This review is for a virtual service experience, tax preparer out of Thomasville, AL, Karen Barkley I truly cannot say enough great things about my virtual experience with H&R Block, and especially about Karen Barkley. With a busy schedule, I rely on virtual services whenever I can. I will admit, I was initially unsure how I felt about handling something as important as taxes, virtually. That hesitation disappeared immediately after this weekend. Overall my H&R Block experience has exceeded every expectation I had. I worked with Karen Barkley for both my 2023 and 2025 filings, and she has been nothing short of exceptional. In 2024, I was in the middle of relocating between states and decided to return to a prior in person tax professional in San Diego. I thought it would be the safest option before moving to Wisconsin. Unfortunately, I was advised not to file for 2024. Fast forward to 2026, after a seamless 2025 filing with H&R Block, my 2024 taxes suddenly became a serious issue while I was applying to schools and working through FAFSA. One of the biggest decisions of my life in my mid 30s felt like it was at risk, at least in the moment. I was completely overwhelmed, honestly panicking, and in tears. I reached out to Karen with no idea what to do, just hoping for some kind of direction. Karen responded quickly over the weekend, from Friday afternoon into Saturday night. Not one message (out of many) went ignored. Completely virtual, Karen stepped in and took control of the situation in the most calm, confident, and supportive way. She walked me through everything step by step, gave clear and practical solutions, and never once made me feel like I was asking too much. Even when my 2024 W-2 felt impossible to get, she had answers, options, and a plan. I have been working since I was 15 and have never had a tax issue before, so this completely threw me off. Had taxes done on January 10th and my efile was kicked back due to my "tax expert" spelling my youngest sons last name wrong and even with giving all my documents needed to see names and spelling. Had to do my own detective work to find anything out and not one "expert" could tell me why it's taking so long. The kick back then triggered my state return to then instead of direct deposit as I set up and double checked to make sure numbers matched was then sent a check and here it is a week after the state says it's been issued my money and still not here and now I wonder with the federal even with it being separate entities will it affect it also??? I have been using H&R Block online tax service for nine years. However, since I got married and have been filing jointly, we have been hit with a "failure to pay estimated tax penalty" two years in a row. After the first year, I paid estimated taxes each quarter for an estimated freelance income of $4000. I came to less than $1500. Nonetheless, when I called H&R Block to find out why this happened, I discovered that their customer service representatives HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF TAX PREPARATION. That's right. Despite their "100% accuracy guarantee," which isn't worth the bandwitdh its's generated by, they only guarantee that they've ESTIMATED your taxes correctly--based on what you've given them. After last year, my husband and I were extremely diligent and reported every single income and tax form we received. We did not miss anything. We checked, double-checked, and triple-checked. Lulled into satisfaction by the supposed accuracy guarantee, we filed and paid. When received the penalty bill again, I called customer service only to discover I would have to PAY for a tax pro to explain why we were billed - none of them were tax pros. So disgusted. I have never felt so discussed with this adviser named Pattidean Wohlford at the Palm Springs office on 1751 N. Sunrise way. I had several questions as I am opening another small business. Rude -- Did not give complete answers -- Just kept looking at her computer. Not sure if it was a Gay issue as it was for me and my Husband. Terrible company...Do not recommend whatsoever. They will hire people who are not experienced and when you ask them questions they will have no idea what the answers are... and then when you go in for an appointment you would assume to trust they are the professionals in assisting you to take care of your taxes.. thats false. The IRS will come back at you and still ask you for more money because the HRblock reps clearly didn't know what they were doing when they filed for you. I have been the one to use online DIY tax softwares and have had 0 issues with filing myself. Crazy to think that when you try to get more hands on in person help at HR block, the issues are endless. Their customer service is awful and they take forever to get back to you. Service is absolutely terrible. I've used them for years with no issues but now all of a sudden I cannot access years of tax returns which I desperately need access to. Everytime I go to open a file I get an error message so I cannot trust a company that is esssentially holding my tax information and not helping me access it at all. I helped a family member file their taxes online using the H&R Block FREE online filing. The family member only had $12,000 in income. They did not owe ANY taxes and this should have been a FREE filing (just as it is advertised). One page asked the question if there was any sales taxes paid during the year. I tapped it and it automatically said she had paid $665 in sales taxes. That one question then caused her (in her extremely limited income situation to have to pay $70 plus tax) to file her income taxes. NOT OKAY!! A real scam here. That should have allowed her to remove that from her taxes. It shouldn't have even asked that question then. She is practically destitute and H&R BLOCK charged her when it was ADVERTISED that she can file for FREE. SCAM SCAM SCAM!! Never again!! read more

H&R block does NOT honor their calculation guarantee. I put in the total amount of my health insurance premium in H&R block tax software. It said the federal would only allow a portion of my premiums to be deducted and changed the amount on the federal form. When, using H&R block to import the info in the H&R block Utah state tax it imported the entire amount of the premium which is not correct. Utah State only allows you to claim what you claimed on the federal form so the calculation was not correct. I filed a claim with H&R block and they denied it without address this exact issue. read more

Just received their 2025 deluxe do-it-yourself software. I've used this every year for about 10 years Before I was a Turbo Tax customer. I have in the past found problems with both. With Turbo tax it was their inability to move between systems and printers. Several years ago H&R had serious issues with how they accounted for Heath Savings Accounts. I just bypassed their software to obtain the correct results. I think they eventually fixed the problem. Now I find that using this tax software is dreadful. I've switched to a windows 11 based laptop. The only way to be able see the entire information screen is to use Windows 11 settings and set the character size to the lowest level possible! Anything larger and the information rolls off the screen and out of sight. This might be passible on a 27 inch desktop monitor but not a 15 inch laptop. More frustrating is the inability to contact H&R to discuss the issue. Never again! Turbo Tax is by far the largest tax software company and I will be switching ASAP! Rick R read more

My one complaint is that the appointments are scheduled for every half hour. 30 minutes is barely enough time to finish a simple return. This causes a backup of customers. Tracking down the error and finding a solution has been impossible and their phone customer service is literally designed to keep you off the phone. I have been using H&R Block's in-person tax prep service with the same individual successfully for the last three years. However, my previous tax professional was on leave this year, so I was offered another individual. Trusting my previous experience, I accepted the offer. I pay a premium for this service because I generally have a complex tax setup and additional questions. Unfortunately, the replacing individual first brushed me off, offered to answer my question after filing my taxes, and then ghosted me. I never got my question answered. This service cost me $617 and I couldn't get a key tax question answered. I am not leaving one star since my taxes are filed. I switched from TurboTax to H&R Block because I trusted the name and found the price to be good. However, I will not use H&R Block again because I have found their tax preparation process to be confusing and their support options to be surprisingly bad. I spent extra money having them complete a state tax return for me, and the software gave me a link where it seemed they were saying I had to pay the tax. Even when I asked for clarifying help their help desk could not tell me whether H&R Block had just transferred money from my account to the state, or whether I had to pay using the payment link. As a result, I paid the state tax twice and am getting no help to claw back my payment. Now the H&R Block help desk automated message says I have no right to any person's help. I called a local office and they said they have nothing to do with the software. read more

This is followup on my 1-star review of H&R Block on 2/24/2022 I called that number noted below and recorded my call. After 12 minutes a fellow answered and said they were busy, sorry for the wait. He did not seem to know what to do with my concern. I then heard a click and a recording saying wait for 20 minutes. After 10 minutes, I hear a recorded message that my wait time will be 20 minutes. So I am waiting and have no illusion that my simple concern will ever be understood, least of all -solved. After 30 minutes I spoke with Ms. Kiara S. who provided detailed information and tried her best but we were at a standstill. She was the most helpful so far. They are great unless you have a problem. I'm not sure what their guarantee means. They absolutely failed to handle a simple inquiry by the IRS. They guessed at the problem, missed a deadline by two weeks, and never bothered to talk to me about the issue. I later discovered my file ended up being passed around the office between three seasonal employees. two of which quit at some point. The delays and confusion resulted in me receiving threatening letters from the IRS and I almost ended up in tax court over a simple clerical error which was both my fault and the tax preparers fault. I had been with H&R Block for 10 years and had no problems until my regular tax preparer retired. I never received an apology or any sort of refund. The general attitude seem to be "well...things happen." I ended up having to fix the problem myself after 12 hours on the phone with the IRS. I have an issue with H&R desktop software. The issue is that the software INCORRECTLY calculates Minnesota real estate refund. Two calls to customer service rimed out and disconnected me. The chat person was of no help. If you file for a MN real estate refund, manually check the H&R result by manually completing the MN State refund form! H&R calculated mine $400.00 short! If I can't trust H&R to be accurate or get support from them, may have to back to TurboTax. read more

I've used HR Block for years but no more! Advise you to walk away especially if paying for DIY program if you think you're protected from mistakes made by them. A glitch in software allowed an erroneous filling for education tax credit I wasn't entitled to in 2020 cost me in penalties and interest. Even though I had purchased the Deluxe program, they still refused to honor it even though I pointed out and asked why did the program allowed it to go through in 2020 without question but in 21 & 22 program disallowed this credit and wouldn't let me proceed. On 2.17.2024, S.Hanley from HR Block in Orange CT completed my 2023 Federal 1040 and determined that I owed $2002 to the IRS. I authorized her to have it automatically withdrawn from my bank. On 2.22.2024, I returned to S.Hanley to complete a 2023 Fed 1040x because I found another W2 form. During the processing of the 1040x she was unable to allocate the $2002 that I had already paid therefore the 1040x indicated, erroneously, that I owed $2187 when in fact it should have been only $185. At that moment, I told her to remove the automatic payment option so that I wouldn't be over charged. She assured me that she did just that. On 2.26.2024, there was another automatic withdrawal from my bank by the IRS for the amount of $2187. I immediately contacted HR Block & S.Hanley to inform them that I did not authorize this transaction. S.Hanley informed me that the 1040x was rejected so she had her manager, K.Hammac, fix the issue including the appropriate amount due which should have been $185. I learned this was not true. I requested that S.Hanley contact the IRS to explain my issue and was informed by the IRS agent that HR Block pushed through the same exact (wrong) 2023 Fed1040x a total of 3 times. Additionally, K.Hammac was the one who pushed all 3 amendments through. This was done without my knowledge, consent or signature. I'm very concerned that these duplicate erroneous 1040x forms will be reprocessed by the IRS and I will not have funds in my account to support those withdrawals if they occur. In the meantime, I've been struggling financially due to their mistakes and I'm unable to pay some of my bills. I want the public to know to stay very far away from HR Block especially S.Hanley and K.Hammac who are totally dishonest and incompetent. read more

I am leaving a review of tax software they sell and this is the national office so it has to be left here. I have been buying the tax software , used to be tax cut, since around 1992. That is a lot of years. This year 2022 taxes, I again bought the downloadable product. I got through the Federal, but I had Federal and State, and the state would not work no matter what. Since it was getting close to the deadline I was really stressed as one could wait for help online for hours and still no help. I finally had to go to the state office to get manual forms. They are not put out anywhere anymore. That was what I had to do and I hand carried it in on the last day. So far nothing said, but who knows if they wont be calling later. The program didnt cost that much. I put me through a hell of a lot of stress over many days trying everything to get it to work, and hours waiting on the phone for nothing. So today long after the deadline I called to see if they would offer a refund for the program. The system did not recognize my phone even though they have it. I had to yell represerntative about 10 times to override a disconnect. The first rep just hung up. Didnt want to deal with it. The next reansferred, and transferred finally to refunds. I think the prices was only around $30. I talk to the guy in refunds and he says they cant do ANYTHING. No refund no discount on next year, no nothing. I ask why he says you used the federal part. I did. It was the state that was faulty. Since I used any part they offer you nothing if the rest doesnt work. Hours on hold....tough luck! So beware your product is not something they stand behind and if anything goes wrong TOUGHT LUCK ON YOU! read more

I am beyond frustrated with the horrible online and tax pro service. The online upgrade that was supposed to allow me to input an S Corp K-1 required me to route to a tax pro simply to enter a on-line tax credit that should have just been built into the K-1 program. So additional cost there. Then the so-called tax pro made numerous errors to the tune of $22K that I luckily caught when she re-input the K-1 incorrectly. Then they couldn't figure out how to efile it. So I had to file an extension on April 14. Still no solution in May despite two phone calls to customer service. Then they transfer me to a new tax pro who is having his own issues getting it filed and is giving me one sentence answers in text, despite repeatedly asking to call me, that are not helpful on how to fix a PIN and get this filed. I am now talking to a class action attorney at this point because my repeated attempts at escalating and getting the return I paid for on my desk or filed are going nowhere. I paid fees I want refunded and I lost business revenue spending hours upon hours trying to fix H&R's problems! Way to lose a long-time customer and walk yourselves into a lawsuit! read more

I will not EVER use H&R Block to do my taxes again. On Feb. 11, 2025 the Barbourville, KY office did out taxes. While all of the people in this office are very nice and helpful for tax preparation, apparently H&R Block has instructed the branches to steal your money! We paid $300 for our tax preparation, and when we got home and looked over our receipt that evening, we discovered that the cost to do the taxes was indeed only $260 dollars. There was an "optional" charge of $40 listed on the receipt for the "Peace of Mind" clause. We had no idea what this was or why we were charged it with our agreeing to it. Apparently this clause covers up to $6,000 if they make an error in your taxes. I was always under the impression if THEY made an error they would cover it anyway... After looking at the clause we saw where you had 7 days to decline it for a full refund, so we called the next day asking for our $40 back. We pointed out that no one asked us if we wanted it in the first place, nor were we advised that they were charging our credit card this extra fee. The last I heard, doing that was illegal and called "theft." They told us that they were instructed to include it on all the taxes they prepared. We advised them on Feb. 12, 2025 to refund us the $40 dollars. It is now May 3, 2025 and we have still not received it even after at least a dozen attempts. We notified them in writing and via email requesting it, as this is what the internet advised to do. In the process of researching this online we found where that have had class action lawsuits filed against them (and were ordered to make restitution in the millions) for THIS EXACT SAME thing. They have been unlawfully charging this since at least 2002, and apparently they get more money from taking the $40 from millions of tax payers than they pay out in fines and restitution, so they have no incentive to stop stealing from us. In speaking with various attorneys it would cost me approximately $500 to get my $40 back... So they may have gotten away with this, but if they lose enough business because of this illegal practice, they may stop doing it. I hope this review will save others the stress (and $40) of trying to make the huge corporations do the right thing by standing up for the little guys once and for all. read more

I've been doing my own taxes using H&R Block's website for over a decade. From what I hear, it's pretty much like TurboTax in that H&R Block's site walks you step-by-step through the form filling process. Once I got the hang out of it, I was doing my taxes fast, some years in less than an hour or two. However, as I've grown older and my tax situation has become more complicated, I've had to enlist the help of an H&R Block tax professional to double-check my work and minimize (or maximize, depending on how you look at it) the impact to my wallet. Overall, I think H&R Block has done a pretty good job and that's why I keep coming back to them. Over the past 10+ years, I've seen the site/interface change. In general, I've always found it to be a little clunky and sometimes difficult to navigate, but ultimately, I'm able to accomplish what I want. The site can automatically import W2s and other tax forms so you don't have to manually input numbers into boxes. You can also upload PDFs of tax forms and H&R Block's software will automatically import the relevant values into your return. I've used this feature and found it to be very convenient, saving me from having to do tedious data entry. I double-check the numbers and not once have I found an error, so the import features work. One benefit to using H&R Block every year is having access to your past tax returns and seeing handy comparisons between the current year return and the previous year return. On my last tax return, I wasn't 100% confident that I was completing my Schedule E and associated federal and state depreciation schedules correctly, so I added on the "Tax Pro Review" feature. I submitted my completed return to H&R Block and was assigned a tax pro. On a Sunday afternoon/evening during tax season, the tax pro quickly reviewed my return and sent me a message. Sure enough, I had completed my depreciation schedules incorrectly and he corrected them, saving me about $350. Considering Tax Pro Review cost $89.99, it was money well spent, not only for the money it saved me, but for the peace of mind and confidence it provided me as well. Dustin McCandless, based at H&R Block's headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, was the tax pro assigned to me. There's a secure messaging system within H&R Block's site that allowed me to send Dustin messages and ask him questions, which I did. Dustin was quick to answer my questions. I usually heard back from him in less than hour each time I asked him a question. It seemed liked he worked around the clock, regardless of what day or hour it was. Dustin answered most of my questions and I was satisfied with his service. If you choose Tax Pro Review like I did, after H&R Block assigns a tax pro to you, you get to see a picture of them with their contact info when you log into the site. You can also click on them and read a little "about me" profile they've filled out. I noticed Dustin wasn't a CPA and I presume most of the H&R Block "Tax Pros" aren't, so that's something to keep in mind. I had problems with the site this year. There was one evening where I was trying to log in and I was getting server errors. I'm pretty sure the site was down. Then there were several times where I had problems getting the secure messages to load. That was annoying. Either the messages box would show up blank or H&R Block would tell me there was an error, so I had to wait to read my messages. H&R Block offers various packages depending on your tax situation. In the past, I've usually spent less than $100 to have them file both my federal and state returns. This year, the tax pro review almost doubled my cost, but I was okay with that. It turned out to be $49.99 for federal, $36.99 for state, and $89.99 for tax pro review. Total $176.97. read more

I downloaded my 1099 data from Edward Jones. Last year I had to enter the purchase date and the cost for each transaction. This year I have to enter the purchase date for each transaction along with the Fed ID number for Edward Jones. The reps on phone support know about this and know what to tell the customer, but that doesn't help when I have to sort through 55+ lines of sale transactions to find the purchase price. I couldn't get past the wrap up of my tax return because of the errors in the download (missing dates) and the software wasn't good enough to tell me were the errors were. So I had to call 3 times to find someone that could help me figure out what the problem was. I decided to use H&R Blick to file my Federal taxes this year. Never again!!!! I always file early February so I get my refund quickly. Instead of my refund, I received a letter from the IRS asking for copies of all my forms. Seems the H&R Block software never asked me to download forms. So instead of getting my refund in 2 weeks, I now have to wait 6-8 more weeks. Going back to Turbo Tax. Never had an issue with them. read more

I have been a H&R customer for 17 years and this year 2022 filing has been the worst. The new software will not let the filing agents file the Returns are sitting pending and not being unloaded. Fix the promblem already those poor agents. read more

Have used the online app for years and did them myself. This year, I had to go back to my previous years form and retrieve some info myself. Then because I owe a lot so have questions, went through the chat to see how I could change to get a review and they answered that I would have the option to switch at the end. Wrong....never got an option, just took my payment for the self service form. Also asked if I would be able to get assistance with quarterly payment if needed and was told I would. Well, not if someone isn't following up with me, I won't. Definitely looking elsewhere for next year. ​ read more

First off, don't even think about getting their service. I have a first-hand experience where a tax preparer told me to file an incorrect amendment resulting in a couple of thousand more in taxes to the state. They didn't even accept the fact that she was mistaken and didn't refund the money. Overall, I can fully vouch that this is a fraudulent business practice with zero damn about customers while charging hundreds of dollars in legal fees. Not recommended at all. read more

I want to warn people about H&R block services!! They did my return for 2018 and screwed it up so badly that even the IRS was appalled and suggested I report them to two different agencies which I did. They not only charged me for the original return, but also to file the form for my health insurance that they failed to file. Total cost over $500!! My return wasn't that complicated. Fortunately, I didn't lose my health insurance but the company made no attempt to compensate me for the trouble they caused, the stress of potentially losing my health insurance, the extra trip on a Saturday to fix the return, nothing! I'm considering an attorney for compensation since they offered none. At the very least they should have refunded what I paid. DON'T USE THEM!! I used the Sharon Rd location in Charlotte, but I wouldn't trust any of them. read more

Garbage. Do not ever file your state taxes through them. It's unconstitutional to charge people to pay their taxes.
