There are always give and takes in opening a business but as of spring 2019, the staff is sufficient in quantity and training, the number of students is reasonable without overloading the available teachers. They are flexible with timing changes and vacation requests. It is only open for Mon, Wed, Fri with Friday being the most empty if you want your child to have more teacher time. I have grade 9 and grade 2 boys who attend the reading program. For the grade 2, with only 6 months of time in Canada and only 5 months at Kumon (and elementary), he can read simple novels as fast as his Japanese. The highschooler has progressed from lack of confidence in ELL1 to challenging himself to get out of ELL by next year. I believe she cares quite deeply about the education of each student, and in proxy that is how she chooses and leads her staff.

I signed up for a 4-week Introductory Mandarin course at the Hess 179 W Broadway location. A good…read morefriend had bought a Groupon and taken it the month prior and recommended trying it out, saying the class was fairly good for the Groupon price. I was scheduled to take the class in October, but due to a family emergency was unable to make the first two sessions. The office very kindly allowed me to re-enroll in the class for the month of November instead (Monday, 6-8pm). (I had to call four times to get a hold of anyone, but when I did they were quite pleasant and helpful). I drove up after work on Nov 14th, arriving at 5:50pm to find a dark storefront. Strange. There was another woman already waiting, and we spoke and figured out we were both registered for the same class. We waited for another 20min. Lights stayed off, no one in the office, and no sign on the door. I called the Hess line and got their after-hours recording, with no mention of the class (or cancelled class?). I called the office the next day to ask what had happened but no one picked up the phone. Fast-forward a week, to Monday Nov 21. I just called the office to find out if there would be a class tonight, and was informed by the male receptionist (dismissively) that "Yeah, we cancelled the class." No apology. I asked if they'd sent an email to the registered students or called to contact them, saying I hadn't gotten anything, and had I missed the email? He replied (insert a comically snotty tone here), "Actually, I'm not just a receptionist, I organize things for our Taiwan office too, so I get really busy." ...what?... I told him that I and another student had shown up at the office last Monday night for the class, only to find it dark, with no sign. He says, "Mm-hmm. Well, I'm probably going to re-schedule the class for December." No apology. No hint of apology in his tone. At no point did I get the impression he cared we'd shown up on time for a paid and scheduled class, and stood outside for 30min in the freezing rain. I asked how we'd know if the December class was actually going to happen, so we didn't show up to an empty storefront again, and he laughed dismissively and said "I'll probably send out an email." Then silence. I thanked him, hung up, and intend to tell every person I meet that if you want to waste your time and be on the receiving end of a horrifically entitled receptionist with an overinflated sense of his own importance, try a Mandarin class at this Hess location.
