Svenja's review is right on: there are plenty of bars like this around Berlin --cozy secondhand furniture jumbled together like a bad Tetris game, warm low lighting, great coffee+alcohol-- but the specific details set it apart. the staff are amazingly friendly (seriously, i wonder where they find these saints!), their cakes are always delicious and the perfect balance to their coffee, and you can get whatever kind of seat your little heart desires: curling-up-with-book benchseats in the big windows, working-with-laptop table seats, barstools for hanging with the bartenders, cuddling-sofas, and outdoor tables in summer for people-watching. it's a great spot for most times: earlier in the day, it's mellower and emptier (and less like a smokehouse), so is nice for working or catching up with friends. the wooden-tiled floors (very cool!) and brick archways, the old jazz and blues on the stereo, the old chairs and wooden tables decorated with fresh flowers and candles in big jars, make the space feel somehow a bit like a country inn during the day, a perfect pause from the bustle of the Markthalle next door. when Lerchen+Eulen fills with people at night, the dense layout and multiple rooms make for a wonderful coziness for huddling together...and Drinking (with a capital 'D'). Full story: We had a reservation for a group of twelve to celebrate a birthday at 7 pm on a Friday, which was the opening time of the bar and made us the first guests this evening. At 7:45 pm we were only four people yet, because some were running late. We were sitting outside, occupying one table and blocking another for the rest of the group. The inside seating area was completely empty, because of the nice weather, and almost half of the outside seating was not occupied at that time. At 7:50 pm the annoyed bar manager approached us, interrupted our conversation and asked is in a very rude and condescending tone if we were planning on ordering drinks at all tonight and if the rest of the group was coming at all. Then he told us that he had already sent customers away because of our group reservation. Since there were enough seats, inside and outside, to accommodate many other people, he blatantly lied to our faces to intimidate us into ordering drinks right away and implied to give away the second table if we didn't comply. We told him that we are about to order and assured him the rest of the group was coming very soon. One guest tried to lighten the mood and explained that we were celebrating a birthday. He replied that the actual birthday was two days ago, apparently implying that the celebration was not important since it was not the actual day of the birthday. His behavior was just beyond bizarre, ill-mannered and ill-tempered. This interaction completely killed the mood for me. Very shortly after his speech the other guests arrived and we ordered drinks until 1 am, so his mood changed in the course of the evening and he started to be (fake) nice to us. Since it was not my party and a change of location was difficult, we stayed and I didn't tell him off to his face, which I regret massively. I have never met such a rude, disrespectful bar manager in my life. I'm still shocked about his inexplicable behavior. It's such a shame we had a horrible experience here, because I know a couple of people who live close-by and I visit a lot, so I definitively would have returned at least to try other drinks and give the bar another chance. Also, the location itself is inviting and the women's restroom is pretty and clean. But, never in my life will I have an evening ruined in this establishment again.

It's a perfect accompaniment to the well crafted cocktails. As for the cocktails I ordered a Cover Club cocktail since it's one of my favorite gin cocktails and they specialize in gin. My BF ordered a more tropical drink with lychee. Both cocktails were delicious. I also loved the quiet and intimate atmosphere. It's perfect for a sophisticated date night. Berlin has some very promising cocktail bars so I'm making my way thru them but Windhorst is definitely my kind of spot.
