This friendly spot has become my go-to for my mani-pedi: worth paying a bit more to spend time in a relaxing space that's casually stylish and yet laid-back, with the nicest staff who always do a great job. I'm still a traditional polish gal (no gel or dip for me), but they do it all here! I usually bring my own polish, but they also have great in-house options including standbys like OPI as well as a niche brand or two, including the quick-drying vegan brand Dazzle Dry (a $10 add-on, but this stuff really does last). You'll never feel rushed here; when you arrive you'll be asked if you'd like a coffee, tea, or glass of bubbly. Every aesthetician here I've worked with has done an amazingly thorough clean-up job along with exfoliating and massage, and in particular everyone does an amazing job with my nail tips to the extent that I usually get a week's wear on my nails, which I keep pretty short and bang around on the regular. Practicalities: you'll want to make an appointment--they do book up, and chancing it on a walk-in might not be an option. And parking on the street and in the lot across the street is metered and it's close enough to the Port to be monitored, so don't skip paying up. read more

I went by the excellent reviews but I was disappointed in this place. I am from another state and travel a lot so I have had many manicures all over the Country. I have not had a place use pre-used Emory boards on me since the late 80's/early 90's...and the metal tools for cuticle care were in some colored liquid I am guessing was a "sanitizer" but it looked as though it had not been changed in a long time, with stuff floating in it. All the tools were rusted. I was praying I would not get an infection. I probably should have just left but I did not drive myself and it was very cold to be waiting outside. As for the service itself, she did not talk a lot which is fine with me, I prefer it to small talk. She was a perfectionist with clipping, filing, cuticle cleaning and polishing and did great at all that. I paid for the extra extended massage, I did not notice anything special or extended, or barely a massage at all. I picked this place because of the reviews and they have dazzle dry polish. Hopefully I can find another place that uses that polish that I can get into (found others but had no availability) that is cleaner. I will ask the next place if it is one use tools and how they are cleaned-I thought it was a law to autoclave tools and not re-use files but maybe it varies state to state? read more

So - way long ago - I lived in Florida and I wasn't happy. While living there, I discovered getting my "nails done". And - it was something that made me happy. As I've gotten older and have more disposable income, this has still remained one of my favorite self care activities. Today, I discovered H&E Paint Bar and am so glad I did. I will no longer nail salon hop - this is where I will go! I made an appointment the day before - turns out I was lucky to get in on such short notice! So - make your appointments in advance! Zoe was my nail tech and she was great! Energetic, kind, funny - and very good at what she does! The salon itself was clean, comfortable and didn't have that production line feel that most salons do. I got to relax, read, enjoy complimentary mimosas. And, I left with very happy toes! Can't wait to return! I already booked my next appointment where I will be trying some fancy quick dry policy on my nails that apparently lasts like gel but doesn't do the damage and doesn't require the special lights (which age your skin). read more

UPDATE - I spoke with the owner of this location and she was very helpful. Although I did have to call multiple times, I appreciated that she sent me a gift card and she even had me stay on the phone with her while she emailed it to me. I do feel taken care of so I have changed my rating to five stars. I have mixed feelings about this nail salon. On the one hand, it is very pretty and seems well run. They have a wide selection of different nail options, and I felt as though the staff was pretty friendly overall. For example, I was offered tea or a glass of wine during my service. On the other hand, my nails chipped within days of receiving a dazzle dry French manicure. I paid $50 plus a $10 tip and have been walking around with nails that do not look very nice. I had to hunt down the owner of the establishment, both with follow up phone calls and some emails. After trying different attempts, I was able to connect with her and I was told that I could either receive a correction to the nails or a gift card. Since I live near Boston, I opted for the gift card. I mentioned numerous times that I preferred a refund but I was told they do not do that. If you're local to the area, I'd consider this place but be aware that you might need to go back for nail repair work and make several phone calls to do so. read more

Service quality and availability of quality polish brands and color range are good. The place feels tacky and not exactly sparkling clean, however. Workers seem shabbily dressed and unprofessional and the music is often loud hip hop that, at least to me, is not conducive to a relaxing, spa-like experience. Location is great, and the salon could be quite a lot nicer with decluttering, fewer paper signs, removal of empty drink cups and other trash behind the technicians. I'm thinking salon personnel ought not drink or eat adjacent to their station. It seems less than hygienic and too informal to me. read more

went there today and loved everything from the space to the ambiance! What a lovely place! I made my reservation ahead for deluxe manicure& pedicure, came there on time, was greeted and got attention right away. Jess was my nail professional, I loved her service! While being inside I was happy to dividers for customers, one time use utensils which were opened for me, all the cleaning procedures between new customers. Bathroom was super clean and had contactless soap. There were 4 customers max at the place, everyone was far away from each other, the atmosphere was lovely as staff members were sharing some funny stories and great mood. I will be back! read more

I should have reviewed this months ago but time got the better of me. Anyhow, I called in for pedis for my mothers birthday - April 15th so just before mothers day. The colors you could choose from were wonderful and they gave absolutely divine service. We were offered mimosas and water if we wanted them. My nail polish also lasted for a little over a month which is spectacular to say the least. I didn't take any photographs since ... well, my feet aren't my best feature and I never remember to. My sister, my mom and I have been going to H&E basically since it opened. The salons are both beautiful and they make you feel so welcomed there. They don't rush the services and really take their time to perfect whatever you are having done. The atmosphere is relaxing and they offer several different drinks, there is something for everyone. We prefer to go to the middle street location and we REALLY like when we have Josh as one of our techs. read more

This is the place to get your mani pedi in Portland. It is a boutique style nail salon, all products are high end and the nail techs are professional, friendly and talented. I think I have had every nail tech from both locations, in my many years of going here. My best friend and I come every two weeks for our nail "date" and we LOVE, Josh and Zoe!! They are our favorites, but I assure you all the nail techs here are amazing. I really appreciate that this nail salon does not smell like acetone when you walk in and they do not use a drill on your nails, ever! Before this place, I assumed that the drill was the only way to remove the dip or gel. My nails are the healthiest and longest that they have ever been! I went to H&E Paint Bar for a pedicure last week and truly had a 5-star experience. First of all, the space is beautiful. Tons of light, really modern and chic, with comfy chairs to hang out in while you get pampered and a good selection of polish. I had my pedicure with Zoe and she was fantastic. But even better, so were the other women who were there. I loved that they all seemed more than happy to help each other out if someone was free and someone else's client needed something. That sort of vibe between the staff does wonders for the overall energy of the place and the ability to relax. I highly recommend Zoe for everything. She's fun, talented, gives a great foot massage, and makes a killer mimosa. When I get a pedicure, the least important thing to me is the polish. I'm mostly coming in to have my feet and legs pampered, so the foot scrubs and the massages can make or break my experience. Zoe was great with everything. I also got regular polish, not gel, and the pedicure is still perfectly in tact with no chips or smudges. The entire experience was so fun and relaxing that I can't wait to go back. And yes, I am aware that the mimosa in my hand did help my view. But I swear it would have been good either way. read more

By far the best nail salon in town I have been going to these ladies for almost a year, and they have never done me wrong. They have some truly talented nail artists with the best personalities. I always feel so comfortable, and able to be my goofy self when conversing with them. They're all incredibly open minded and more than capable making your nail dreams come to life. My favorite style is the 'Cat's Eye' affect I've had it done numerous times and it's always a show stopper. I love the fact they use Gel X extensions opposed to acrylics, I've had them on a couple times now and my nail underneath still feels strong and healthy. The gel polish lasts for over a MONTH, so it is definitely worth the money getting your nails done here. I only do my nails once a month so this factor is perfect for me. I'm from New York and everything is NY is more expensive, except for nails. $25 for a manicure, $60 for a mani/pedi, that's outrageous!! People actually pay these prices? They did nothing different from my place at home. I pay $30 for a mani/pedi $10 for a manicure alone. With all that said, it is a very nice place. It was peaceful & seemed clean. I went closer to closing time and it was quiet. I didn't get the girls name who did my nails but she did a nice job. She had pretty tattoos to look at as well. There was a man doing nails which I find very odd but maybe that's normal here in Maine. If I'm ever desperate maybe I'll go back but there has to be places in the area that are more affordable. I go here because I followed Tory over from Studio One and she's fantastic (5 stars to her)! Easy to talk to and I am just happy to support her. The three star rating is more about the location because it's inconsistent on how comfortable I feel there. Some days it's great! Just depends! Tory usually makes me feel welcome, it's hard to get a reading on everyone else and sometimes I feel awkward there, but it usually passes and I'm fine. Josh is also really nice and chatty! Yesterday I went with family and it just felt a bit awkward at times or too quiet haha, but it ended up being fine and Josh and Jess treated my family great. I was bummed that my sister forced herself to come so I wouldn't have to pay 50% or 100% of the service if she couldn't come because I found out under 24 hours that she really wasn't feeling better (she has a chronic illness and was going through a flare up). I respect their business and understand why they have that rule in place but wish there were exceptions for real emergencies. Or repeat customers having a free pass available once a year? Things happen unfortunately. Lastly, it was such a small thing at the end: when I was paying, the credit card reader did a loud beep that surprised me (I had forgotten it was loud there) and I laughed and was like, "wow that was loud!" And the girl (who I didn't recognize from previous visits, maybe new?) behind the desk replies very flatly with "well thats the sound it makes." And maybe she didnt mean to say it that way, but it just turned the nice experience with my family a bit sour because it was right before I left and now all I could think about was how rude she sounded. I don't have a lot of money, but I like to treat myself when I can and here I had just paid $180 for my family and I and the experience just fell flat. Please be kind and welcoming to all your customers. I get teased that I pay too much to go here but I go as often as I can afford it and because I know how much work Tory puts into what she does so I don't mind paying a little more than other places. TL/DR: There is a strong possibility you will get a fungal infection at H&E Paint Bar, and then the owners will refuse to reimburse you for your medical expenses unless you undergo a painful and unnecessary biopsy. I want to start by saying that I do not like leaving negative reviews. I know people's livelihoods are at stake, and I also know that everyone makes mistakes. But H&E Paint Bar has been very unreasonable with me and in an effort to prevent anyone else from having a similar experience, I will be sharing my story. I was visiting Portland on September 17. With a few hours to kill before dinner, a pedicure sounded really nice after walking around all day. I hadn't had a pedicure in about a year so this was a really special treat for me. I checked Yelp for nearby places, and after reading the reviews for H&E Paint Bar's Middle St location, I called and was able to get an appointment. Josh was great and I left feeling refreshed! Fast forward a month and I noticed a bright white line on one of my toenails (I do not wear polish). After looking online for possible causes, I went to see my doctor who confirmed it was a fungal infection. The treatment consists of me taking a pill daily for 90 days. I also had to get my blood drawn which is one of my least favorite things to do (I have fainted before during blood draws), but my liver levels had to be stable enough to take the medication. I emailed H&E Paint Bar and asked for a supervisor to call me. Clarissa called me back quickly and was very sympathetic and apologetic. She explained that they have a strict policy of not offering refunds but they would give me a complimentary pedicure. Um, what? Not only would I never go back there, but I don't live in Portland. I told her they needed to make an exception, and she said she would have to speak with the owners. I explained that I didn't want my tip back, just the money I paid for the pedicure, as well as my out-of-pocket expenses for treatment. She called me back later to let me know that I would be receiving a refund and that she would email me regarding my medical expenses. I received this email later that day, also from Clarissa: "Our Technicians carry insurance for the services that they provide, and in order to fulfill compensation for medical care provided, we will need official documentation from your doctor showing proof of when your infection was contracted and any specifics that they are able to provide on your case for us to be able to asses and pass the information to Josh." I contacted my doctor who told me they only way they could determine the approximate date of the infection would be to do a biopsy and even that would not be definitive. I relayed that information to Clarissa via email, along with an itemization of my out-of-pocket expenses, which totaled $96.63. Seven days later I received this response from Clarissa: "Again, due to there being no circumstantial evidence or a doctor's note to prove, we continue to stand by the cleanliness and standards performed at our locations and do not take responsibility for your medical inconveniences." So, there ya go! H&E Paint Bar would rather me undergo a biopsy which may or may not yield the information they say they need, instead of cutting me a check for less than $100. That is an appalling business model, and I feel badly for its employees who have to work for people with these "standards." And of course - a heads up that you may or may not get a fungal infection if you go to H&E Paint Bar, and if you do, you are stuck with the bill and the medical "inconveniences." Cheers! read more

Anna Philips Nail Bar is stylish and the staff are friendly. I'd love to give Anna Philips more than 2 stars. However, I've been twice and both times were very disappointing. The first time, in July, I had a Premium Manicure ($35+tip) and within 24 hours the manicure was peeling/popping off my nails!! I have never experienced this in years of getting manicures elsewhere. I emailed the staff about it and they were baffled but helpful. In the end, I figured it was a fluke. The second time I went to Anna Philips, I had a Signature Manicure ($25+tip) and my thumb nails bubbled almost immediately after leaving the salon. My mother also went with me that day and her manicure polish peeled/popped off within a few days. Absurd! I usually go to another nail salon where manicures are $13, are GREAT, and the regular varnish lasts at least a week. I will not be returning to Anna Philips Nail Bar. read more

I really wanted to give this place five stars as it's absolutely beautiful and extremely clean. I originally booked a 35 minute pedicure and ask them to upgrade to the 45 minute. When my service was done I realized she had been giving me a pedicure for 35 minutes. And I went to pay and they charge me for the spa pedicure and I told them I only had 35 minutes done. The nail technician then said she did my 45 minute service in 35 minutes.... huh?!?!?! The polish started peeling up within a few days and the paint job was sloppy. When I checked out, I tried to use a gift certificate and the woman couldn't figure out how to enter it as payment in the register in and told me I would have to use it another time!? I don't think I'll be using it another time... my first experience was lackluster. read more

I really, REALLY, wanted to give this place five+ starts, but I just can't. Believe me, it's just as disappointing to me as it was after we left. Let me start by saying that the salon is STUNNING. The calming, gray walls, beautiful chandelier and stellar customer service. The women are extremely welcoming and THOSE BIG, WHITE CHAIRS ARE AMAZING. I know Portland is on the up and up, but we're not NYC juuuuuuuust yet. I was generously treated by my friend to a combo mani/pedi for my birthday. I believe it was $75 or $80 for each of us which brings us to a total of 150+ 40 in tips ----yikes. I love my feet, but c'mooooon. My manicure bubbled while drying and my pedicure was sub-par. You could see my nail through my polish within the first week. Not to say I won't try it again, but I really, reaaaalllyyy hope they make it worth it next time. GO HERE. They are absolutely wonderful! The salon is gorgeous, new, sanitary--everything you would want. The manicurists are lovely and stylish, and conversation was interesting and fun. And they offer you free wine, champagne, or mimosa with your manicure (or whatever else). I showed up 45 minutes before they closed with no appointment and a suitcase in tow. They were welcoming and accommodating wayyyyy beyond the necessary--my ride didn't show up until almost an hour after they closed, and they happily let me sit, read their magazines, and drink champagne until my friends showed up to get me. So we headed to another salon which was also booked up for the afternoon. One of the women there recommended Ana Philips Nail Bar and it was the best recommendation ever! They were able to do all of our manis & pedis right away. Super comfy arm chairs during the pedis. They also gave us complimentary wine! Can't beat that!
