This is a place to go for cheap drinks and good conversation. They have a dance floor which gets packed on seemingly random nights. I'm not sure how they manage to keep prices so low, but from what I understand it is somewhat University subsidized. One of my favorite bars in New Haven for sure. Don't get five stars for three reasons, but two of these reasons actually sort of has a redemption. 1) it is cash-only, which is kind of inconvenient (redemption: they have an ATM with really low service fees). 2) you have to be affiliated with the University or go as a guest. My issue is that there's a cap on the number of people each University person can get in. (redemption: this is a good way to be selective about the patrons inside) 3) My coat got stolen a few trips ago - and it was in the middle of winter. I called an Uber - but it was still extremely unpleasant. I guess that gives you an idea of how much I like the bar in that I returned.. read more

GPSCY is a wonderful place for Yale graduate students to assemble and relax. For those who partake, drink specials are offered daily (I think). GPSCY also hosts fun and fabulous events, such as the annual Halloween party, speed dating, and so on. The staff are wonderful, the ambiance is casual, and often there's a game on (yay!). It's a good place to meet up with friends or make new ones! It's also a great venue to bump into friends and acquaintances from other departments. Having been to GPSCY dozens of times over my past 4 years living in The Haven, I figured it was time I actually give it some Yelp love. Yes, this is a CASH-ONLY Yale graduate bar and my theory is that this place must be subsidized by the University because how the hell can they offer such a high quality scotch selection for the bargain basement prices of $6 for a decent neat pour. HR should really list this place as part of your benefits package, because if you're not coming here for cheap drinks then you are definitely not utilizing all that your affiliation with Yale University has to offer! And you don't even have to work directly for Yale to enjoy the perks, because up until a year ago I had zero affiliation, yet often frequented this place with friends because they do allow you to bring plus 1s to drink their cheap booze. With such limited options for outdoor patio nightlife, GPSCY's spacious outdoor area appeals to those wanted to burn down a pack of stoggs, but also to those looking to gather a large group of friends to enjoy the warm weather in a super casual setting. Karoake night can be pretty painful at times, plus you have to endure the dirty socks smell of the main downstairs bar, but it's a fun way to mix it up. The pool tables are also a good time killer and alternate form of entertainment if you get tired of socializing with your drunk friends. Usually just a stop as we bar crawl around the downtown scene, you know what you're going to get when you come here. For the measly $3 cover, you will get discounted prices on beer and alcohol in a laid back, frat-basement like setting. Plus you will get the opportunity to interact with the highly intellectual and sometimes socially awkward Yale community. A perfect change-of-pace from the usual downtown scene if you're looking for a cheap night out while rocking your shorts and flip-flops. read more

This place has about zero inherent atmosphere, but it's a decent spot for grad student parties, with cheap drinks and a pretty chill, probably nerdy crowd. The drinks offered are pretty standard, though the potency and relative potability of mixed drinks seems to vary a lot depending on which grad student is behind the bar. I've definitely had few vodka diets that I gulped down while gagging at every sip. GPSCY is spacious, with a pub-like area downstairs and a more dancey room upstairs, as well as a room equipped with karaoke for private parties. Mostly, I stick to the relaxed downstairs, as there are some places to sit as well as plenty of room and low enough volume for actual conversation. I've also been out on the patio all of once - it was for a welcome event that involved free burgers and it was an utter clusterfuck. There isn't anything special about GPSCY, but it's not a bad spot for a party or a few drinks. I doubt there are many grad students who never step foot in the place, but I doubt too that there are many who miss it after graduation. read more

Grad student haven. Love this place. The drinks here are extremely cheap and yet still good, which is more than you can say about a lot of places. GPSCY is more than just a pub though: it's also used for a multitude of events and parties. They have an upstairs area, a downstairs area, and an outside area. The downstairs area is used for something they call Trivia Night, which happens on Mondays and is super fun with a group of friends. The upstairs area is for dancing and live music. The outdoor patio area is great for summer and pizza and beer. I haven't personally experienced this place as a grad student, but I can definitely feel that it's a great spot for the graduate community here! read more

This is a really fun bar specifically for Yale graduate and professional students. They offer really great discounts on drinks in a decent sized 3 level spot tucked away in the campus. There is plenty of room with a self check coat/bag area. Cover is only $5 for their Halloween event, as well as for most evenings. Some drinks and pizza was included for their Halloween event, and their staff are very friendly. Their are a bunch of other activities too including pool tables, etc. read more

Chalk up these five stars to appreciating it more now that I've left. To paraphrase a recent SNL joke about McDonalds, no one -goes- to Gpscy. You -end up- at Gpscy. It's the closest thing to a real-life Cheers, except everyone's too awkward and scared to talk to each other. And there's six dollar top shelf bourbon and scotch, how can you beat that? Membership is totally worth it, non-Yalies, if you go in, remember, any strange looks you get aren't because the regulars are smug, they just don't know what to say! Try talking about Radiohead. GPSCY is a graduate student vortex. It's a good place to meet other cool or socially awkward grad students. Sometimes there are mixers where mingling among students in other departments is encouraged. I like it when they have dance parties in the ballroom upstairs. The patio outside is nice for the summer, especially when they have BBQs. Sometimes I like going there for Friday karoake night. If you don't get there early enough to put in your song, you will wait an hour or more. You might not even get to sing. The coordinator does not shuffle people around, so you see the same 3 or 4 people coming up to sing. Boo! Buy your membership, especially if you're a new grad student. You'll probably find yourself there even if you, for some reason, try to avoid it! read more

GPSCY is really nothing special. It's not fantastic, it's not horrible, it just is. And it's cheap. There's a cover if you're not a Yale student, and I think you have to arrive with a Yalie, but it's something like $3 and the drinks are still cheap. Honestly though, I've only been there two or three times when there hasn't been a crazy party (Halloween) and it's nothing special. The Halloween party is usually fun although competely packed to the bursting point. I suppose if I was a Yalie I could appreciate it much more, however I'm of the mindset that you don't meet interesting people and expand your horizons when you stick with a certain clique. I don't like this place. My main complaint is lack of transparency about its management. It's not clear exactly who runs it or how it is run, and there is no advertised way to give any useful feedback to the people who run it, and it's not transparent how to influence how it is run (are there people who are elected in some way? is it even democratic at all?). As a paying member of GPSCY, I feel like I should have input into how it is run. And I feel like everyone should have a right to know (i.e. it should be published on a webpage) exactly how GPSCY is managed, and exactly where it gets its funding and how it uses it. Ok, now, about the bar: DRINKS: The drink specials here focus on cheap drinks. I like expensive drinks; I don't want to drink cheap drinks, even if they're free. There are never drink specials on anything I want to drink, and the types of drinks on special are fixed from week to week so there is no variety. They do have some good beers on tap, however, which is a huge plus for me...but they don't rotate them very much. Blah! And of course this place is still cheaper than most bars! ATMOSPHERE: This place is hit-or-miss. In the warmer months, they have a very nice outdoor patio, although they NEVER have enough chairs, which is a bit annoying if you want to sit and chill. The inside is quite nice--very pleasant...but...who comes here? On many nights (including a typical Friday or Saturday night), this place is completely empty until late, and even then it is still sometimes almost empty. On Thursdays, it can be packed, an absolute zoo! I don't like this...I like homey places where you can get to know the regulars and just talk to people and chill. And I like dancing too. But whenever I've come to GPSCY, it has either been completely empty, or completely packed. Not my kind of place, and as far as I'm concerned, no one seems to care about this besides me. HOURS: This place doesn't open till 8PM. WTF? No happy hour hours...and since most events on the Yale campus end well before 8 (libraries close before 5 on weekends) , you have to find something (i.e. nothing) to do before this place opens. And oddly...no one ever comes to this place right when it opens...people start rolling in at 10, 11, etc. So my complaint about the hours isn't just the hours but it's how people use them (which is probably WHY their hours are shitty). The space here is rented out to other groups occasionally. The process for doing this is neither advertised nor transparent. However, I'm grateful that GPSCY lets other groups (like tango and blues) use the space, because they have a very nice dance floor. I only wish they would open this space up to similar groups more often, during the time periods when the bar is not in use. There are many nights where the upstairs dance floor is closed off and not in use--would it be possible to let various dance groups come in and use it? And what about during the day? This place is always closed...can groups use the space during the day? What's the best part about this place? The bartenders are usually very nice. Very big plus. read more

As a Yale-subsidized graduate student bar, GPSCY is the place to be on pretty much any night you want to round up your friends for a night out. It's a little dive-y, but without the sticky griminess of your run-of-the-mill student bar. Check the website before coming, they often host events for school organizations/deals you might want to be aware of before coming. There are small rooms for a more intimate feel on the upper floor(s), a dance floor on the second level where you can find the occasional couple blues-dancing while the rest jive with club-worthy energy. Expect it to be hot inside; at times it feels suffocatingly hot and humid, so you'll find that windows are a popular seating choice. There's an outdoor area (accessible from lower floor) that offers a nice respite from the heat and humidity inside. It's very loud inside though, so expect to use your outdoor voices indoors! Friday night is karaoke night; the times I've gone the crowd has always been super supportive of all performers. Thursday is for dancing on the upper floor. That said, dancing to karaoke is well-accepted (you could probably dance whenever you wanted and no one would mind, but you'll have more company dancing on a Thurs/Friday). It's a bit of a toss-up deciding what to wear. There isn't a dress code, really; you'll have people in tshirts and shorts alongside people in collared shirts. A loosely dressy kind of dressy-casual seems to be the general norm, although you can still find plenty of people in tshirts and camis, in sundresses, clubbing dresses and collared shirts. The bathrooms are oddly placed (men's on upper floor, women's on lower floor), but are generally well-maintained despite being small enough to warrant lines every time I've visited. You might not be getting a wide array of interesting drinks here, but whatever you drink will probably be cheap. The standard/cheaper mixed drinks like vodka cranberry, gin and tonic, etc. are priced at $2, and bottled beer is $3.50. There are deals throughout the week that make alcohol even cheaper. Water coolers are set out with plastic cups on the two main floors, so you can serve yourself cold water. Cover is about $3 normally (regardless of gender), but you can pay a one-time fee of $20 to cover the rest of the school year. read more

Some reviewers don't seem to understand what this bar is all about, so here goes: this is a graduate student & friends bar for Yale students. Why? It's not because we think we're better than everybody else (ok, well, some do), but because we need a place where we can go without running into either our students or our bosses. Simple as that. Fewer things as awkward as running into your drunk undergraduate students acting out at a bar around town. Thanks to GPSCY, we can avoid that. Second, most of us (in the Ph.D programs at least) live ONLY on a small graduate student stipend. It is then good to be able to relax on a budget, hence the cheap drinks, and probably the lack of expensive drinks - there is no snobbery related to who can afford what. There are, however, good beers to choose from, and the drinks are generally pretty nice. There are also occasional parties and a large outside patio. There are also occasional pretty interesting events going on; for example the Turkish Night is pretty awesome, and no, you don't need to be Turkish to participate (I'm not), Generally, it's a pretty cool place. If you are a graduate student, it is also pretty easy to get involved and help out with the bar - all you need to do is talk to people. I didn't do this but I have friends who did. But (I am mostly replying to a previous reviewer here) you have to keep in mind that paying the price for a whiskey shot (well, a shot of whiskey at other bars around town, not here) for a year-long membership - just like hundreds if not thousands of others - doesn't give you the right to manage the bar. read more

Gpscy pronounced gypsy is located in the graduate student center basement. It has a big screen TV, couches, and two pool tables. Go to the pool table on the left because it's broken and you get to play for free (normally a dollar?). They also have very short pool sticks which I thought was hilariously fun to play with. Since I'm not a Yale student, I just had to pay one buck. They also have a dance floor upstairs. The night we went it was rented out for a birthday party. They said we could go if they were cool with it. Of course no one said anything to me with my moves :P Nice place to get some drinks, play pool and dance without having to pay too much for cover. read more

Who dosnt love some GPSCY... really... I took a few fraternity brothers who were in town here once...they were impressed that Yale Grad and Prof students have their own bar, so one says that he will buy this round of drinks for the three of us... total comes to something like $10... and he proceeds to have an argument with the bartender about how he is going to buy all three drinks... back and forth, back and forth about how the total really is just $10, to which the bartender finally says that he will charge us $30 and take $20 as a tip if it will shut him up. He payed $10 and left a $20 tip just because it made him laugh. I guess that sums up a good bit of GPSCY... its for students... by students... just not undergraduate students. There is an annual member, something to the tune of $15, or something like that. Its worth it... go twice (and you will), and it pays for itself. The best part though... the backyard (though recently truncated so that there could be a new truck turn around... not that I'm bitter). Its great for some summer nights, a cold drink... and some live music. read more

If you are related to the Yale Community, this is your place. You can only enter with your Yale ID or with a friend with a Yale ID that invites you as a guest. Every day you have different activities, from karaoke to open mic, dance parties, special nights like Halloween, Oktoberfest, when they have free food and drinks. It's really really great and cheap! I think it is the cheapest place in New Haven, but I'm quite new in the city. You have to pay a cover to enter, that is $3 to $5 (it depends on the day of the week), but if you are going often, I think it's better to pay the annual membership, that it's only $20 and you can go as many times as you want! They have draft beers for $2-$4.5, and also wine and other mixed drinks (I've never tried). The only problem is that you can't have anything to eat there, except when it's a special party. So you need to eat before or after going there. Someone told me that you are allowed to bring your own food or to order some pizza, but I have never seen people doing it. Every Thursday there is a Dance party on the second floor, and sometimes they have also dance parties during other days. It's a cash only bar, but they have an ATM inside if you forgot your cash ;) read more

I don't frequent the pub downstairs, but I've been to several private parties in "The Lounge" area, which is one of the best deals in town. You can rent out the space for like $50/night and the drinks are pretty cheap. Bring your own ipod, plug in, and it's like throwing a party in your living room except it's probably bigger than your apartment and you don't have to clean up afterwards. read more

I love this place. You get the pub atmosphere on the bottom floor, with cheap drinks, friendly staff and bartenders, and a dance floor on the upper floor. They also have a great outdoor space, which is so nice in the spring and fall. There's always an interesting crowd and some kind of drink special going on. I paid my $3 to get in with a friend who is a Yale grad student and it was well worth it. Her former roommate is a bartender here so she also knows everyone who works at GPSCY. I had a few Blue Moons but my favorite part was the karaoke. I didn't perform myself since I can't sing at all but the people who did sing were actually amazing! The bar was fairly empty since now it's the summertime but it started getting crowded just when we decided to leave. GPSCYs is a Yale bar. They have cheap drinks and a lot of space. There are three floors and an outdoor area/patio. Once a month they also have tastings. I have been to champagne tastings, tequila tastings, and various types of wine tastings there (ex: Southern California wines, strange Spanish wines). They give you 10-12 liquors/drinks to sample and a short slide show on the topic. A great, low key bar. read more

I've always had a raging time at Gpscy despite not being a Yale graduate student (or even a Yale student). Sure, the staff (particularly at the door) give non-community members a bit of a glare, but the drinks are cheap and the conversation is potent (alcoholically and semi-intellectually). How can you not love GPSCY? The membership is cheap. The drinks are cheap. The bartenders know what they're doing. They have a sweet back porch. The karaoke is only sometimes bad but always entertaining. Going here at least once should be a requirement to finish any dissertation or professional degree at Yale. read more
