We went in on a Sunday walking in at 9pm and ordered at 9:10. When we got the food it was 9:25 and the staff said they are closing soon. Online it showed they closed at 10. When it hit 9:35 the staff was basically trying to force us out. They started to blast music through out the restaurant, breaking down everything, and taking our food away mid French fry. At 9:48 pm one of the employees told us we had to leave because they are closed. We said that they closed at 10 but she was insisting that they closed at 9:30pm and we have to leave. No signature "Char grill" sear marks or flavor, either. The Chicken Nuggies were in a thick, hardened batter. They had a chemical taste with fry oil flavor. Tried all 3 Ranch side dressings. Original, Avocado & Spicy. Good, bad, and Horrible.Tempura Green Beans and Fries 50/50. Fries were good, GB ok. The fountain Pepsi on ice was good. Tables were unusually high and dirty, as we're all unseated tables. The bathroom was filthy. I went in with an email offering a free cheeseburger with a $5 purchase. At the counter, I was unable to open the required barcode for redemption. The server and manager denied the freebie. I think this is a scam because if you go through the trouble of ordering, they hedge their bets that you won't leave. Both server and manager were somewhat rude and uninterested in helping. Today I decided to try the Baha Crispy Fish Sandwich. Boy what a mistake. It was the tiniest piece of substandard fish that I have ever eaten! I couldn't believe it when I saw it! I went to the cashier and was told there was nothing they could do about it. I have been a long time customer and was shocked that they could do nothing! I ordered a charburger meal with no meat patty but instead received a grilled cheese with all the veggies. I mentioned that I wanted to still have the essence of a burger just no meat due to dietary restrictions. When I received it since it wasn't a bun that I wanted definitely didn't taste as good as with a bun. I ate one of them and didn't end up eating the other. Also when my husband went back to ask for 1 ranch the Mexican guy standing there just pointed over to the kiosk that was away from the main register area and just said just order over there very rudely.....He didn't say oh I'm sorry I can't take your order I don't know how to use the register here or you have to pay for it and just pointed. Weird smell coming from kitchen and with my restaurant experience I can tell you that is either the fryers not being changed for too long or the grease trap being bad. I've been eating at The Habit for years and it seems like over the last year when I order my burger the bottom bun is always wet. I don't know if it's from the lettuce or what so I stopped going ,the french fries weren't as good as they used to be. The bacon isn't as good and as you walk in, there's a big sign quality you can taste well obviously that's a lie now and one more thing the staff is so unprofessional. I sat down waiting for my food they put an order on the counter. It sat there for five minutes. Yes, I counted. They never called out the order number and I saw someone just walk up, assumed that it was theirs and took it. Tables are all dirty. The floor is filthy and the garbage can is overfilled with trash. I had to leave my tray of trash on the table as others were leaving their trays of trash on the garbage can and around it. I don't understand how they could not see this happening. Toxic paper/glue straws, and they now charge $0.65 for a single little cup of ranch dressing with your fries (find out the hard way when you pick up your food and they want to charge you for it...bonus points if you have no cash because you don't paid with a card). Love the salad here, especially when we have the chicken substituted with beef (at times we have the chicken substituted, depending on our mood) plus the sweet potato fries. Today, my husband and I both ordered cheeseburger, however to our disappointment the hamburger buns were cold and did not give justice to the goodness of the beef patty. It just ruined our burger craving. Good thing, when my husband brought it to the attention of the cashier, the manager gave him a free cheeseburger gift certificate. I'm so sad to leave this review as we have been big fans of Habit for years. Unfortunately, the last dozen or so times we have come they have gotten at least one and sometimes multiple things about our order wrong. Never any attempt to make it right just one of us waiting for 15 min for a new item while the rest of the family finishes their food. Burgers and sandwiches are still good, salads too. But the experience just has been too negative to enjoy. And be prepared, recent change is you can't get a single ranch with your meal for free. You pay for every one. I would much rather they just raise the price of the food and not Nickel and dime about a small ranch. read more

Ironic that there is a Hamburger Habit about 3 blocks from my home yet this is my first time to an HH: and good in that it is SB that this joint originated. This one is in La Cumbre on a corner across from the 'bux and Lure (next to Bristol) and near where there used to be a Sears. The food is ordered at a front desk, i was given a pager which scared the beegezus out of me when it wailed on announcing my food is ready to pick up. And yet i was asked to tip the counter people? What makes more sense is to tip the cooks. i mean we also had to help ourselves and schlepp the condiments outside plus bus out table. In any event: the food was very good: burgers cooked to order as were the fries. We sat outside which under normal circumstances would have been a pleasure during this beautiful, sunny SB day. But there is major LOUD construction going on in what was the Sears parking lot. The counter people were a little shy and quiet in a situation which required loud speech and specific instructions. Yet the service was good overall. We took home the Grilled chicken Sammy on Sourdough which also included Avocado and Bacon. This endured the 10 minute ride home and my nephew loved it. On this rainy day in Santa Barbara my BBQ bacon char burger wrapped in lettuce with caramelized onions was perfect, warm, sloppy-good. I had to use a fork and knife it was so loaded. The Santa Barbara Habit burgers are under new ownership, and sadly they are not the same. We just ate at the La Cumbre location and found out they got rid of the turkey burger, which was my go-to. I had the Impossible burger instead, and it was super underwhelming and bland with a ton of mayo on it. My husband ordered the BBQ chicken salad like he always does, apparently they no longer put black beans and tortilla strips in the salad, but it doesn't mention it anywhere on the menu. The customer service at the register was good, but the man expediting was very unfriendly. My husband saw one of the line workers in the bathroom and he didn't wash his hands before he went to work. It is extremely sad that the new company has gone and changed this amazing Santa Barbara institution, and sadly we will not be back. read more

I have great memories of enjoying the habit, but I'm starting to question why I liked this place after my last recent experience. I got the veggie burger and it was bland and had no condiments. I've had better veggie burgers at restaurants that don't specialize in burgers like the habit. The sweet potatoes fries are not as crisp as I remember and the salads are way over priced for the quality you get. Last night was a low point for a beloved once local franchise. The new kiosks they installed are terrible. And food ordered on it will not be alerted to you when ready. I was in between 6:15 and 7pm. The dining room was full of people all waiting for food. The counter was also full of food that was unclaimed and the staff was not checking on the orders to make sure they were picked up. After waiting for my noti for 25 minutes I asked if my order was ready and the staff seemed confused if it was ready or not and then told me it was still being prepared. I waited another 10 minutes observing customers find out that after waiting a long time their food had been left to sit on the counter. One patron told me he had been there patiently waiting for a text that his order would be ready for 50 minutes. Another patron was waiting with her child and had a similar problem. I followed up and found that my order was also just sitting there (milkshake melted). Something went terribly wrong. Kiosks don't seem to be very useful. Their UI is bad and they won't notify when the food is ready. Staff needs to do better making sure food isn't just sitting on the counter getting cold. Good luck! read more

I'm so sad to say that I will not be going to this Habit again. I believe yesterday 11*8*24 was the day they got the new kiosk. As a person who religiously goes to this habit, I know how much of a meal cost and the difference buying items individually. Everything adds up to a different price. The manger wanted to argue with me and I was just annoyed so I let it be. You cannot order half and half with a meal anymore is dumbest thing ever. Also, there was a female next to me who had an autistic son who had food allergies and she was unable to notify their food. We both waited 45 MINUTES for our food. The food was soggy, cold and it tasted like old grease. This place was one of the places I knew did not upset my stomach. Now, ive been sick for a couple of hours. The staff were all new which was a surprise as their workers who have been there for years have left due to the changes. These new ones were like deer in headlights. Ranch is a dipping sauce which restaurants make HUGE batches; I understand if someone takes 10 that's when you start charging. However, the amount of money that cost to make ranch is equal to amount of shipping ketchup. I have been going to the Habit for as long as I can remember. When there was only one, the original. My favorite has been the Teriyaki steak sandwich on a French Roll. Someone decided to take away the French roll and use another type of bread and I stopped ordering, now that I'm craving it, they got rid of the sandwiches all together!!! Who does that?!? First off I like Habit. Being a Santa Barbara original I ve loved their bugera for years. BUT now you see they are running ads all over social media and right here on Yelp. You are supposed to get a free double jar burger if you sign up for their app and spend more than five dollars. So I signed up for the app and bought an additional bacon barbecue charburger but to my surprise when I went to check out on the app, I did not get my free double char burger. And worse yet when I went to the store to pick up my order, the manager at the Lira shop just told me it's not her problem and then walked away, I asked again. What do I do because you owe me a free charger and she said too bad. This is exactly the opposite of how they customer service used to be. It's very unfortunate. This is an easy all around good hamburger place. There are options for kids and any adult with some healthy choices to go with it. I stick to the charburger with cheese or the steak sandwich, can't really be disappointed. There is also a kids meal that includes a great apple juice and fries for those kids who just have to have them!
