Came here for dinner alone and tried the lentil daal, naan, mixed grill, okra and some rice and the taste was fairly good. I felt like the spices were kicking in and it was a bit bland. Certainly a good option for the neighborhood but I would recommend they spice things up a bit. read more

Avoid this scam restaurant. I was invited by a friend from work to have lunch in this so called restaurant (i don't wanna say restaurant as this is not, you are not worth to be called restaurant with other ones that are really good). We arrived and we were served by a rude waiter. I was first time in a Nepalese restaurant and asked for help with the menu. We order our food and here we go: I waited 35 minutes to give me the starter, which i didn't know that was or suppose to be a starter. (I asked for dumplings, chips and some sauce.). The chips arrived with the sauce after 55 minutes since i did the order. This is just ridiculous as we were the only customers in the entire so called "restaurant". You can check the images. My friend after 55 minutes still didn't received his meal. The waiter was so rude that he was arguing with us regarding what is a started and how should i know his culture and how is meal done and so on, bla bla bla. SO pointless. Then, came the manager, another waste of time. Then come another guy saying they are sorry, but we must to pay for the meal as we are not in a third country, Nepal ,to not pay for the meal. So we paid as they were wasting our time. Yes, we are in UK were, if you are not satisfied with a service you can not pay due to customer rights. I did not enjoy my dumplings as the waiter was arguing all the time. The menu was full with some sauce on it. The plain plates they brought for the the main food, my chips, were so hot, that i did burn my finger... really ? Plus they were shouting in the back of the restaurant in their own language about it. Rude Anyway, don't go to a scam so called restaurant as you you will lose time and money and in the end you will be hungry like my friend who invited me . Undoubtedly Newbury's premier curry house. Friendly, reasonably priced ( I can't say I noticed the "Gucci" lager other reviewers picked out), and with excellent food - I'd definitely encourage ordering Gurkhali dishes rather than the "indian" staples. read more

Cozy place on the main road in town. Parked around the corner. Promptly greeted and seated. Many vegetarian options. The server brought out the crispy Papadum, this one a little different in taste. It comes with 4 dipping sauces. I liked the sweet one and the diced onion mix. The others not as much. We ordered garlic Naan, white rice. I ordered the fried breaded potato appetizer, it was quite good. For an entree I selected the vegetarian garbanzo bean dish which was supposed to be hot. I did not think it was very spicy at all, but it was tasty anyway. My friend ordered the lamb dumplings for appetizers which he said we quite good and the lamb dish for an entree. His dish was VERY hot. I sampled the sauce and veggies and it was very tasteful and spicy. We drank the Ghurka beer. Service was top notch. read more

Worked in Newbury for a month and was at Gurkha Chef about 1/3 of the time. The food has great taste and the staff is great. My wife and kids also were fans. This place was better than any of the other Indian restaurants we went to. read more

Staff was OK. The food tasted OK. The price was Ok. But with all the available options in Newbury, in my opinion, keep on walkin'. The Gurkha Chef Restaurant is not worth a visit. read more

The kalo dahl and katmandu kurkhura (chicken n aubergine) are always fantastic. They can go a little on the hot side, but lovely welcome. So glad they're in Newbury. read more

Nepalese Food, not Indonesian. Excellent and efficient service. Terrific curry, the lamb was well cooked, not dry, many choices of rice and nan. The restaurant is well kept, clean and efficient. Go there and enjoy. read more

Waited close to half an hour for someone to come and take the order. The restaurant was understandably busy, but there were no apologies offered for keeping us waiting and there were people who came after us that were being waited on. So, there's really no excuse! Since no one even bothered to stop at our table, despite mutiple requests from us to note down our order, we left hungry and disappointed. Whilst visiting friends in Thatcham they took me to the Gurkha Chef. They are frequent diners there and also regularly use the take away service. I live in Norwich,Norfolk and love all Asian food from Japanese through to Indian cuisine. What can I say but Wow! The service was excellent, the food divine, I only wish we had a Gurkha Chef in Norwich! My Husband wasn't able to accompany me to Thatcham so I decided to order a take away and take it back to Norwich with me. He was suitably impressed especially with the Hariyo Kukhura. Yummy!
