TL;DR: Between the mediocre food and dreadful service, Gumbo Shop isn't worth your tourist dollars. Go almost anywhere else. We initially had dinner plans for elsewhere, but plans changed and we had to pivot. How bad could Gumbo Shop be? As it turns out, we could have eaten just about anywhere else in the French Quarter and had better food and better service. The waitress started off nice enough. She rattled off the daily specials, and my dining companions and I immediately perked up when she mentioned a gumbo "flight." We enthusiastically interrupted her with multiple "YES!" responses to make it very clear we wanted it. Apparently that still wasn't enough confirmation, because our drinks arrived, then our appetizer salads, and eventually we had to ask what happened to the gumbo flight. Her response: "Oh, did you want that?" Our table had bread plates and butter, but no bread. We observed that other tables had bread, so we asked, and only then did the waitress bring us bread. However, the bread wasn't worth the wait: just an untoasted po'boy roll with no filling, flavor, or effort. We had all ordered the Complete Creole Dinner fixed-price menu. The two others chose the combination platter with shrimp creole, red beans and rice, and jambalaya, but the plates were plunked down without explanation or description. The shrimp creole was overwhelmingly tomato-heavy, the red beans were fine, and the jambalaya was forgettable. I ordered the crawfish étouffée, which was another one of the fixed-price menu options. The plates themselves arrived piping hot, but the food was only lukewarm, which strongly suggested the dishes had been microwaved before serving. Side dishes were also forgotten until we asked about them when we were nearly finished with our main courses. At this point, the gumbo flight finally appeared. There must be giant vats of gumbo in the kitchen, so there is no excuse for such a long delay to ladle out a few small cups. Again, the waitress didn't identify the gumbos when she plunked them down, and sadly, they weren't worth the wait. The chicken-andouille gumbo tasted overly salty and slightly burnt, while the seafood gumbo had a pungent quality that screamed "not fresh." It's pretty unforgivable for a restaurant called Gumbo Shop to serve such disappointing gumbo. Then came dessert. Two people at the table received bread pudding, but mine never arrived. When I finally flagged down the waitress to ask about it, she told me that I didn't get dessert because I hadn't ordered the fixed-price menu. Gaslight much? I reminded her that the crawfish étouffée was one of the options on the fixed price menu, and only then did the light bulb go on. We all witnessed the waitress writing down our orders, and there was no shortage of wait staff. We counted at least eight people going back and forth that night. How did we end up with this dumpster fire of an experience?

First visit in New Orleans we wanted to make sure we tried some of the local cuisine and what other place to start than the Gumbo Shop. The place is great with options to eat al fresco in the patio or indoors benefiting from the AC. The decor was nostalgic and we were warmly greeted by Lynn, our server. After explaining the daily specials and helping us with some of her recommendations we opted for the daily specials, Red Fish St Peter which came with a crab cake and shrimp in garlic butter white wine sauce with a side of turnip greens. And I opted for the gumbo trio, duck and andouille, seafood okra and chicken with andouille sausage. The food was exceptional, service was good and this place is definitely worthwhile.

Service was outstanding at the Gumbo Shop. Of course I ordered the seafood gumbo. The roux was excellent. Chocolate brown and tasty. I was disappointed with the seafood part of the gumbo. it consisted of tiny shrimp. I expected more from the Gumbo Shop. I remember having gumbo in New Orleans with nice size shrimp, oysters, crawfish and crab legs extending outward with sausage as well. They did not even have file powder either. I could not believe it. The jambalaya was pretty good and the french bread was a nice accompaniment for the gumbo. The Hurricane was tasty but a little small especially by Louisiana standards. They did seat and serve us close to the closing hour which is commendable. I actually love to cook and make better "seafood gumbo" and jambalaya - Paul Prudhomme style.

On my tour list for years, not much can be said other than, excellent. And the people, just want you to have a good time, thank you so much, Chris!!!! The streets are under construction right now, so can be a little harder to find since I was last in the city, but they open and it's good! So much history and I was glad to come here with a guide who knew about he building, art on the walls (a national treasure and all original) and showed us the actual old kitchen with the wood burning hearth that was never put out at the time. Nice! Try all the gumbo, my fav was the seafood and okra. I like that texture and how stewed down it was. Also, the hot sauce, while not hot to my taste, so much flavor! There's gumbo everywhere--but this is must try to compare with the others, and this is a win!

My first time trying Gumbo! I walked in here around opening time in a weekday and snagged a great table in the courtyard. I was excited to try gumbo, so the server offered the sampler which included seafood, chicken and duck gumbos. I also wanted to try the crawfish étouffée, so I ordered a sample of that as well. Quick and kind service brought out my order quickly and I couldn't wait to dig in. I love soup so I knew gumbo would be amazing, and honestly it blew me away. The depths of flavors were incredible. My favorites were the duck gumbo, which was a special this week, and the crawfish étouffée, if I were to just order one dish, I would go back for that crawfish. Each dish was unique and bursting with flavor. I also loved the seafood gumbo, I could taste the fresh seafood broth used in the recipe and I am inspired to recreate it in the future! I recommended this spot to everyone I was traveling with. I love gumbo!

We walked past the gumbo shop a couple times and knew we had to try it. The restaurant was bustling on a Saturday evening. My favorite part about the place is that this is the best place to get a taste of the New Orleans cuisine. They have all the classics and that too in smaller portion options. We got to try a few different things. Service was great, also the drinks looked amazing. It was my first time trying gumbo and shrimp creole. I liked them both. The shrimp Gumbo has strong flavors, comes with some rice mixed in to balance out the flavor. The creole is very tomato based, flavorful but less than the gumbo.

This was the first place we ate at upon arriving to New Orleans - French Quarters. We came the week before the finally Mardi Gras event, but it wasn't as crazy thankfully so we were able to be seated immediately. We got a table for two in the outdoor indoor area. This place like most of Nola was very vintage. The prices were GREAT and portions were even BETTER! The food was solid, but after eating at a ton of other places on French Quarters I'd say this isn't at the top of my list for quality. It's a good start in your food adventures for NOLA. We ordered the "Complete Creole Dinner" it came with one appetizer, Creole Combination Platter entree, and dessert! It was $36.99 for all of the below. I got the: Chicken Andouille Gumbo 11/10 Shrimp creole 7/10 Jambalaya 7/10 Red beans and Rice 7/10 Warm bread pudding with whiskey sauce 5/10 Praline Sundae 8/10 Drink: Strawberry Lemonade icy 8/10 (something hard in my drink towards the end though)

Another stellar experience! It's iconic for a reason. Boudin, ettoufee, and Cajun sampler. Still a hit after all these years!

I stopped in here for a quick snack on a Saturday around 5:00. I'd been doing some day drinking and needed some substance before I headed back to my hotel for a quick nap before heading out on the town that evening. I was seated right away. I ordered a bowl of Chicken Gumbo and an Abita Amber. Everything came out quickly. My gumbo was served piping hot. It was served with bread. I added some hot sauce to. It tasted amazing and hit the spot. It was just what I needed. Service was great! I was in and out of here pretty quickly. I'd definitely return when in New Orleans.

Great New Orleans/French Quarter vibes in this place. Love sitting in the courtyard area. The server we had was one of the best we have ever encountered in New Orleans. She let us taste a few of the sauces to help decide which dishes we were going to order. The food was outstanding! Lots of options for proteins and sauces to match them with, and the ones we had were all delicious!

Went into the gumbo Shop on my last day in NOLA for a light late lunch. Indy light because I was stuffed with beignets still from an earlier cafe du monde visit. This place was packed and there was about a 10 minute wait roughly. Once spots cleared up we were seated at a 2 top by the fireplace. Very very very busy atmosphere today. The staff was friendly and our waiter was top notch and recommended several items that were delicious he said. We settle on a bowl of chicken gumbo each and a beer each. The gumbo arrived hot and fresh and full of delicious flavor and tons of sausage and chicken. And also a decent amount of rice. There was delicious crusty bread that accompanied the gumbo and was great for dunking. The Gumbo shop was a delightful New Orleans gem and epitomized what New Orleans is all about. Old cultural buildings and delicious food. Not to mention a ton of jazz in the Jackson square outside. Gumbo Shop was truly a delightful experience. Cool old time decor and an old time feel. And delicious food as well.

The seafood gumbo here is pretty good. I decided to get the bowl, because I wasn't all that hungry. At the end I was like this is pretty decent, I should have gotten the bowl. I had plenty of shrimp no crab really. Overall gumbo is at 7/10 that being said I would probably visit again.

Upon learning that they were voted to have the "best gumbo" in NOLA, I'm a little bit disappointed with myself for having ordered something else BESIDES gumbo. Yes, I've been told numerous times that their creole combination was worth trying and a must order. But that's not what they were voted best for...so I'll just have to stop by again before I fly back out. I really like the old world vibes here. The patio area looks and feels very European. Inside, I felt ported back to a bygone era and just sitting there lets me experience a part of history. Service was quite friendly and very straightforward. Food and drinks came very quickly (I also did visit at a relatively slow period). As much as the dish was recommended, I really didn't think much of the creole combo. It felt simple for what NOLA is known for. It didn't excite like what would be expected of creole/cajun flavors. If anything, it was leaning towards the boring side. Too bad I had a few others things to get done that day or I would have ordered a few more items to properly gauge their food and flavors. Until next time, thank you and see you again soon!

Best Gumbo and Jambalaya! I don't like spicy food but they have by far the best hot sauce I had. Great dessert and the place is beautiful!

Ask the Community - Gumbo Shop

    Do they take reservations?

    Yes

I'm curious if this place has any jumbalaya options that are NOT pork-based? I'm good with poultry and seafood, but pig-stuff is a no-no. Can go with creole or etouffee' as Plan B, but would love some other options as well (maybe gator-based)?

    Shrimp Po Boy?

Are there any gumbo options for vegetarians? We eat eggs and dairy, just no meat. I am curious about the GUMBO Z'HERBES.

They have many vegetarian options and as a vegetarian who's eaten there it's really really good please see my review

    Can I reservation?

    I don't believe so.

Could they make jambalaya for people who are allergic to shellfish?

Sorry, dishes are what's already on the menu. You will need to let your server know about any food allergies ahead of time for any possible substitutions or suggestions. Or just call the restaurant and ask.

    Is it cash only?

    No, they take credit cards.

    Is there a kids menu?

No there is not a kids menu. They will offer items that kids will eat like butter pasta and it costs the same as an adult entree.

How much do the specials usually cost? Especially crab cakes

$8.99 for my order of crab cakes

    Can we order to go?

Probably but why would you? The place is so New Orleans and worth eating in!!! Slow down and enjoy it!!

How long is typical dinnertime wait?

We arrived around 5:30 and waited 15min for a group of 6.

Is it good? I'm a very picky gumbo eater, and I must not be disappointed

    I hope you were disappointed.

    Is this place expensive?

Not expensive for what you get. You will spend $25 or more...to get something good.

Do they have much of a red wine list?

It's not terrible. Hess Select and Conundrum Reserve Cab's are the best they have. It mirrors the quality of the food.

I've never had crawfish and seeing it was crawfish season we were destined to be here. We built out our own seafood boil, which included, 1lb shrimp head off, 2 soft shell crab clusters, 1lb crawfish, corn, potato, and sausage. Let's just say we left with a pretty big leftovers box We ordered the hot house flavor and do not regret it one bit! Our server was so kind to show us how to peel and eat the crawfish and honestly it was so fun!! I will definitely be back next time in New Orleans!! One quick note I will say that I learned from a local that I wish I knew before this feast (And you should double check with staff if this info is correct). Most seafood boil places in the area when they have headless shrimp it is farmed and brought in from outside retailers where if you get head-on it's from local ships in the area/fresh caught. Apparently they've been struggling and if you want to support New Orleans local fisherman then go for the head-on shrimp. Again double check with staff if their head-on shrimp is local cuz I learned this information after visiting.

We waited approximately 30 minutes before our waiter even came to greet our table, which set a disappointing tone for the entire meal. The food was decent, but nothing particularly memorable or worth going out of the way for. It's possible the long wait and lack of attention from the staff affected the overall experience and my enjoyment of the meal. The restaurant has potential given the nice atmosphere, but the service needs significant improvement. Until then, I can't rate it any higher than 2 stars.
