Good burritos and definitely one of the better Mexican chain restaurants. For this particular store, no complaints and will get nice service with the standard food quality and atmosphere expected of the Guzman y Gomez chain. My lack of the last star is just in comparison to other Mexican franchises: whilst I think they are the best Mexican franchise in Australia, I will say Zambreros delivers on "freshness" better with their selection of salsas and having numerous added on, plus the overall size of the burrito. If Guzzies upped their game here, they'd get 5 stars. But again, still the best franchise and I would consider them better than Zambies, Mad Mex and Taco Bell overall. Guzman y Gomez is probably the most visible take-out place around Canberra Centre. Both times I went here it was rather full, but they get your order done rather quickly. I tried the nacho fries (spicy) and the chicken and brisket tacos (mild). Both items hit the spot. Tacos are a bit messy if you're doing take out, but is there a tex-mex place where that doesn't happen? Decent amount of indoor seating and there's some tables outside next to the park. In my opinion the previous Californian poster has had too much wine or not been in Cali for a long time...or she must have eaten the best Zambreros ever. In my extensive experience from living in Oz for some time now, GYG is WAY better than Zambreros, the latter has actually had to update its flavors in markets that now have a GYG because of the rampant loss of marketshare they were experiencing. Shame on Zambreros for fobbing off Indonesian food in a wrap as "latin" to a country that has a .0001 latino population (so no one to call them out on this tomfoolery)! More proof: GYG actually has latinos working in its franchizes lending legitimacy and some extra awesome diversity and most importantly flavor! Even with the taste makeovers, GYG is still a superior product to Zamboners, especially anything in GYG's spicy style. Both organizations have great social missions, and I'll allow that both are better than pretty much every other Australian fast food option in terms of flavor, portion, and healthiness, but head to head, GYG smokes its too-Asianish imposter. If you're in Canberra and want Asian, go for Papparich (around the corner), or BluGinger (nearby). Anyway, the target of this entry is 'Mericans visitng Australia and looking for an Aussie meal that they won't walk away from feeling 1. disappointed and 2. ripped off. Try the spicy chicken hard tacos (3), which to an American palate are only mildly spicy, and lay on the hottest sauce that GYG has (habanero), get a modelo negra, a side of guac, and close your eyes and be happy, until your next dining experience. Know that for 'Stralia, this is unbelieveably cheap and delicious. The burrito bowls are a nice lower-carb option if that's your thing and if you're not super hungry, order the kids burrito and save some dollar bills (coins). Another bonus: the GYG rewards card actually provides fairly immediate rewards compared to most other rewards programs. For an "even better if" it would be great if they provided made-on-the-spot margaritas "on the rocks" in addition to their blended options. More lime wedges, more beans, more cilantro/coriander and a great pork option and I might just mistake this place for Chipotle, the greatest tex-mex fast food franchise in the world. But again, compared to all other competition, head and shoulders the best. read more

Exceptional burritos, great flavours and texture, the steak chipotle is great! Service is friendly, décor is trendy. I really can't find much fault, the nachos were excellent, I guess the quesadillas were a bit ordinary though. Prices are more than fair. Recommended! read more

After being warned that Mexican food was lacking in the whole country by a chef in Melbourne, I had low expectations. However, they seemed packed every time we walked by so we decided to try it. Nachos and a burrito bowl (~$10) were executed well but the quesadilla was unrecognizable as such. The flavors were strong and a reminder of non-exceptional but reliable chains much closer to Mexico. Imported Jarritos sodas ($4) were available which is always a plus. The major demerit aganst the place is the poor choice of Tobasco hot sauces, although at least the habanero-based one tasted like something besides, well, Tobasco. The crowd, large enough to make finding seating difficult on a mid-week evening, turned out to be wise. Not fine dining but it in no way pretends to be. For cheap-ish by local standards Mexican, I'd definitely return to Guzman's. read more

Wow, I love this place. I'm a Texas guy, raised on the border with Mexico, so I know my Tex-Mex. This place has their Tex-Mex down. Had their chicken street tacos and a side of chips and guac, and it was awesome. Salsas were great, too, and you could go from mild all the way up to habanero. Seriously, I'd pass on many, many, many places on the Texas-Mexican border and go to this place in freakin' Australia instead. read more

First time visiting GYG since I got back from San Francisco, where there is a taqueria selling burritos and tacos at every corner. It was great to taste the real flavours of a real barramundi burrito. I love that they make it fresh on the spot with the cooked ingredients hot to order with the added avocado costing an extra $3? This is during the time they introduced hot chips into the menu. They are battered and have spices added to their skin. It's not bad, more on the healthy side as u can tell they're real potatoes. I love the variety and abundant sources of onion, jalapeños, Tabasco sauces and coriander (cilantro) at the self serve desk. The service is also extremely good. They actually bring the order to ur table and they're super nice. Thanks GYG!! read more

This was probably the worst Mexican I've ever had. We had burrito bowls. The rice came in gluggy clumps with hard uncooked bits at the same time, the tinned black beans plonked on top did not help. Not enough salsa or sour cream to help either. The chicken and the beef were tasty but the overall experience was just awful. So disappointing and not cheap. read more
