Cork Opera House's hipper, edgier younger sibling, the Half Moon Theatre is a studio space created as part of the 1993 upgrade project for the main Opera House, and designed as a supporter of the more experimental range of interdisciplinary projects, predominantly mixing music with comedy. What this means is that it is the venue for that trendy comedian you want to see, or that new band everyone's raving about, that amazing circus or burlesque act you saw on the internet, or those guys who hang upside-down in a vat of custard for three hours in the name of art. Situated behind the Opera House, the Half Moon is deceptively large; big enough to comfortably fit a large number of people, but small enough that it doesn't have that "empty" feeling of larger venues. As there are generally larger acts performing in the Half Moon, the door charge tends to be more expensive than most other late-night venues; however, this is generally borne out by the superior quality of the entertainment and always worth the few euro extra. read more
