Charging $100 to change strings and make a quick adjustment on the neck as well as it taking up to five business days is ridiculous. It takes less than 5 to 10 minutes to change strings on a guitar. I will not be bringing my instrument there any longer. At least at the Halifax location. I'm in sales and they can do better.

I tried dealing with other music stores but did not have the service or support I have received from the excellent staff at any Long and MacQuade stores in Ontario and now retired still buying at their music stores in Nova Scotia . Stephen Dempster is very knowledgeable and Passionate about the guitar, music and his students. His rates are cheaper than I was paying at Long and McQuade and the program is stellar. In addition to lessons, he provides many workshops and even a FREE guitar "gym" every week. He has a great website and is always adding more resources for students (such as access to him over Skype for practice help). If you are interested in becoming a better guitar player - at any level or want to make sure your child is set up to succeed give him a call. If you are a beginner I would call him before even buying an instrument. Before I even started, he had me come to the studio for a FREE consultation to understand better what I wanted to achieve and also explain how he approaches instruction. I have a long way to go, but I am a better "musician" as a result of Stephen's mentoring and it's been a fun process along the way.

Words to the wise: The Sonic Temple is a dream venue for music lovers. While it typically exists as…read morea recording studio for artists, The Temple occasionally houses live performances within its walls. So. If ever you catch wind of a show happening at The Sonic Temple, be sure to grab up on tickets ASAP. Its an experience! The space is quite small, housing just under 70 people, so performances are intimate, engaged and high quality. The A-frame ceiling of this 1820s heritage home sets up an epic shelter with hanging candle holders and sky lights to boot. More candles scatter around the walls and ledges, highlighting gorgeous brick walls and its backdrop behind the 'stage'. (More of a large carpet then an actual stage.) Its part of the Sonic Entertainment building on Hollis street and not a venue that is open to the public on the regular. Thats why you've got to keep your ears open! The Temple is built by artists, for artists as a place of solitude to facilitate the recording process. Maritime artists like Joel Plaskett, Matt Mays, Symphony Nova Scotia have all recorded here. (to name a few!) Who knows when the next show will be... ('Post Data' just held a show there March 7 & 8th) but to have this place on your radar is certainly not a bad idea. And if you're a musician looking to master an album, The Sonic Temple is the cream of the crop. An incredible use of space to draw inspiration from both artist and audience...

The Conservatory is a one-stop shop for lessons in all things musical--voice, piano, instruments,…read moreand dance. Housed in an old school on Chebucto Road, the setting itself is a bit shabby chic. You get the feeling the place was grander back in the day and perhaps shows its wear a bit. The classrooms have high ceilings and large windows, giving the learning spaces and dance studios a nice feel. I will say the Performance Hall is an awesome and beautiful space for recitals and concerts. These folks take their music seriously. All of the musical instructors have extensive musical education and experience and many of them perform with local arts organizations. That being said, the Conservatory is a place for everyone, beginners, hoobyists and more serious students. The prices are not inexpensive, but you get what you pay for. My daughter is currently enrolled in her first year of piano lessons and after just six weeks, the children are being given an opportunity to perform at the department Hallowe'en party. She might not be Beethoven but being given an opportunity to perform means that she can get used to playing in front of others at an early age. Her instructor teaches good technique and is very personable and, best of all, motivating in a friendly way. The Conservatory to me at least seems to emphasize a more classical approach to performance so if you're looking to join a rock band maybe you would take lessons elsewhere.
