With the lights dimmed, and memorial candles ablaze, the church has a truly magical quality. No matter the time of year, it always makes me think of childhood Christmases. The vicar - Bill Moore - is a considered orator and his words are both moving and thought-provoking. What's more, he is entertaining too and takes time to greet each member of the congregation personally! The church has great links with the local community and is especially close to the local primary schools in the area. The church hall is just a few yards away and is used for a variety of community based activities from jumble sales to Zumba!

I think this particular branch of the Sally Army was a bit of a disappointment for me, as they stocked a LOT of clothes, but not a lot else. There was a small array of books, but nothing to pique my interest. If you're after anything for your wardobe - this shop has the most clothes wedged in out of any charity shop I went to in Halesowen!

The original Salvation Army hall was destroyed to make way for the massive Tesco that now looms over the town. This replacement hall was built on Meredith Street and as these places go, it is a pretty smart and well-equipped place of worship. There's a big car park, which is always packed during services. There's also a nice conservatory/café area here they hold craft groups, meet ups and meals for local elderly people. They also have a play area and run moms and toddlers groups.

It is a big church, but simple and elegant, tastefully decorated inside in light blue and cream - which was, conveniently, the colour scheme of the wedding. I have no idea whether this was intentional on the bride's behalf, or just plain co-incidence. I do know that they were an extremely accommodating lot at St. Francis, so who knows? Maybe they re-painted just for her... The wedding party rocked up with their own vicar, musicians, decorations and what have you; all of which were readily welcomed and accommodated by the vicar - Peter Babington - and his staff. According to my (now married) friend, they were great at keeping in touch and making sure everything ran smoothly as well. So, as I said, I can't tell you about Sunday services or other day-to-day church activities, but for a wedding, this place seemed perfect.

It's pretty large inside and offers traditional features which I always adore when walking into a religious building. The colours they've used are colours I'd expect to see in a church. It's effective and presents an image of an important place. When I went there for this wedding I attended, the church looked great in the backdrop of all the wedding pictures. Due to the traditional look of the church from the outside, it worked well in regards to offering a scenery for the wedding party. The church congregation and vicar are very welcoming and it's nice to attend a church where you are not badgered about attending their church. This left me with a positive feeling about the religious establishment that I may visit the place again.

Birmingham Cathedral is an impressive Cathedral in the Snowhill area of Birmingham, it is fairly…read moreclose to the train station on Colmore Row. Also referred to as St Philip's Cathedral, it was built over 15 years starting in 1710 and is also surrounded by some nice gardens where there are benches, although the benches could have been better maintained in terms of appearance (paint, cleanliness etc) I was surprised to hear this is the third smallest cathedral in England - with only Derby and Chelmsford being smaller, but it still carries about that charm and grand structure so it does look good within the city and it's surrounding gardens, with even some information about the Cathedral too. It did suffer bombings during the second world war but was restored its current condition shortly after. A small but stunning church in the city centre of Birmingham, and one of my favourite Cathedrals in the UK despite it being one of the smallest. 4*

Having never visited before, I had no idea what to expect - but I was blown away by the beauty that makes up the Woodbrooke centre. We had two rooms with massive glass windows overlooking rolling hills outside - loads of natural light flooded into the rooms, and set the scene for a very relaxing and creative weekend. We were allowed to wander the grounds for inspiration (as is the Quaker way, I'm told - full of reflection) though we were too busy to see very much of it. We also had food catered for us by the centre, and it was delicious home cooked hearty (and largely vegetarian!) fare. I would DEFINITELY recommend this as a venue to anyone wanting to run any kind of retreat / course / function. It was brilliant. Really relaxing, and beautiful.

The food is super, (plus of course you can book Lunch and Dinner too if you want), they grow some of their own vegetables in the on-site walled garden. They are able to cook for any diet pretty much and can do packed lunches if you ask in time. The staff are lovely too. The bed part of the facilities is fairly basic, but they are good and rooms are warm and inviting. Have always liked it here. They have tea and coffee on tap downstairs in the dinning room and their new garden room is lovely to go and sit in during the winter with its log burner and during the summer you can sit outside.
