Always great bagels. I miss the old stores where they made the bagels throughout the day but the retails stores are good too

I always crave bagels when I come to New York and these hit the spot. Their coffee was delicious and kept us warm on the cold day. Their guys behind the counter helped us choose what we wanted and were very helpful. We were able to sit inside and get a break from the cold weather. The bagels were so soft and fluffy, I loved them! I will have to add them to my list of go to's when in NYC. read more

This was my first time here and the food and service did not disappoint. The combination of the scallion cream cheese, onion and cucumbers was perfect. I love the crunch. This will definitely be a new breakfast spot for me, I would recommend for a hearty breakfast on the go. read more

It's an okay bagel shop. Nice interior with tables for dining in. Staff was friendly. I ordered an egg and cheese on an everything bagel and vegetable cream cheese on an onion bagel. I didn't like that the vegetable cream cheese had scallions in it; I ordered vegetable to avoid scallions. Everything was well made but they're definitely not the best bagels. I ordered H&H bagels through Grubhub and found their online menu to be very restrictive. No option for toasting, no option to put schemear on the side. I ordered an egg and cheese to which avocado was added unprompted. Possibly because another in my party ordered one with avocado. I did enjoy the sandwich but didn't feel it was anything to write home about. I regret not going to PopUp bagels. Sorry H&H. read more

My previous experience with H&H was in a train station and the bagels there were less than fresh. I knew I had to go for the real deal this time. This location wasn't crowded and service went pretty fast. They have a variety of egg breakfast sandwiches as well as flavored cream cheese options. I went for the lox cream cheese and decided to add capers last minute. Great call. This will be my go to. Coffee is bearable but not extraordinary. With so many great cafes in the city you're probably better off grabbing your java somewhere else. I still dream about this bagel combo, and can't wait until next time in the city so I can enjoy it again. read more

I know H&H is supposed to be the "gold standard" of NYC bagels. But I have to say I'm just underwhelmed by them. You'll have to realize that I'm from NJ, and I have a pretty high standard for bagels. And I've found maybe two places that meet those standards on this fair island. So I will freely admit that I'm probably a tough judge, also: weird (lol). But whenever I visit here, it's out of convenience, and I wished I had gone someplace else. I guess you can't really go wrong with your bagels with cream cheese. Yes, I'm big on quality and their bagels are a MUST!!! Wait. Their Pumpkernickel/Pumpernickel Everything Bagel is an artform. I bear through their long lines and wait times solely for this bagel, in many configurations. The reason for the tantrum being that you will have to wait for your order. They get quite busy and ordering in advance/online doesn't necessarily speed the process along. But good problems to have when the product is so good during this crazy pandemic. So anyhow, go in person. Check the menu while you wait on the line. Grab your cold beverage as you proceed to wait in the line. Order your coffee +1 and pay at the counter and then wait until they call your name. Eat in or go, at this point in the "recovery stage." H & H Bagels on the West Side is just as nuts as the East Side location. I used to live nearby on the West Side and when I visit my old neighborhood I still stop in. I have to be patient waiting in line. You better know what you want, order and move on quickly. Since Covid I grab and go. I'm usually there during the week so I don't deal with weekend lines out the door. I really do love the taste of the bagels and they don't skimp on the cream cheese. They are the only place I've ever known to make a Pumpernickel Everything Bagel. It's my favorite. Service isn't typically with a smile but I'm used to that at H&H. Just remember it's popular so if you have a time limit either give yourself plenty of time or go elsewhere. read more

This west side sattlite location is trash. All the workers are great. It's just the food or the main item/reason you go, for the bagels. Because they don't bake the bagles there don't waste your time here. Granted the are (hopefully) baked that day, however they will never be "fresh out the oven" good. I picked up some everything bagels from here, and they were delicious! I didn't want them toasted, but they were still warm by the time I got home. The bagels have just the right crunch on the outside, and I love that the everything toppings and seasonings cover both sides of the bagel. Now I understand why Ted was reluctant to move to Chicago for H&H bagels. Any time I get a bagel from here, it always satisfies my cravings - overall taste is a 10/10. Fluffiness: 6/10 - this is really where H&H loses most of its points (I personally love a fat, doughy bagel). You can see from the picture that this really isn't their strong point, but although the bagel isn't that fat, the dough and overall taste is on point. Im so surprised with this current help rating! H and H had always have the one of the best bagels in the neighborhood and always a favorite since I moved around the area. They recently renovated (early 2022) and yes it looks a lot better but also the service has tremendously improved. I wanted a sausage egg and cheese and I always want the yolk to be super runny and so I asked for it to be made that way. Above and beyond with accommodating the request and They even offered to make it an open sandwich which made the whole runny yolk experience even more lovely. I have been to this location twice now. The first time was quiet and fast. Most recent time was super busy and slow and one part of the five sandwich order was wrong. That said, this place can be busy for a good reason. Soft, warm, chewy fresh bagels. Their whole wheat everythings are loaded with the seeds I love. Good deli turkey for that type of sandwich bagel. I am a bacon, egg, cheddar girl. They don't add quite enough cheddar but still good. My favorite bagel sandwich shop is Sunrise bagels in Montclair, NJ. They for me are the gold standard for a gigantic sandwich bagel. I often have to save half. At H and H, I can eat a whole sandwich bagel for there is simply less inner stuff. A good sandwich however. The knishes here look awesome at H and H. Must try one next time. They have more cream cheese mixed-in options compared to other shops. Must try some of those, too. read more

Like every other bagel in NYC, there's some variance, here, depending on the atmospheric conditions of the day and many other variables of which I'm sure I lack awareness. Over many visits and many years we've noticed: - The bagels have, at least in the past five years or so, been too sweet and malty for us. At some point in the past, I don't remember these as being so sweet, but it's possible my tastes have changed. (e.g. I used to eat frosting out of a container in college!) - On most visits, bagels are super fluffy -- overrisen to our tastes -- and underbaked. - Interestingly, we've had great luck getting bagels here on cooler, rainy days, when the bagels have just the right density and chewiness. On a recent, rainy weekend morning, we picked up a positively delightful batch of bagels at H&H, chewy and substantial -- a batch that made me rethink all my assumptions about the establishment and wonder if I'd been unfairly maligning them for years. They were fresh and had just the right density, we thought, though we still found them to be too sweet, with a wimpier crust than we prefer. They are (like Bagel Bob's and maybe Ess-a-Bagel) probably baked with re-toasting in mind. We did (for us) the unthinkable and toasted them at home a few hours later, and enjoyed them very much. We have to repeat this rainy, cool day experiment. We've learned to make croissant and macarons purchases based on weather conditions; it makes sense that we would treat meteorologically sensitive bagels in the same manner. (Note to support the theory: Several days later on a warmer, dry day, Ess-a-Bagels -- which we often call out as top notch NYC bagels in our view -- were unpleasantly fluffy and overrisen, badly needed more baking.) A possible hypothesis going forward: - Tal and Broad Nosh seem to be good almost anytime early in the day for a consistently dense/chewy texture, and crisp/chewy crust; - H&H and Ess-a-Bagel seem better suited for cool and/or wet days that are less conducive to overrising, especially if we'll be filling the former with something sweet or something complementary to sweet. I have had better bagels at the airport and not even a NY airport. I tried an everything and a plain. These were mass produced bagels, I don't know if they were hand rolled but they didn't seem to be. NY bagels have a certain crunch and airiness to them. These were all one texture bready. A true NY bagel should have a small hole with almost no gap. These had giant holes and they were not giant bagels. I really felt like these were chain bagels from a chain bagel store. The plain had an odd sweetness too. Stay away and go to a real bagel store. read more

I found the bagels extremely disappointing. I couldn't figure out why, since I used to buy bagels at the old H&H when it was on Broadway near Zabar's. The bagels were dry and thin and absolutely unappealing. I finally went to Absolut bagels on Broadway between 106th and 107th Sts. and was absolutely delighted. There's no comparison. The bagels at Absolut are much lighter and fluffier (if you can consider a bagel fluffy) and has an interior consistency very similar to sourdough. Easy way to grab a bagel to eat in the morning but the lines are long and the customers themselves are consistently rude to the staff. Otherwise the staff are sweet and fast with the orders.
