Mother's Day Dinner and was particularly not busy at this time. Our server disappeared many times. Order was messed up and it took 15 minutes for two dinner salads to come out after all others food was delivered. I dont leave many unhappy reviews. But we visited on Mothers Day at 4:30. We had a little wait which was expected. We were seated at our table for about 15 minutes before someone came to our table. They must have a staff shortage because the restaurant was half empty. Interesting note, they played a Christmas song, We Three Kings. Its May 11. But the food came and all was well. We've dined here at least 10 times since this location opened in Trussville. Our food has always been very good, however there's been a couple of issues that we've experienced more times than not when dining here. It's not usually for them to "forget" salads and or side dishes. Also, their bar seems to always be understaffed during peak times, with very long wait times for drinks. read more

I loved the Tuna Esplanade* Sashimi grade Yellowfin tuna blackened and served over a jalapeño lime hollandaise. Topped with fried artichoke hearts, red onion, and Parmesan cheese. I got it seared. I needed to refresh my review. On my most recent visit , I sat at the bar. The service was friendly and the bartender checked on me often. I ate light on this visit. Half dozen of char oysters and a cup of seafood gumbo. I enjoyed my food. The one tv they have was on the WNBA game , so that was perfect! The manager here is great! I'm was so exited to go to Half Shell. I was eager to get the Orleans Chargrilled Oysters. Ordered the 'Orleans' had to send them back to cook longer because they weren't chargrilled as they typically are. The Seafood Pot Pie did not disappoint me, it was flavorful. We also ordered a Seafood Platter and the Mahi was very dry. My server was very dry. After he brought the food to the table his attitude changed, which was a relief. My happy medium was the Seafood Pot Pie. I was anticipating more, because the food is generally AMAZING. I hope there can be a next time that's a lot better. read more

The Ambiance is really nice. The servers were really nice once they came to our table. It did take a while to get our drinks but to be fair, I don't think they had a lot of lunchtime servers on hand. Our food was quite good. We started with the crab claws. Nicely done but I would have appreciated something other than cocktail sauce. An aioli? A tartar? Not everyone likes cocktail. But they were still excellent with a spritz of lemon. Should you order the asparagus side, I recommend asking for the gorgonzola butter on the side. Mine came with 2 dollops which drowned the delicate asparagus in the rather aggressive flavor of gorgonzola. I had the bananas foster cheesecake for something a little bit different. My husband had the cherry cheesecake. Both were good. We had 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts and lunch broke about $100. But this is seafood and our app was crab. Everyone knows seafood is expensive so go in expecting that. That being said, they offered a variety of seafood and non-seafood options that could satisfy many. Place a to-go order over the phone for a bowl of seafood gumbo. They do have an option of placing your order online too. I was told my order would be ready at the bar in 10 minutes. I was craving a hearty bowl of gumbo and the side of town I live on there's not many options at all. I was hoping for a gumbo ya-ya but Half Shell only offers seafood which consisted of shrimp, crawfish, and crab meat. That should've been a red flag for me but I proceeded. When I walked in, the restaurant was busy at all for a Saturday evening. Went to the bar and told the bartender my name. She gave me my receipt to pay. As I waited for my order, I saw a waiter reach behind the bar grabbed some crackers, opened them and proceeded to eat them while walking around the dinning area. I thought, maybe he's on break....wrong. This young man was still waiting tables walking around eating and did not wash his hands at all!! Another red flag for me. I understand everyone has to eat (when they can) but at least don't make it known and for goodness sake WASH YOUR HANDS!! I get in the car check my bag only to be disappointed at the size/price of the gumbo. I get home and opened the container only to smell something burnt. I stirred the gumbo up and it did have a burnt flavor to it. The probably burnt the roux. My daughter walks in and said "mom what's that smell, it stinks". I just looked at her and I said I know.
