That said, I watched two of my best friends get married at this church last Saturday and it wasn't... half... bad[1]. Being in the wedding party helped combat any soporific feelings, but I gotta say: for an edifice constructed to remind me about my failings as a human being, I mostly enjoyed my time there. It's easy to miss this spot on Plains Road East; there are two entrances if you speed by one. The westmost driveway leads to the larger parking lot which is information our limo driver probably craved. The smaller parking lot probably has room for five cars at most nad our driver had to undertake a twenty-seven point turn to reorient an absurdly long stretch Ford Expedition. It was impressive. I'm not sure what size churches are supposed to be, but this one struck me as fairly modest. Almost immediately upon entering you are in the vestibule and bapistry, where a glass partition divides you from the congregation. The church itself has about 10-12 rows of pews divided by an aisle so I would estimate it seats about 160-200. The architecture was quite modern, with an asymmetrical placement of a cross above the altar (DARING) and an interesting wooden sculpture depicting either the Holy Spirit, or weakass Marvel superhero Ghost Rider's flaming head. (You heard me nerds. Ghost Rider sucks.) The wedding was officiated by Father Trzupek who strongly resembled the current pope Ratzinger. He had a hint of a mitteleuropäische accent, though I suspect/guarantee he was actually Polish. Either way, he ran a tight ship and kept the ceremony light and breezy. The whole thing clocked in under an hour from soup to nuts. From my previous experiences with the C-church, this is like Mach 2. Or should I say Mark 2:20[2]? Ha! I kill me. (Though this is officially proscibed by the church.) An amazing ceremony, and congratulations to my dear friends Geoff and Christine. I hope never to return here. Obligatory Title Pun: Nice APSE! [3] Menu Readability: All they have on offer is the body of Christ, and I'm not allowed to eat it. Need to mention: An extra star for the married couple. I'd hesitate to say "I'm a fan." Much talk had been made within my circles about St. Elias and I'm glad I finally had to the chance to go on a Sunday morning. My first impression arriving well in advance of their Divine Liturgy was simply heavenly. A fairly young schola was chanting the hours while beams of light, accentuated by incense smoke, shot through one of the oculuses illuminating an open bare room lined with candles and icons. As people arrived for DL the room that once felt holy for its serenity exploded into one that was full of holy joy. The entire congregation sang in harmony in both Ukrainian and English with great enthusiasm for 2 straight hours that you don't realize passed by. I was an obvious outsider but felt very warmly welcomed and received. My advice to anyone with the curiosity to do so is to simply show up and just absorb the serene and happy atmosphere before worrying too much about the particulars of what's happening. The rhythm eventually sinks in and you'll keep the memory with you as you leave.
