Very good fried chicken! It has a little extra spice to it. My mother in law insists we go every time she's in town!

I was excited to give this place a try since I've heard really great things. But going into this with high expectations, my overall experience fell flat. The chicken was good. Fried evenly, seasoned nicely and it had a little kick to it. I enjoyed it. The sides though were a different story. I had the collards and potato salad. Both were seasoned, but not to my liking. Not to say that they were bad, as everyone prepares their sides a little different. But the collards had a hint of sweetness and it just wasn't for me. The potato salad as well was missing a little something, in my opinion. The meal also came with a slice of bread but I didn't use it. Kind of felt like a waste. My order was for pickup so I didn't get the full experience of dining in, but overall I would still say that it's a nice place worth visiting. My husband picked up an order from Gus's yesterday, and when he got home, we realized that nine drumsticks were missing -- a major part of what we paid for. We had the receipt and even took a photo of exactly what we received to document the mistake. I then drove 10 miles back (one way) to the restaurant to get it corrected. Instead of checking the receipt, looking at the photo, or even taking a moment to understand the situation, the manager accused us of lying and refused to replace the missing food. No apology, no attempt to verify the order, nothing. What should have been a simple fix turned into an unnecessarily disrespectful interaction. Mistakes happen, but the way customers are treated afterward matters. Driving 20 miles round‑trip with proof in hand only to be dismissed and blamed is unacceptable. We've enjoyed Gus's before, but after this experience, it's hard to trust that orders will be handled accurately -- or that concerns will be treated with basic respect. read more

Based on all the great reviews, I was really excited to try Gus's Fried Chicken. We ordered sweet tea, three legs, a breast, fried okra, potato salad, and macaroni and cheese. The sweet tea was refreshing, and the fried okra was definitely a highlight -- perfectly crispy and hard to stop eating! The chicken wasn't quite what we expected. It was on the dry side, and we were hoping for a little more flavor in the batter. The potato salad leaned much sweeter than our personal taste -- almost like a dessert version -- which just wasn't for us. While this visit didn't win us over, we're glad we gave it a try. As someone who is from out of state, this is the far best fried chicken. Better than KFC!

3.X stars....uhm...no #+#^ way! This chain has, literally, the best fried chicken of anywhere I've been. You cannot beat the outside fry crisp and taste. The chicken is way moist and juicy. Such a pop in the mouth of flavor this chicken has! And their sides are quite respectable. Far better than they used to be some years back. I've been wanting to try this restaurant for a while and finally had the chance, it's located in Maplewood surrounded by other great eateries but you can certainly tell this one is a fan favorite by the none stop customers, whether picking up call in orders or dine ins. It's not a very big restaurant and dining in was not overcrowded but every table was filled, you go in and we were told to seat ourself and soon after here comes the very friendly waitress, the menus were at the table already and it didn't take long to decide what to order, it's just chicken on the menu and sides. The fried green tomatoes I ordered came to the table piping hot and was delicious I can honestly say the best I've ever had, the chicken sandwich I ordered was delicious and had a spicy kick to it, and the fries come seasoned as well. The restaurant workers had music playing and the music was a great choice of music so much so that I was moving and grooving in my seat. I walk by Gus's all the time but had never stopped in until more recently! It is sooo good and clearly made fresh to order which is ideal at a fried chicken place. The breading on the chicken was seasoned and the chicken was juicy and super hot! I definitely recommend the fried okra (same seasoning as the chicken breading) and all of us enjoyed the Mac n cheese! The food gets 2 stars at best. The catfish is seasoned exactly like the chicken, and it's fried in the same grease. The greens are canned and the mac n cheese was cheese sauce and noodles. The sit down scenery is down home and very nice. There's a cool patio but we didn't use it as it was raining. Service was quick, friendly, attentive, all the boxes checked. They serve beer which is a plus to go with the excellent food. While the menu is simple and brief, the food is 10/10. The Mac n Cheese wasn't as good unfortunately. I've been wanting to try this place for quite some time. I finally got a chance to go in and order some food to go. The service was fast and the woman who took my order was pleasant. I waited for about 10 minutes for my food to be ready. I spent a little over $16 for 3 chicken wings, leg, and a small side of collard greens. That's a bit pricey for my liking. I will say the chicken was good and it had a small quick to it. The greens were alright but I felt they could be seasoned a bit more. The woman at the register suggested I try their potato salad. I love spicy food and this was a good spice level for chicken. For those who are spice sensitive, you should try the chicken tenders because that spice level is 4/10. The sides were nothing special. Order carryout and you have to go through everything carefully before you leave because things are wrong or missing at least half the times we ordered. Went for lunch and waited over 20 minutes before fried green tomatoes came out. About the time we realized how long we had been waiting we saw our server run around looking for someone's credit card she lost. Then we saw her digging in trash cans looking for credit card.
