I had no idea that henequen (or rope, sisal) played such an intregal role in the history and economy of the Yucatan. The hacienda (agave/henequen plantation) was fully restored with original and functional equipment, we saw demonstrations of every process from manual to machine. Our tour guide Juan was passionate in sharing the henequen history and effortlessly transitioned between spanish and english. Included in the tour, towards the end, we took a ride through the plantation on carts pulled by burrows on the old tracks. They eventually led us to a gorgeous cenote where we cooled off, had a margarita made from the plantations agave, and finished our visit. There is also a chapel, restuarant, and villas located on thr property. DO NOT MISS!! Hacienda Sotuta de Peon, thank you-you're truly top notch!

We loved it! It was nice and cool inside and the waiters were all super friendly. I got what they called "el paquete mixto" which was a special that came with sopa de lima, a mix of pork (cochinita) and chicken, and some fresh fruit as dessert. The place really made me feel welcome, and I highly recommend it any tourist. It's super convenient if you're visiting the ruins of Uxmal.

The service and interior are great and let me tell ya there is no better feeling than a well air conditioned and circulated room after sweating your a$$ off for hours from the Yucatan humidity. Our meal started off with a collection of bread and a delicious green melon agua fresca. We were then served consomé de pollo (chicken soup), grilled Yucatán chicken with beans and rice, and flan. The assortment of bread didn't look the most fresh so I ended up not trying it. The agua fresca was probably my most favorite part of my meal - exactly what I needed to cool off. The grilled yucatan chicken tasted almost like tandoori! It was a low on salt, but well flavored. The flan's texture wasn't smooth and it was room temperature, so it wasn't something I really enjoyed. The total price with our package deal ended up being 40 pesos - so excellent pricing! The server was very helpful and attentive. I really appreciated another server preparing coffee for me despite being closed!

See my original (2014) review below. We returned with out-of-town friends in 2016 and explored a…read morelittle more, touring the small on-site Mayan ruins and getting to know some of the staff. We're looking forward to spending a few days at Las Aguilas again in 2018. -- We booked three nights for our trip around the Yucatan Peninsula in January, based on Trip Advisor reviews and photos. As noted elsewhere, Las Aguilas is not anywhere near the city of Oxkutzcab (just in the district of the same name), and it is way past the tiny village of Xul, on a road to nowhere, so it is far from the ideal location to explore the Ruta Puuc or shop in the local market towns. As a consequence, we spent a lot more time driving on torn-up dirt roads than we had planned. For the Ruta Puuc, we recommend The Pickled Onion in Santa Maria. That said, however, we found that we were the only guests in a very large compound, and the spa and restaurant were as advertised. Everybody we had any contact with was friendly and helpful without being obtrusive. For around $50 USD per night, we had a two bedroom, two bath cottage on a paved street. There was a kitchen but no stove or refrigerator, so we took breakfast and dinner in the restaurant. All meals were very good, relying for the most part on products grown or made on-site: milk, cheese, eggs, honey, fruits and vegetables. Most people we met were Italian, and yes, you can easily get a good cappuccino, a decent pizza (not up to New York standards but remarkable for a remote location off the grid in the middle of the jungle!), and Italian and Chilean wines at reasonable prices. Everybody speaks Spanish, most speak Italian, and quite a few speak at least some English. The spa treatments, too, were very good and reasonably priced. They have a very clean swimming pool, and you can visit their dairy farm and cheese factory. We didn't have a chance to tour the grounds, see the artificial lake, etc., but would opt to do so next time we're in the area. If you live in Merida or Campeche or Valladolid, this place would be a great weekend getaway, with wholesome food, spa treatments, and freedom from traffic, media, etc., at a tiny fraction of the price of equivalent services on the Mayan Riviera.
