Don't know who is doing their pricing now but it's as bad as goodwill. They are not doing their business any favor by pricing free items at ridiculous prices! King of the Shlock! One of my favorite pastimes when traveling or having free time is finding the local thrift stores. I remember when I was a singer on Holland America back in the '80s and we would stop every two weeks in Vancouver. I found an amazing steamer trunk in fabulous condition that must have been from the 30's or 40's. I put wheels on that baby and carted her around with me for years when I entertained. I remember when I was playing Billy Bigelow in Carousel in a summer stock in Pennsylvania and the local thrift store in Mansfield had a mink coat for $10. I bought that coat and tried to butch it up and wear it around. It still looked like I was wearing a butched up woman's coat! I eventually gave it away but had fun wearing back in the days when it was stylish and acceptable. To this day I have a fantastic tweed wool winter coat that I found in a thrift store in the east village in New York. That baby has saved my ass in the worst storms. To this day I wear her wear her whenever it's cold. And so, even as I spend my leisure time down on Oak Island in 2023, I still hit the local thrift stores,except now I call them "schlock" stores which my mother nicknamed them. Schlock is the Yiddish word for junk or crap and that's what my mother thought about all of that. She always liked things brand new having come from a family during the depression, where instead I love to find a bargain and something that's quality but broken in. I would have to say from all of the schlock stores in the Oak Island/ Southport area, my favorite is Habitat for Humanity Store. Although they don't have clothes, there, their offerings of furnishings and bedding and sports equipment and kitchenware, etc. is pretty outstanding and well priced Just this past weekend I stopped by and found a wonderful black briefcase for my work for $8 and a colorful outdoor tablecloth for my back porch for $4. I see so many things there that I want, but I have no floor space or wall space left in my house. If I buy something, something else is going to have to go, and that's a tough one for me when most of the things in my house are from family heirlooms or things I really like. In the meantime, it's a relaxing way for me to spend an hour or two, and over the years I have found wonderful things at habitat for humanity. Check out their specials. When I was there Saturday, everything was 50% off! I don't think I could ever go back to paying full price for most things ever again lol. I may not be a child from the depression, but I was the child of a woman who was a child during the depression and so my frugality lives on! Next time you are visiting Oak Island or Southport stop by the habitat for humanity store. The staff is lovely and welcoming, the offerings are plentiful and well priced, and their men's bathroom is the biggest bathroom I have seen anywhere! Lol Happy Hunting! read more

This is our go-to place for anything we need for our house. We will always check here first to see if they have it, and most times they do! I also have a little free library out front of our house and I always find fantastic books there to restock my shelves. The employees there are all so helpful and friendly, and we always find great items at a great price. read more

I recently retired to Southport and am always on the prowl for "fun & funky" items to decorate my new home. Like many second-hand stores, finding that "perfect item" is sometimes "hit & miss," especially during tourist season, but the prices are great & the staff are friendly & always willing to help me load-up my treasures. I'm not sure that I'll be able to use all of my purchases but I should have no problem gifting them to someone else or donating them back to the Restore Shop. Highly recommended! read more

Love to shop this store. Staff are very helpful, I bought an amazing hand painted dining room set, washed it up, touched up nicks and we got new glass for the top-- beautiful addition to my kitchen. Also when I find things that no longer fill our needs, but could be used by others I bring them over to our Restore. We had a dryer we were replacing and they came and picked it up-- easy-peasy. Okay - let me first say that I love Habitat for Humanity and their Restores - I love what they do for the community. Ugh! This Restore is not good... There was a 50% off furniture "Porch Sale" with literally pure junk. Terribly worn out chairs and stuff no one would want with "high" prices. The store itself is huge and has wood paneling throughout the entire store. It is dark and hard to really see stuff. Imagine your uncle's wood paneled rec room growing up. When I first entered there was the world's 3rd ugliest used couch (blue plush) for $235. Really? These prices are very unrealistic and unfair. Maybe because it's at the beach - beach prices? How they move merchandise here, I don't even know. I've never seen a used sofa at Goodwill for more than $100. And anyway, you can buy new at IKEA for less than $235... I spent maybe 5-10 minutes browsing and literally ran (speed walking) out of the store. Again, I love charities but this place was whack! read more

That manager was fired long ago . I think if you were to go there now you would see a very different scene. The management is wonderful and the prices are fair. We even have a free box. The store is wonderful inside and out. Please give them another chance!! read more

First off, I moved back to Oak Island from Raleigh where you can get anything and everything you want. I moved to the small island and purchased a few rentals, that being said I ventured into this store and was immediately greeted by a lovely woman Holly. I continued to frequent this place with many successes. The newest manager Chuck is fabulous! He knows his products and prices according, if you think something is priced unfairly you can always ask...They always run specials throughout the week, if you find them on Facebook they announce their specials, they're products are ever changing. I've gone in the morning and in the late afternoon there are different and new products out. I've even donated and an hour later they have it out on the sales floor. You can even take your pet in with a leash or carry them if their small. Very friendly atmosphere, if your from out of town please stop by there. It's right before the bridge to the island, as someone previously stated the parking lot is the busiest place in Southport. You won't be sorry. read more
