The first time I laid eyes on the elegant lights and "natural" decor at Hala Forum, I was entranced. And then I saw the brightly lit sign that said "Food Hall," turned inside, and gasped in amazement. The food court at this mixed use bar, beer garden, and recreation center housed a huge variety of food vendors, covering all cuisines from Middle Eastern to American, Indian, Vietnamese, Thai, Italian, and more (perhaps with the glaring exception of Polish cuisine). The first stop on my food tour was Mazaya, where I ordered the "Super" plate, which came with five falafels dressed in tahini sauce, along with a creamy hummus dressed with olive oil and pomegranate seeds; thin slices of pita bread; a fresh parsley salad; cucumber pickles; radish pickles; and sliced tomatoes. Every item on this plate was so fresh and delicious, but my favorite component was definitely the falafel, which were perfectly crispy, moist, and herbaceous. The falafels were perfect for dipping into the hummus, and I also got a side of their red chili sauce, which added an amazing spicy flavor to every bite. For stop number two, I went to the Masala Roll Factory for Indian street food. The Chicken Kathi Roll came with grilled chicken in a boldly spiced curry sauce, along with chutneys and grilled vegetables including green bell peppers and onions. The fillings were wrapped in a thick Indian flatbread, which was also layered on the inside with a scrambled egg. The flavors of the Kathi Roll and the falafels were simply incredible--I could not get over how amazing both of these dishes were, and the food came at an unbelievable value too! read more
