Then, my California state return was completely loused up. The return was filed with California and I was supposed to get an approximate $1700 refund. Unfortunately, California notified me that I actually owed them $1445. When I reached out to the preparer, she was very slow to get back to me, then claimed that California was correct, and that H & R Block had a programming issue that miscalculated my return. She said she would file a claim on my behalf to compensate me, but would not provide a copy of the claim when I requested it. When I called the corporate office, they were not aware of any programming issue. Mind you, when I had my return prepared in March, if there was truly a programming issue, thousands of Californians would have been affected. They also said that no claim had been filed for me. Based on getting a refund, I spent over $1,000 on landscaping material to fix up my yard. So, not only did I spend the money I was assured I was getting back, but I also owed money. I'm on a fixed income and the money I pull from my IRA is for daily survival expenses and never would have been used for landscaping. The mistake made on my taxes really put me in a financial bind and H & R Block doesn't care. Oh, they refunded me $75 for the cost of the state return. Big whoop.
