I have grown up in Rockford my whole life and this was my first time ever coming to Hai Quynh. You could really say it's a staple for southeast asian cuisine in Rockford since it's been here for a very long time. I wish I would have came here sooner. The food is so delicious. The pho has great aromatics and depth of flavor that just hits the spot. We had an array of appetizers such as egg rolls, fresh spring rolls, and of course crab rangoon which did not disappoint. We also had quail and other noodle dishes. On top of the food, they have amazing boba teas at their boba shop in the back called Tien tea house. The servers were really nice and the service was good. The servers get busy so you might have to stop them if they walk pass you if you need anything. Such as condiments or drink refills. The ambiance makes you feel like you are in Chinatown Chicago and you know the food is going to be delicious. Overall, this place gives me authentic feels, amazing food, and refreshing boba teas. We needed up getting take out, and it was well packaged, plus they provided all the yummy sides. We got crab Rangoon, Spring Rolls, beef pho, and chicken pho. The best pho I've ever tasted! Super flavorful broth and everything tasted amazing. They even make their own meatballs from scratch, which was very delicious and a shockingly good surprise. All of the pho places I've been to never made their own meatballs, so this place really stood out and impressed me. With the way everything tasted, I feel like it shows that they care about the quality of the food they're serving. Delicious food from a good local spot. You can dine in or carry out. The inside is a bit dated but it works for the limited space they have. Takeout has been good, just sometimes hit or miss on how long it takes. They told me 15-20 minutes today and it took almost 30. Wouldn't be a problem if we were in a hurry but we were. I have been here a couple times and it is always so delicious and fresh. The staff are welcoming, friendly, and helpful. There's a large selection of delicious boba teas and refresher fruit teas on the menu which are my absolute favorite! I usually get two , one to drink there and one to take home haha The first time I ate here I had a delicious meat and veggie dish, I can't recall the name but it was SO good! Most recently with the cold weather sticking around I decided to go with pho. I chose a seafood pho and the portion size was massive and so super tasty. You can taste the freshness of the ingredients in every bite. I had leftovers to take home and warm up for two meals. At that time I chose the strawberry matcha tea with boba and a peach refresher tea to go. Both drinks were perfection. Writing this I am looking forward to going back and eating/ drinking again. I was really craving Pho. This place had decent reviews. There was no one in the place when we walked but were greeted right away. Egg rolls were very fresh and delicious. Pho was sooo good! One of the better broths I have had. Lemon grass chicken was more spicy and the lemon grass flavor was missing but it was good for spicy chicken. I will say they should clean the fish tanks. That was not pleasant to look at while eating. If you are some one who like a super squeaky clean place you might want to skip sitting in and order out. read more

The PHO is top notch in the city. I choose this restaurant for pho over any other. The staff is always very friendly and the ambiance is very down to earth and comfortable/relaxed. Not fancy or upscale by any means but when you go here, it's not for the ambiance. It's for the phenomenal pho. Also. The spring rolls and crab ragoons are #1 in the city. I am not sure if this restaurant would be considered a "hidden gem" considering the many recommendations from colleagues. But you will be surprised by the quality of the food here. There is definitely more than meets the eye. Passing through Rockford's Mid-Town District, you will find this restaurant sandwiched between a housing complex and a nail salon. It can be easy to miss, since half of its facade has signs to play the Illinois Lottery. However, keep your eyes peeled for this restaurant for it has a sensational menu. The iced tea was not the common fountain drink tea you usually receive at other restaurants (one of my new favorites in the Rockford area). The waiter was kind enough to explain the different noodle options for the Seafood Noodles, which were great. All in all, amazing food and service. The interior can be considered "outdated" but then again, the owner(s) may want to keep that old school vibe. I will be back. read more

In this updated review, I'm only giving the restaurant four stars because the banh xeo came out a little mushier than it did before. The spring rolls are a never-fail though. Mmmmm. In regards to the décor: yes, sometimes people are smoking in the back, and maybe it's a little "grittier" than Kuma's or Lung Fung etc, but I think that adds to the appeal of the restaurant. First off let me just say that the entrance of this place is quite pretty with all the plants, even fish tank was a nice touch. The phō was very delicious and had lots of add-ins included when you got it as take out. The dim sum appetizer and spring rolls had a great taste as well. I always come here at least once a week to get my Pho fix. My buddies from work tried this place and loves it. He now comes to this spot with me every time we swing by. We call this place the mom and pop shop because there's a old Asian guy that looks like his Christmas got stolen, serves us the water and a hot bowl of delicious pho. Then the lady that works at the back cooking the food, snapping in Vietnamese to the guy so he can hurry up and serve the customers. Walked in the door after seeing good reviews for some take out. Walked in the door into a dark room with a big cloudy fish tank standing in front of me. Gross! A man was mopping the floor with filthy water that stunk. Bigger gross! I asked if they were actually open. The man said "yes, what you want?" Very rude! Lol. I said "take out pho", and he handed me a menu and walked away. I nearly left at that point. However, after glancing at the menu, I decided on the chicken pho. Said rude man took my order and disappeared (to make my meal...I hope he washed his hands), and came back some time later with a bag he handed to me and walked away. Oh boy!!! Ran out to my ambulance and opened the package, and to my delight was a clean, fresh, clear and tastefully delicious chicken pho that I enjoyed immensely. I will never eat at this place, but I will definitely be back for more takeout, and maybe Mr. Happy will be in a better mood. Well worth the wait and rude service. LOL read more

I haven't been here for maybe 5 years? But I wanted to try it again. I remember having the best pho here. The others have the looks of the place. We ordered the Vietnamese crepe to split. It was a litte greasy, but still tasty. I ordered the combo meal, with a pork chop, chinese sausage (two types), egg with 3 shrimp, rice, salad, and pork skin. It was excellent. The pork chop had a yummy marinate on it, and it was tender with a great sear crust on the outside. Both sausages were tasty. Even the egg was good and fluffy. I wasn't a fan of the pork skin. The meal was missing a bowl of broth and pickled veg. My mom ordered the rice noodles, crispy with beef. It was top notch. The noodles(like chow fun size) were excellent with a nice crisp layer, lots of veg, thinly sliced beef, and a sweet gravy. I would order this myself. I will be back! Don't be snob, because I wouldn't like you, and you won't get this place. read more

We used to live one block up from this place on 7th St. and I would still risk getting shot or mugged to eat here. Just go during the day time if you are concerned about such things. It is worth it. The Pho broth is a generational broth and it amazing. Order any of the soups and you will be pleased. All of the meats that come on sticks are great too. Fried rice? Delicious.
