Really disappointed in Ha Long Bay. Came here for dinner with a friend, expecting tasty Vietnamese at a budget price, and ended up eating a very bland meal at a surprisingly high price for the area.
My friend and I both ordered from the vegetarian section of the menu, which I confirmed was also all vegan (no meat, no fish, no egg, and nothing sneaky in the sauce. I didn't specifically ask about honey but nothing seemed like it would obviously have honey in it -- but if you're a vegan maybe just double-check for yourself. Note that their desserts all contain dairy.)
I got the satay vegetarian dish and my friend got the cashew sauce vegetarian dish. Hers was quite bland, like eating veggies in a thin flavourless broth, the kind of broth that your grandmother makes you eat when you're sick and can't stomach anything solid. By contrast, my satay sauce actually had some flavor and was mildly spicy, but not especially nice nevertheless. Both our dishes had wayyyyy too much bok choy, which I probably shouldn't complain about because it IS super healthy, but sometimes when I'm eating it I feel like I'm gnawing through a giant bed of seaweed (minus the saltiness) -- the texture of bok choy just grosses me out. Gives the ol' molars a real workout.
The tofu was also not nice at all -- super squishy and way too bland. I'm not a huge fan of tofu anyway but this tofu was especially gross. Tofu can be nice when it's crispy and marinated, but not this stuff.
The meals were not cheap either, unlike lots of Vietnamese places on Victoria St. The vegetarian plates were $13-14, not including rice, so by the time we ordered rice and a few spring rolls we were each paying $20 for a large but average-tasting meal. Not cool.
Atmosphere-wise, the place is nice, with adorable brightly coloured lanterns hanging from the ceiling at the back of the room. It was clean and nicely decorated in the "cheap and cheerful" style of Victoria St. Actually, it's cuter than most of the neighbouring places. Too bad the food didn't really match the nice interior, though.
All in all, much better places to try along Victoria St. read more
