Cool place. Very nice dining area and the bar looked very nice. Dinner menu had a nice variety of options. My mom chose the strawberry salad. She said it was really good. The chicken was probably the best seasoned chicken she'd ever had on a salad like that. It was fresh and was loaded with sweet strawberries. I had the Cajun seafood fettuccini The pasta is house made my dish was loaded with shrimp and calamari I still can't get over how good those mushrooms were in the dish. They were so fresh. And it was not very spicy. Sometimes when they say Cajun it just means hot. This dish just had a very nice seafood taste with a bit of a Cajun flair. We both had leftovers. Coffee was really good Our waitress was excellent and food came out very quickly. Manager was also out on floor checking on people. I wouldn't expect to find this kind of culinary experience in a small town most of the town. But, thanks to a huge food distribution company in the town, Hagel 1891 is there and shining. This was our second visit and we have been blown away both times. I ordered a pork tenderloin sandwich (I always have to get one when I visit the area) with waffle fries. The sandwich was excellent. I really appreciated that it wasn't a hammered out thin piece of pork 4x the size of the bun, but instead a really quality decently thick piece of fried pork. I'd order without mustard if I did it again, but it was great! The waffle fries were perfectly crispy and seasoned. My wife raved about her salad. The buildout of this place is impressive. The decor and attention to details are great. I would really call this a must visit for anyone in the area. read more

This place is my out of town "Cheers". I pass through for work somewhat regularly and this is my go to for a comfortable meal, a cold beer, and a friendly atmosphere. The staff are amazing. They have been struggling since they lost their head chef making the food less than consistent, but it seems to be getting under control. All in all, I love and recommend this place. read more

Best restaurant in town. I'm told everything is made from scratch and the chef has the freedom to cook what he likes. The menu is supposed to change frequently as well. My boyfriend and I discovered this while driving through town looking for a place to eat. What a pleasant surprise! The decor is very nice and relaxed. I love their fan system and the fireplace. Our waitress Timber was super friendly and sweet. The drinks were great, the crab cakes were AMAZING, and our entrees were excellent as well. Everything is fresh and made in house. The menu changes depending on what seasonal. It was so good we came back the next day for Sunday brunch .... which was even better than dinner the night before. My mimosa was super tasty! First time visiting tonight. Mount Sterling is out of the way for most folks, but definitely worth the trip if you're in the area. My husband and I took about an hour drive to visit Hagel and were not disappointed. A beautifully restored building that once housed a hardware store we were told. So many unique decorations and just a beautiful dining room. Service was timely and pleasant. A semi limited menu that did not disappoint. I had the most flavorful salmon with a house salad that was simple but really stood out on it's own. We ordered the bacon shrimp appetizer which was good, and my husband had the ribs which fell off the bone and had a unique barbecue sauce. The bread they bring you is to die for. A cheesy seasoned focaccia that was a star of it's own. My meal came with a baked potato that was tasty but truly I was full without it. My husbands ribs came with a side of baked ham mac and cheese that he really enjoyed. A little pricey but worth it for a unique date night. We will definitely be back. I'm giving it three stars because the parking was a very long way away, the air conditioning was way too cold even with a sweatshirt on, and the noise level was way too high in the very crowded room. Friday January 8th, 2016 I organized a get together of 11 people that I graduated high school with, we thought it would be nice to go to a hometown restaurant, especially for the ones who were living out of town now and hadn't gone before, so we had several people that were experiencing Hagel 1891 for the first time. First off I will say, this is a wonderful place to go for drinks at the bar and socializing. They have very fair priced happy hour specials and the bartender that is normally working on Friday nights is wonderful! This is a good atmosphere for small and larger parties, since we had a larger group of people we were somewhat loud, but surprisingly the restaurant wasn't very busy for a Friday evening so it didn't seem to bother anyone. For the most part everyone enjoyed their meals, there were a few people disappointed in the cost of the pasta special, as it ended up being $20/plate. If you plan on going here for an appetizer, dinner and drinks you should plan on spending at least $30-$40 per person. A few of us talked about the service being pretty slow, with their only being 1-2 other tables in the entire restaurant besides ours we expected the service to be faster. We also spoke about some of the comments that were made to our table, it just seemed a bit unprofessional for the simple fact that we brought in 11 people's business, for what would have been a slow Friday night for them if we hadn't gone. Lastly, one of the girls brought her 2 month old daughter with her, we were surprised that there weren't any highchairs available or a baby changing table in the restroom, so her options were pretty limited. Very nice restaurant, the ambiance and decor are outstanding. The wait staff is very friendly and attentive. I'd say the atmosphere is "cozy" with a 75 guest capacity but you don't feel crowded at all. It doesn't take long to figure out the chef knows his stuff. My ribeye was perfectly cooked to my "medium" preference and had a nice flavor. The chef lightly seasons the steak on the outside but prefers to let the flavor of the meat stand on its own. The natural cut fries were cooked just to perfection without being mushy and overcooked. My wife had one of the ever-changing seafood specials, in this case it was grouper with cajun seasoning and some sort of tomato chutney that exploded with flavor. I don't generally care for seafood but she shared a bit with me and it was really good. For drinks you have a ridiculous list of choices for beer and a well-stocked bar. For soft drinks they serve Pepsi products. Pricewise the most expensive item on the menu is $28. My wife and I ate there for $55 which was on the high end of the prices but I thought it was well worth it. Overall I look forward to eating there again. read more

We were seated by a drafty fireplace and asked to be seated some were else. After we were seated at a different table we sat for 15 minutes with know service what so every. Very eclectic, great furnishings, decor is excellent. Service was excellent. Excellent flatbread and smoked trout spread. We had a very pleasant previous lunch experience. We went back for dinner a couple of weeks later. The food was challenged. Too much pepper throughout. The rolls were bland and dry. The green beans were not even al dente. While trying to be high end with their presentation, they lost taste and put on extras that did not work. The dessert was very dry and not at all what was expected. Perhaps it is just the first weeks of a new restaurant but at 5:45 on a Friday night with 2 tables filled speaks volumes. Perhaps a trip to regional fine restaurants will help. Very disappointed! Passing through from NC visiting family here and for a "date night" my husband took me here not having obviously ever been himself. WAY over priced for the quality of food. The chef clearly can't stay away from making everything other than the French onion soup very spicy. We first ordered bruschetta with French onion soup to start. The bruschetta was very spicy, and loaded with garlic. Next came our salads that had fresh chunks of pepper on it. They don't tell you that until you bite into one. Then our quail that we were told was semi boneless was loaded with bones, with a poor excuse for asparagus & potatoes so spicy we couldn't even eat drenched in ketchup. My add on "loaded potato" was dry and no different than one from Wendy's. I watched the manager once we were seated waiting for our food pick what was obviously a huge wedgie. Hagel 1891 is good. Not great, but good. We made the trip from Quincy just to try Hagel. I started with a whiskey and was a little dismayed that the Glenfiddich 18 year was $8/glass while the McCallan 18 year was $35/glass. Definitely went with the Glenfiddich. Ordered the bruschetta and the chicken flatbread for appetizers. The bruschetta was amazing and very flavorful while the flatbread was soggy and bland. Would definitely go with the bruschetta in the future. The salad was very fresh and the homemade ranch dressing was good. I ordered the filet mignon medium rare, baked potato and the grilled asparagus for my entree. The filet was closer to medium with a brown sauce that didn't exactly compliment the floor. Apparently, the menu says the filet is served with a sauce, which I missed, but would've definitely ordered the steak without. Honestly, serving a filet covered in sauce is like slapping God in the face, but that's my opinion. The potato was hard, but edible. The asparagus was also ok but nothing special. I asked for horseradish but they were out of horseradish, which was also disappointing. I ordered a glass of red wine with dinner and it came chilled, also not up to par in my mind. I had to specifically request a glass of room temperature red wine, which required the bartender to go to the storage room to get a bottle. Interesting. Hagel 1891 was just ok. If I ever found myself in Mt. Sterling, I would return, but would not make the drive from Quincy again. read more

We pulled up in front of the Market today and noticed Hagel 1891 was open so we decided to give it a try while waiting for a storm to pass thru. Entrees on the dinner menu run from $15-28 while the lunch menu has items in the $10 range. I had the Chicken parmesan with a bowl of chicken vegetable soup. Everything was made from scratch including the pasta. It was all very tasty and far better then what is server at Olive Garden. My wife had the hand breaded chicken tenders with onion rings, both were very good and far more then she could eat. We will definitely be back. read more

I'll begin with...unfortunately, I decided to eat at Hagel 1891. I took my vegetarian fiance with me to try the restaurant I had heard so many great things about. I will continue with...boy, was I dissappointed. Overall, the food was bland. No seasoning. I had a crispy chicken sandwich. My fiance had the house salad. My meal came with lettuce, hers did not. (?) It also came with about half a red onion worth of slices, as well. I donated half my lettuce to my poor fiance and her lettuceless salad. The chicken breast was dry and overcooked, and had no sauce of any kind ( Mayo, ranch, etc.) It was a very dry sandwich. No seasoning, no sauce, overcooked chicken. And that wasn't the worst part. The service, while inattentive, was also slow, and unconcerned with making even a token effort to show pride in their work, or to bother with how my meal was going. I have a close friend who works there and who spoke highly of the restaurant...again, unfortunately, he and I were mistaken. I am forced to give a star, where none are deserved. read more

Was there Friday evening November 7th, no waitress approached me for at least 5 minutes, they were at the bar visiting. Finally waitress came and took my drink order, wine was very good. Waitress came back after another stop at the bar to visit and took my order, I ordered the porcetta. On the menu the porcetta was described as "pork loin wrapped in pork belly and slow roasted" served with roasted potatoes and asparagus, sounded wonderful. The salad arrived and was placed in front of me, almost immediately the busboy or kitchen attendant arrived with my entree. Realizing I just started my salad the young man asked if I wanted him to hold the entree in the kitchen to keep warm until I finished my salad. Yes, I said( I was impressed with his customer service skills). Upon finishing my salad the same young man asked if I was ready for the entree, "yes please". The young man brought it out, placed it in front of me, long last to taste the porcetta, it was cold. It was not pretty at all, there was no pork loin on the skillet only pork belly which was a grey color. The roasted potatoes were tasty but cold, the asparagas was cold and under cooked. In the mean time no one came by to check on me, I tasted the cold pork belly and could not eat it, ate the cold roasted potatoes, left most of the asparagus. The waitress dropped the ticket off at the table, by this time I wanted out of there. I paid with cash left it on the table. No one came by to see if I enjoyed my dinner or if there was anything else they could get me. I realize that this is a brand new restaurant and they are still working out the kinks, so I won't say "I will never go back". I will give them another chance but I will wait awhile and try it for lunch. The building is beautiful, but I prefer real plates and table cloths to skillets and unpressed bar towels for napkins. for lunch I can do casual.
