As part of our contract, they mow, weed eat and blow weekly, mulch twice a year, aerate and seed twice a year, do fall leave pick up three times or more if needed, they trim the front hedges and are available to do select services for homeowners at reasonable costs. Our lawns and landscapes have never looked so good. These guys and gals are hard-working. They never complain and if something doesn't look right, they return and make it right. Recently their contract came up for renegotiation and even though the prices were raised a bit, the majority of homeowners in our association didn't even blink an eye before giving the thumbs up to awarding another year's long contract. I hired ECR to prep and seed an area of my back lawn I had tilled up and tilled in compost to…read morerevitalize the soil. I would have done it myself but rain and work kept me getting it done. They quoted me $2100, which I found excessive, but if they could get here and get it done, it was acceptable. I supplied the seed and the hay. My wife told me they were there for 3 hours, which I found was a very short time for the size of the area, approximately 2800 sqft. The first thing I noticed was they had areas the hay was 8" or more deep...normal depth should be 1.5"-3" so the new seed isn't stifled. I raised the concern and asked them to come out and correct it, but Evan assured me that was there way and it works. About two weeks later, held up by rain, I finally got out to inspect the growth and noticed the ground had not been rolled and leveled...I was not happy at all. It looks like an open field, not a backyard. I messaged for Evan to come out and redo the work, mentioning now I know why his kid (worker) was only here for 3 hours. Evan showed up as I requested and immediately verbally took offense at the term "kid" since he had done the work and he was a 30 year old married man with children...I found this level of offense very odd. So we then went out to see the area in question. He informed me I didn't specify to level and roll the ground and they don't do that in East Tennessee...another response I found interesting. At that time I decided to let him know I had been a professional landscaper and had done commercial and residential jobs and leveling and rolling is part of putting down grass seed...he still disagreed. His argument was like an automotive paint shop arguing you hadn't told them to sand and prep the car surfaces before they sprayed the new paint you requested, after charging you $10k for the job. Evan accused me of being one of those people who would come back to him after 2 years because the grass died. Then he proceeded to tell me Californians are so particular about their yards...isn't every client that pays him to do work? He went on to say he wouldn't cut the grass for a year and the ground will level itself over time...are you kidding me? If expecting professionals to know their job and execute it correctly for the money paid is being particular, then yes I am, as everyone should be. I informed him I had stopped payment on the check I sent him. After more discussion, I agreed to pay him a reduced amount of $1600. I finally went out a week ago, about two months after the job was done, and cut the grass that was growing in splotches. Well guess what, where the hay was so deep...no grass! It was horrible. Saying I was a little miffed would be an understatement. So I got out the grass rake for my riding lawnmower, beating myself to death on the incredibly uneven ground, and removed as much of the hay as I could with that, then last week I reseeded and set up sprinklers instead of using hay this time...time will tell. These guys may be good at mow and blow services, or tree services, but anything else, be wary and know every aspect of the job you need being VERY specific about every step of the process when discussing it. Then get every step in writing. As far as putting in new lawn, seeded or sod, steer clear. They do not know what they are doing and know nothing about dealing with a clients concerns after the fact.
