By far our favorite beach! The colors of the water were magical and snorkeling wasn't bad. The waves were stronger in front of the lifeguard station but there is a little inlet that was pretty calm. The beach was true beauty in all directions. We wanted a family picture in front of the water but when we stood there we realized greenery on the backside was even prettier! There is a quick stop near by at a dry cave. Was a wonderful stop. Wished we had more time there Parking is limited so get there early. Nice beach park on the North Shore of Kauai. There is a lifeguard and bathrooms on site across the street. There is an open air cave that you can explore. This beach does connect to tunnels so if you're unable to park at "Tunnels " park here for all the amenities that are not available at Haena. read more

Fantastic beach on the north shore. Frankly one of the best. We arrived early around 8am on a Saturday and it was easy to get parking. By afternoon there's a line up the road of people squatting hoping someone leaves. We snagged a great shady spot on the left as you enter the beach under the trees towards the rocks. People walk by but otherwise we were pretty isolated to enjoy our books with the waves crashing and the birds friends. I felt like Snow White and loved all the chicks and bird visitors. They were hoping for some of our holy grail donuts. read more

When I visited Kauai, a local friend took me to this beautiful beach. This is the state-controlled property we walked through the Taro Potato Field before we reached the beach. The tourism of Kauai Island is still low compared to Oahu Island, so in my impression, I felt that it was spacious and very comfortable no matter where I visited. Also, I had a double life with Kauai and Oahu until a few years ago, so I think I know a lot about the situation on Kauai. But it was my first time visiting this beach, so it was very fresh and refreshing. My cell phone is not connected there... Also there are no facilities where you can buy food trucks or drinks. However, there is only rich nature. There is a rocky area before entering the ocean but the shallow beach was very calm. I felt that there were more adults than children. **In January the beach portion of the park is closed due to extremely volatile waves. ** Visited Hā'ena Beach Park today - it's January. There is a small parking lot and a few picnic tables, as well as ample space to run around in the grass. While there are bathrooms, only port-a-potties were available because the beach portion of the park is closed for winter. The entire beach was taped off with caution tape as the waves are incredibly dangerous this time of year. Even the lifeguard station is closed. Nobody - not even animals - are out swimming in these dangerous waves. Go to the south shore of the island in winter if you want to swim in the ocean. Mmmm First, this listing says Kapaa but it's beyond Hanalei & almost the end of the road. Across from the giant dry cave. Not much surfing going on at noon. It's a nice wide beach with a low population. Restrooms, grass area, a rain shelter and lots of sand and driftwood. After we drank the coconut juice We returned as the vendor asked and he opened it up with a machete and he scooped out the coconut meat to eat. Just delish! read more

We stayed 2 weeks in Hawaii and this was one of our favorite beaches that we visited between Kauai and the big island. It was clean & such a gorgeous views, in every direction. Across the street there is a cave that is easily accessible. Bathrooms are located near the parking lot & there was quite a few parking spaces. Sand was clean & the waves weren't too big for our 4 year-old. He loved building sand castles. There were a few small shells along the beach & the sand was a beautiful dark gold. We loved the beach and want to visit again soon. read more

After leaving the Kalalau Trail along the Nā Pali Coast, we ventured to Ha'ena State Park. Parking was easily available in the small, poorly maintained parking lot across from the Dry Cave. If we were unable to find parking in the lot, there is plenty of street parking in the vicinity. We walked along Ha'ena State Park beach and enjoyed the scenery. It was one of the many beautiful beaches on Kauai. read more

Soak up the local culture, sit back and relax. We came here twice for sunset and it seems to be a popular spot for locals and visiting surfers (tents are popped up along the grassy area) Watch out for that under tow! especially during the winter time, it'll suck you in and wash you out to the sea, despite you being a strong swimmer. Great Beach - Good Parking We just wanted to go to the beach on the north shore but it was so hard to find parking at Tunnels or at the state park at the very tip of the Island, we came back a miles and found Haena Beach Park (Not really in Kapaa by the way - it is on the north shore). We parked easily and found a clean beach, with turquoise water and plenty of space to lay out. The beach wasn't too crowded and even though the bathrooms weren't really nice, it was great to have a bathroom option. The water was warm and beautiful and it wasn't too rough for a little swim. We love this area. Unfortunately like so many things on this trip... it's closed off. This has been a strange trip... The road to Gillin's Beach is closed until end of February 2019... Tunnels (Ha'ena) Beach and Ke'e inaccessible due to flooding in early 2018 (the road is blocked near the end of Hanalei Bay)... sinkhole in the road, so a blockade on the road to Hanalei Pier... Kīlauea Lighthouse not operating normal hours (still haven't figured out why on that one... UPDATE! because of low government funding, this is only open on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday... we figured that out because we kept going by there, and some of the people doing maintenance told us. We never found anything online.)... We became vaguely aware of the situation right before our trip but there is so little information available online so travelers know what to expect. I actually had to buy the online app version of Kauai Revealed to discover that Gillin's is closed until end of February. However, the app says nothing about Tunnels and Ke'e being closed off, so even it's not that updated. I'm posting this information in a few places so others will know. This is an area you definitely can't get to right now... not sure when that will change. read more

This is a pretty nice small beach. Not so over crowded like you might see on Oahu in Waikiki. Depending on the time of day and which day you may find yourself having your own private beach. The waves aren't too bad if you surf and or boogieboard either. The water is also clear enough to snorkel when I went. But on the shallower end closer to shore and depending on the day past the breaks. read more

Secluded. Beautiful. You will need a pass or a Hawai'i drivers license to get to the parking lot. There is also a shuttle but I don't know where it picks people up. There is a short walk to the beach that is mostly shaded because of the canopy. Well worth the effort to get to the end of the road. read more

Even if there is ample parking available, you will not be able to access the Kalalau trail or Hanipaki beach without this reservation. Wish we had known this sooner as no information was posted online for this trail prior to our departure. This beach is so deadly, a man was missing a couple days ago from snorkeling here. This place is also know as "tunnels beach" There is only one life guard shack. And usually two are on duty. I stepped in today to help a man try and get back ashore but the waves were too strong, HUGE and his knees were bad. We didn't know what to do! He kept getting knocked down. People who were trying to help got knocked down. Lifeguards came by after about 5 minutes of struggling. Thanks guys!!! When there are no life guards at a strong current, shore breaking beach, have the person crawl their way up with two people on his side pulling him up also. Taking his time and having the waves hit his butt going up. If you're a strong swimmer this beach is very fun, yes, there are rocks and a huge sudden drop off. So if you can't swim, it's hard to stay up and be on the deep end. The beach is beautiful, if you've visited the Kauai museum and saw the amazing shell leis made by Mrs. Hashimoto Goto, the shells are found at this beach. Bring floaters, boogie boards, and water! You'll probably be swallowing a lot of salt water. read more

Been here twice in three days. Parking looks rough, but just wait a few minutes and a spot will open up.A lady was selling fresh coconuts and some other fare in the parking lot. Bathrooms and a shower to rinse off after, are the icing on the cake. Probably the best beach on the island. The waves do break onto a steep shore, but the sand is easy on the feet. Great place to snorkel, lay out, body surf and surf. the waves were not huge when we were there, but some youngsters were trying like crazy to catch some waves. We found it not crowded, and peaceful. On Saturday and Sundays locals like to camp there, so you will see some tents and tarps on the grass, but it just shows you how great this place is. I asked about a permit to camp on the beach, and it doesn't cost anything, just a call to the county. Place is great...well worth it. Sign is posted "No camping on Mondays"...don't know why. Also, there is a manned life guard stand on this beach. read more
