I visited this place while visiting family in Illinois. It was easy to find parking despite visiting during the lunch hour, which was great. The place itself and the bathrooms are kept very clean and I loved the decor inside. The staff are amazing - very friendly and caring. They made me feel at home and were attentive to our needs. I even saw another customer drop by and hugged most of the staff here, so you can tell they are great people who take care of their customers. Now, as for the food...everything was DELICIOUS! We were very impressed with the pretty large menu with tons of options which honestly made it difficult to choose what to order because everything sounded so good! One of the cooks recommended we try the chips with queso, which were great! I tried the huarache with carne asada and a sope with al pastor. The portions are definitely generous, so I was not able to finish everything. The food is fresh and tasty. We ended our meal with the fried ice cream and churros as dessert which were also delicious. Definitely went into a food coma after this meal, but it was well worth it. Highly recommend stopping by here for some authentic Mexican food if you're in the area or driving by! read more

The chicken quesadilla was ok but definitely is the worst I've had from any Mexican restaurant so are the steak tacos I mean those were actually just awful filled with salt like to be honest Taco Bell has better Mexican food than this place don't waste your money here. read more

We stayed in a hotel in town while passing through on I-80 and were recommended this restaurant by hotel staff. It did not disappoint! It is somewhat of a hole-in-the-wall and could be hard to miss driving by without directions, but the food was delicious! You order at the counter from a wide selection of options on the menu and there are several tables for eating in or you can order it to go. We got chips and salsa for an appetizer and they were not the best. The chips were overly crunchy and the salsa tasted pretty bland. This was the main reason we gave less than 5 stars. They did bring out a spicy salsa and medium salsa verde in squeeze bottles, which we tried mixing into the salsa to give it more heat but it didn't mix well. lol! My son got the beef taco salad, my other son got three beef tacos (on special on Mondays!), my husband got a chicken burrito plate, and I got the shrimp fajitas. Ordered take out. Had a "Mexican burrito", which has pork carnitas. What I got was not carnitas. It was shredded pork, and a VERY skimpy amount at that. First time eating there. I got take out. Nachos. Absolutely delicious, fresh cilantro, red salsa, hand made guacamole. I'm autistic so the texture, the crunch of fresh veggies and the milieu of flavors are very integral to my enjoyment. Habanero delivered! The jalapeños were potent with flavor. Saw on google they had $1 tacos on Monday-Tuesday so stopped by on my road trip back home. Tacos are actually $1.25 now which is fine but the pastor is still full price. A review on google said their pastors were amazing so got 4 and wish we only got 1 or 2 as they weren't that good. Kind of plain and not much flavor or good texture. Instead I would just stick it with their steaks and their chorizos. Their chorizo was ok and up to par or at least was that much better after eating the pastor. The steak was good especially for the price but they seem to put cheese in all tacos even though we said only onions and cilantro. So check your order especially if you're getting it to go. Only tried their hottest salsa supposedly a habanero but really wasn't spicy at all to me, however it may be to others in the area. It had a touch of habanero flavor but none of the spice not bad just not as good as expected. Extremely disappointed. We ate there years ago and very much enjoyed it so when back in the area around 4 p.m. today we stopped in for dinner. Sign said seat yourself so we did. We sat there, waiting and waiting for someone to come to our table. Another couple came in sat down and they must have been regulars as the waitress immediately went to their table and chatted away. We went to Starve Rock for the day and on our way home did a Google search on where we should eat. I LOVE Mexican food and it is usually very difficult to ruin for me. We were surprised to see the large menu with lots of great items. They have a choice of spicy or mild in-house hot sauce and their guacamole was great! The staff is very friendly here, but that is the only good thing I have to say about this place. I almost feel bad posting such a bad review because they were so nice. There were a lot of people in the restaurant, so I was expecting to get some pretty yummy food. I ordered veggie fajitas with a side of shredded cheese to go. It took about 15 minutes which is fine. You can eat in, but you will need to watch out for your order to come up and go get the food tray yourself. The cost was about $13.00 which is kind of pricey in my experience for veggie fajitas, but I didn't really care about it. That is, I didn't care about it until I got home and opened the container. The veggie blend was almost completely made up of green peppers. Out of about 1 cup of veggies, there was 3 slivers of onion and 1 sliver of tomato. Yuck! To make matters worse, the veggies were so greasy that there was a shallow pool of oil across the bottom of the container. I was given 3 tortillas, 1 of which was torn.The rice was dry. Their refried beans were good. The cheese I ordered on the side? They gave me 1 tablespoon of shredded cheese for something like $1.50. Gee, thanks. Bottom Line: Despite the lovely staff, I would never recommend anyone go here. The portions are small compared to your typical Mexican restaurant. The food isn't good unless you are just going to eat refried beans! read more
