this guy really care! one of my violin had a cosmetic blemish after something fell on it. i took it…read moreto another luthier and the best they can do is repair about 70 percent of it. i felt the repair could've been better so i took it to lukas, not only did he charge less but he did a better job than the other luthier, he is extremely diligent in his work, reasons being he finish the repair in 1 week, but noticed sublet imperfection left by the previous luthier, instead of passing it off to me as the best he could do, he instead called me and said he needs another week to sand down the varnish and do it again. what a guy! most luthiers would only spend certain amount of time based on how much they were paid. but lukas breaks that traditional notion. you know you got a fantastic luthier when he cares more about customer relationship than just pure profit and proficient in what he does. out of all the nyc luthiers i been to, lukas offers the best quality service, he also carries a good variety of european and chinese violins that i got to try out while waiting in the shop, if you do plan on visiting his shop, i suggest making an appointment rather then show up unannounced, as his shop does get busy, both time i went it was a full house, and i can see why!

My first encounter with this shop was a total accident. I needed a new set of viola strings and did a GPS search for the nearest violin shop to my home. The GPS came up with Gregory Singer's shop, so I called and he told me to come on up. When I got there I got the strings, and Gregory asks me if I'm any good at viola. I tell him I'm decent, and the next thing I know I'm playing for him on one of his fiddles. Apparently I was sufficiently proficient, because the next thing I know he's inviting me to come by the following evening to read Schubert Octet with him and his friends. He comped me the strings. Since then he's done a terrific bow re-hair for me (also comped) read chamber with me a couple other times, and had me play in his orchestra for a 9/11 concert of Dvorak 9. He also hired a friend of mine to sing opera on a tour of China this winter. Tomorrow I plan to go in to try out his violas (mine was just stolen by a NYC cab driver. @$$H0L3.) and will be more than happy to make that rather large purchase from his wide selection if I find something good. Obviously, I had an unusual experience with this shop, but I consider this connection to be one of the luckiest I've made in years, so stop by with confidence, and hey, you never know!

It was actually an impulse to get a new violin since I haven't been playing for around 10 years, and to be honest, I was only thinking to buy one and wanted only to try out. Gregory was very kind and patient with me, he let me try this very nice 3/4 violin (I have small hands) which I very soon fell in love with. This violin totally went beyond my budget and I didn't have that much cash with me. But then he offered me to just take the violin home and then come back later to pay him. How nice he was!!!!!! Actually 2 other amazing things happening in his store that I thought it was one of the best and warmest things I've ever encountered in NYC. It's so not like something that would happen in NYC at all!! But for the sake of his business, I probably shouldn't say much more about this - he's just soooo kind that he's not really running a business here, more like a place to help people who likes music! Anyway, when I get a chance, I'd love to visit the store again. But for anyone who wants to experience a warm humane way of getting a violin, this is definitely the place! Jimmy is kind (extremely), fun to work with and he does indeed help me work towards achieving my guitar goals. His rate is reasonable. You can shop around and you will see. If you find less expensive you will be probably getting a half hour which I do not find sufficient no matter how good the teacher is. Finding a guitar teacher that suits you is important. It all depends on what you are looking to acheive Before Jimmy, i worked with three -just a few lessons each. There is a huge difference between teachers and their approach. They ranged from tab to learning just patterns etc. I wanted to learn "real" guitar so that is why I stick with Jimmy. If you want to play pop songs and strum your own tunes fast then Jimmy is overqualified and Im sure he can do that but its not the approach he takes with me. I work with him because I am in it for the long haul. I wanted a teacher that is extremely meticulous and notices every nuance. He is extremely conscientious of everything you are doing while playing. If you dont mind a sarcastic sometimes dry sense of humour you will find him extremely patient. Compared to other teachers it may possibly seem slow going at first but that is because he makes you form the best most proper fundamental habits from the beginning. What it really comes down to the most is you'll get out of it what you put into it. If you want a teacher who takes guitar extremely seriously, can adapt to your personal needs and learning style and is extremely reasonable, patient and reliable then I recommend him highly. If you just want to play tab or toy around I would find a different teacher. Personally, what I've learned from my lessons coincides and intertwines with my life lessons and personal journey. Our 11 year old daughter has taken private guitar lessons with JRose for two years and looks forward to her weekly lessons. Aside from his musical gifts and talents he has an easygoing personality that makes our daughter at ease with him and open for learning as well as criticism.He is patient with her and answers all of her questions about the instrument or the music. He is reliable and has tailored a schedule that met our needs and his rates are competitive. Recommend adding a recital component for students. As her Mom I am pleased with the growth in her ability to read and comprehend music and her overall progress. In my quest to learn how to play the guitar, I have happened across, and taken lessons from a variety guitar teachers. Some would jump right in with chords, and songs, but left out any real music teaching. Often this was fun, but in the long run left me frustrated as there knowledge limited my development. Other times I would respond to an ad or referral, only to find a stoner burnout when I arrived. Perhaps these teachers could play the guitar, but they seldom were able to teach me anything. In 2006, I met, and started taking lessons from Jimmy. He immediately started me from scratch. Working with me on everything from proper hand position, guitar maintenance and tuning, reading music and sight reading. Jimmy has a fantastic ability to read your progress. He will spend the time and help you develop as a guitar player. Always courteous, patient, and encouraging, Jimmy has given me the foundation to develop and grow as a player. Unfortunately, I had to discontinue my lessons because of job/family issues, but I plan on returning to continue my education as soon as possible. Forget the rest... Jimmy is the best! read more

This really is good as it gets. Before finding Jimmy, I was 'learning' from two other people. Both of them had the same approach, sure, tell us which song you want to learn and we'll write out the tabs. Now that's something I could have done off of the internet. I wasn't really learning the instrument, just to play the songs. Then came along: Jimmy! We started from scratch -- how to read music which was a phenomenal experience. Thanks to Jimmy, I was sight reading in no time. Also, we'd mix up the lessons wherein half would be learning to read/play and the other half would be learning songs I wanted to play but this time, without tabs and with the actual music in front of me. He gave me great exercises to hone my sigh-reading, coordination and how to hold a beat. Jimmy is patient, clear and communicative. With him you know your goals, what you will be learning and most importantly, why it matters. While I have since moved on to another city, I have taken away the ability to read music and a far deeper appreciation of the guitar and that's something I will keep for a lifetime. read more

It was just by chance several years ago that I began guitar lessons with Jimmy after searching online and through word of mouth for a guitar instructor. I had somewhat of a background in music, but not a sufficient one and with no knowledge of the guitar. Jimmy was the ideal instructor for what I was looking for; I didn't want to just learn how to play songs, but rather also incorporate theory. He was always very patient and thorough with whatever he taught. His focus in teaching took into consideration my strengths (or lack thereof). I took lessons with Jimmy for close to two years and would have continued, but moved out of NYC. I had been playing limited guitar at that point for almost five years and was frustrated I could not move past a certain point. I am classically trained in violin and part of my frustration was that I knew technically what needed to be done but could not translate that to a different string instrument. Jimmy was able to move me past that frustration and use what I did know musically to help me be a better guitar player. Jimmy has an extraordinary love for music that fuels his lessons. I found Jimmy online and was glad I did. I took guitar lessons from him for about 2 years and had a great experience. He taught me to read music (something I never thought I could do) and gave me step by step instruction on how to play chords and songs. He also taught me some cool finger picking techniques. From the get go he took the time to understand exactly what I wanted to learn (Stevie Wonder and Al Green) and then crafted our music lesson specifically for me.
