope I never have to get it cut anywhere else. Joe is my favorite; he combines a great haircut with a warm, friendly personality. As others have mentioned, the atmosphere at Groom is casual and cool (but not in an overly-showy way). I imagine it's kind of like how a sauna would feel without the tension of everyone being half-naked or the extreme temperature/humidity levels. And for $24 (what I paid last time), it's quite a deal. Other things to note: -The schedule gets full early in the week (around Tuesday, I think), so plan ahead and call early to set up an appointment. -Bring cash (it is my understanding that they do not accept credit cards). -The hot lather + straight razor neck shave is as good as everyone says it is; I wish normal shaving felt so smooth and satisfying. -Free parking is pretty hard to come by in the surrounding area, so I would recommend using public transportation if you don't want to pay for a spot. -When you go into the building (the Arts Condo), you use the intercom thing to call them up and they'll buzz you in. The best barber shop ever! Joe is my man. I searched for many years to find the right haircut, and Joe has always given me a fantastic cut. His input on style is also great. I had my first experience with Groom today, and I must say that I'm very disappointed. I called on a Monday, and set up an appointment for Friday at 11:30am with Frank. I didn't know which barber I wanted to cut my hair since I'd never been there, so I was placed with Frank. I removed one star because I didn't sit down in a chair until noon. I value punctuality, and if I'm told my appointment is for 11:30am, I expect my appointment to being somewhere near 11:30am, or at least be apologized to when my cut starts very late like it did. I removed another star because I believe that I was deceived as far as who was going to cut my hair. After I set up my appointment, I looked at the Groom website to learn more about who would be cutting my hair. I see that there are three barbers: Joe, Frank, and BJ. So, needless to say, I expected that the Frank I saw on the website would be cutting my hair. That was not the case. I have since learned that there might be two Franks that cut hair at Groom, and that the other one may have cut my hair. From a business perspective, it would make sense to pair new customers with your better barbers to ensure that they return. Regardless, Frank, or whoever it was that actually cut my hair, made no attempt at conversation, seemed very uninterested in doing his job, and ultimately did not give me what I asked for. I even tried to make it easy for him by showing him a picture. That didn't help. He blended my hair incorrectly, took off too much from the top of my head when I specifically told him to keep it long, and was generally unpleasant. After that cut, I will have to wait four to six months to get some of my hair to the length I want it. So, I removed one start for the quality of the cut. I get it. You need to hire more barbers to satisfy demand. But when I see three barbers on the website, then walk in to see 5 or 6 barbers, I get nervous. Who are these people? I noticed in another review, someone had their hair cut by a student barber. I can't know if that's what happened to me. That just seems dishonest. Maybe the other barbers that work there are great barbers. But if that's the case, why not advertise them on the website? I'm willing to bet Joe will comment on this review and make it out to be my fault. But in the end, the way I was treated is no way to treat a new customer. I will likely not return. read more
