Based on a previous review about Nikki, I decided to give Hair Flair a try. I was greeted nicely by Nicole at the front desk. Nikki followed shortly thereafter and also greeted me nicely and with a big smile. I told her I was there due to a great review by someone who mentioned that Nikki actually listened to her customers. Yesssss....she listened to me and also made a suggestion to add bangs, which I accepted. I am extremely happy with my new cut and style. I've always had a great experience here when my usual stylist is available. Unfortunately, during my last visit, she wasn't in, and I was seen by the older lady at the front. The service felt rushed, with several spots missed and little attention to detail. It was disappointing compared to my past visits. I hope the salon can address this so all stylists provide the same high standard of care. She should not be allowed to cut hair. read more

I have been going to the fanciest of places paying stupid high prices because I thought I'd be more likely to get what I wanted. After being disappointed time and time again, I figured I'd come here and try to let Nikki do my hair. She has done my sons and he loves her - needless to say I paid half of what I normally did I actually got exactly what I asked for. The vibe was great, so much fun talking with her, she explained what she was doing and why each step which was so helpful for me and gives you an opportunity to clarify to make sure you're getting what you want - which she knew and did. She is so incredibly capable and my extra blonde blonde hair is perfect!!!! I am sooo happy with it and will never be going anywhere else. read more

I hate to give such a poor review to this place, but I can't help it. It seemed as if every stylist here was having a great time with their clients; laughing, talking, being personable. Then there was my stylist...first of all she seemed very ticked that I took her away from her book. Furthermore, contrary to the other ladies working there this particular stylist seemed to have a personal thunder cloud following her everywhere she went, like a cartoon character, all joy was sucked from a two foot radius from her. I have to admit, she gave me a decent haircut, but going to a hair salon is as much about the experience as it is about the final product. I felt like a nuisance, not a customer, and I really feel that if I had a different stylist my experience would have been much more positive. read more

So if you are in or near the area and need a quick cut, this isn't a bad place to go. Wasn't busy at all... ...Now I normally only post super positive reviews but the lady who did my hair was at first acting like she didn't know what a scissor cut was for almost like 8 minutes. ...All I asked for was for my overall length to be 3 inches on top and an inch and a half on the sides.(everywhere else when I ask for this they say cool sounds good and does it in a couple of minutes) So finally after she asked me multiple times if she could use the clippers and I politely said that I prefer the scissor cut and have done it like that for years she almost looked like she hated her life and rolled her eyes... ..Finally when paying for the cut, she said "for future reference I could have gotten you the same look with the clippers." But to be honest.. and I don't do hair myself but I'm pretty sure the overall look of a scissor cut compared to a buzz cut/clipper cut looks and feels different from each other. Regardless, even if it would have looked the same, they were not busy, no line out the door or anything at all so there was no reason for her acting like that.. Plus if a customer asks for something to be done to their hair.. the employee should probably listen to them and do their job with a smile. Then if they want to complain just wait until I leave at least before you have an attitude and or that hating your job and life mentality. It doesn't do good for the businesses reputation. Personally I would like to come back but I will not if she's working there. Btw my hair wasn't even that long lmao. It's not like I had hair down to my shoulders hahaha. Hopefully I'll be back but I doubt it.. :/ super sad because all the other place were all packed and busy. Forgot to say the neat thing is they do walk-ins which is cool but like I said, please read all of the above before making your decision. Overall, great experience. I walked in and was able to be seated right away. Kathy was my stylist - very friendly and "hat fashionable". For only $11, it exceeded my expectation. Updated 1/29/18 - I've been back a few times since my review. The experience was not the same as the first. Haircuts have been ok, but staff seems miserable. They aren't rude, but not all that friendly. I always tip well, but this last time I probably shouldn't have. Seems the younger stylists have the attitude problem. read more

My friend and I came to the place because we needed our hair done for our boyfriends' brother's wedding. We didn't want to spend a fortune since we weren't in the wedding party but were still in a lot of family pictures. Most places I called in the area were either out of business or laughed out loud when I asked for a Saturday appointment four days in advance. Hair Flair not only took us at the time we wanted, but quoted us prices that were about half of what other places did. (Updos starting at $45? Yes please.) Our stylist was Cinnamon, who took us a couple minutes early and was very friendly and seemed to care about what we wanted done. Cinnamon did my hair very similarly to the way I requested it- french braid over the top and then invented some twisty-things in the back. It looked nice and I could tell she cared about what she was doing because when she first started doing it, she stopped and said she didn't like it and started again. I definitely want a hairstylist that doesn't just do her work to get it done and actually cares how the client looks. This place is no-frills, and that's ok. Don't come here if you are expecting fanciness. But we just wanted quick updos, and Hair Flair delivered. In response to reviewer Alan C., I think I know the exact stylist you are talking about. She wasn't our stylist, but she just radiated an attitude. When we walked in to "check in" at the counter to let them know we were here, she didn't even look at me or greet me. After an awkward pause, I told her we were here for our appointments and she just kind of looked at me disdainfully and said, "Ok. Sit down." Just seemed like she didn't want to be there. When we went to pay, I was pleasantly surprised- I was charged $35 and my friend was charged $25 because Cinnamon said we didn't get anything too intricate done. When is a price LESS than the quoted price? I was extremely pleased and two days later, my hair is actually still in place. I was extremely happy because after paying DC and NYC prices my whole life, $35 for a pretty updo is a steal. Will definitely be back any time I am in Outer Banks! read more

I got one of their $9 hair cuts and it was great. I just needed a trim and I am tired of paying $40 for a haircut that takes minimal effort. Hair Flair did a good job and my hair looks great. Maybe if you are looking for a particular style, Hair Flair is not for you. But it's great for the basics and a good value. I walked in and was seated right way. I live in KDH NC and have been here many times- always good cut- and the price is right! Plus you can walk in and be seen quickly- as I want my hair cut when I want it cut- and some other shops have to "work you in". Very good value for the price and location read more

I was visiting OBX and a friend recommended I go see Kendra to fix my botched hair. The stylist that was in the chair next to Kendra, whom I was later told was the owner, (really?) finally acknowledged me after I stood there for a few minutes. I said Hi, what time does Kendra come into work? Snooty attitude reply was I don't know-and then asked another employee what time she worked (and you don't know when your employees are supposed to work?). I did get to see Kendra and she did work magic restyling my hair. She was great. I would recommend Kendra in a heartbeat. I just hope the owner recognizes that first impressions are important to new clients,even if we are tourists! read more

Called in the morning and made an appointment for myself and my sister on July 3rd. Showed up, was seated within 5m. The stylists were very nice and easy to converse with. I had my cut done in about 15m and it was exactly how I described it to her. The price per cut was 11$, and 5$ for a wash. Great price, very satisfied, and very nice people! read more

I've been here a few times, and my experience has been similar to Alan's, but with more than one stylist. One in particular--about a year ago--was especially rude with me for no reason when I was discussing how I wanted my hair cut. Basically, the same situation Alan describes--I was a nuisance taking her away from bigger and better things. Other encounters with stylists haven't been this bad, but have still been uncomfortable and awkward due to a general air of gruffness. I don't know what it is about this place, but I've never felt welcome and have decided I won't be returning in the future. The hair cuts are fine and I don't require a bunch of small talk or ass kissing, but I shouldn't feel like an unwanted guest when I'm paying them to cut my hair and that's clearly the vibe I get most of the time I'm there. read more

I am not one of those types of people who go around complaining or writing poor reviews. I've never sent food back or not tipped for poor service, but I have to say something about my experience here or rather my 14 year old daughter's experience. I live here and I have a regular stylist at a different establishment, but on my way out of town yesterday, my daughter wanted to get her hair trimmed before she went to Raleigh for a big end of summer party with all her friends. We stop in Hair Flair and the stylist that greets us was a very sweet older woman who told us to have a seat, they could fit us right in. However the stylist that actually took my daughter was a whole different story. I echo the words of the previous reviewer. She seemed angry that we were there. Had a flippant attitude when my daughter showed her a very simple photo and only looked at it for 2 seconds. Then she proceeded to rip through her thick, dry mid-back length hair, flip up random pieces and hack away, never checking the evenness or shape. The one time she looked at the front my daughter looked down at the same time and after chastising her, she continued to hack away without ever checking again. The photo had long chin length bangs and so when she got ready to cut those, she held up a chunk of hair at her eyebrows and said, "Here?" My daughter said, "Umm, no longer please." She dropped her fingers a half inch and whacked off another chunk before even asking again if that was the right length. Then said she needed to train those, and did not show her how, nor did she style it. My daughter went straight to the car while I paid (in this instance wishing I had not tipped her over 20%!). I got in the car and my daughter was devastated, with huge alligator tears not only from the pain of the stylist (And that's a generous title) ripping through her hair, but at the huge chunk of hair missing from the side and the weird chunk of short hair in the front that were supposed to be called bangs. Incidentally during this fiasco another sweet young girl came in asking for highlights and this same stylist treated her the same way. Irritated that she was there and annoyed that she would even think about getting highlights. She reluctantly made her an appointment for 3:00 that afternoon, I hope her experience was better. Needless to say, I called the salon (as we were driving out of town)and spoke to Cinnamon, the manager. She was very apologetic and kind and offered to fix my daughters hair at no charge. I declined, as I will never set foot in this salon again. If you decide to go here, do not let Kendra cut your hair, she should not be in a service based business, nor should she be cutting hair. read more

I just experienced the worst case of someone NOT listening to what the customer wanted and wound up with a so called haircut that was worse than what I didn't want. I explained, in detail, what I wanted cut and how. My instructions were completly disregarded. Instead of using the scissors, she grabbed the clippers and proceeded to scalp me because it was easier than taking her time and following the customer's instructions. Yes they only charge $9 for a haircut but it should still be cut the way the person paying described. I don't care if the haircuts were free, I will never use this establishment again. Just like if a pile of crap were free I still wouldn't want it. Stylist...HA! Butcher is more like it. read more

Ive been going to Hair Flair for a few years and have had my hair cut by most of the current stylists. Ive always had a good experience and feel that they do quality work. My kids and husband have also had their hair cut there as well and no complaints. Its not a fancy salon by any means but the cuts Ive received there equal what I have received at more expensive salons and only for $9 to $11!! read more
