I get many compliments when I wear my custom shirts out on the town. They use premium cotton makers like Thomas Mason and those were only $250 a shirt. I've seen custom Thomas Mason shirts go for $700 and the construction was not quite as exquisite as Hall Madden's. Also the design details are thorough. The suits I have fit perfectly. Booking fittings always very easy with their website. When I send an email they are always very quick to respond. Service is great and professional. Excited to write the first review for Hall Madden formerly Proper Suit! The shoes that they have added (note not custom) are very high end and my boyfriend who only has Allen Edmonds actually said they were better. I got my boyfriend a new suit for all the weddings we have to go to and he left so impressed during the first fitting. He had 2 fittings both with McGregor to ensure fit and McGregor did a good job of explaining everything that goes into a suit so he could make the best one for him. It took about 6 weeks from the first fitting to being able to take it home with us so definitely plan ahead. Prices are so reasonable compared to what you get elsewhere. When you need a good looking suit, going off-the-rack can take a lot of time to find something that fits like it was made for you (if you ever find it at all). Because off-the-rack suits aren't cut for you, specifically. I know this because in my previous life working as a CPA -- with a broad shoulder and narrow-waist build -- it was certainly an arduous task to find a suit with the fit I wanted. Now have 2 suits that look perfect in the professional setting or to wear on an evening date, networking event etc. I also picked up 2 casual unstructured blazers from Hall Madden as well that look great with denim, in both a casual/sophisticated kind of way. In my view, the product leans more European and I love the minimal and understated custom features of the jackets. As someone who has tested 4 different shoulder constructions in my jackets, I can attest that McGregor, Richard and the other fit specialists do a good job managing expectations of the styles but also cutting the suits correctly for different styles. I really enjoy the suits from Hall Madden and I think people need to understand that you can spend a lot of money on clothes and still get sub optimal gear. From my research, Hall Madden prices are very reasonable when you see how much work and service goes into it. Price is what you pay, value is what you get; and Hall Madden suits are a good value relative to the price. Let me tell you why these guys are five stars? 1. Multiple fittings to ensure satisfaction (my dad needed a round of alterations on his first suit). When I went with my brother during his fit check he absolutely loved it which was surprising since he is very picky. 2. I could not be more impressed with Hall Madden and McGregor's attention to exact detail when making me a custom three piece Zenga suit. Fit was absolutely perfect. I honestly did not want to take the suit off when I tried it on but I have to save it for my wedding. This is my first custom suit and I will always go to Hall Madden moving forward. McGregor sees details on fit that are way beyond my capabilities. You know he wants you to look great and he takes the extra time and effort to ensure that. The Process: At the fist appointment I tried on a couple suits for fit. Not going to lie, I loved the sample suit I tried on. McGregor made adjustments and ordered me a test suit. About three weeks later the test suit came in and was nearly perfect. He made a few more adjustments and ordered my official Zenga suit. The suit came in three weeks later looking gorgeous and it fit perfectly. He was almost more excited than me about the way it looked and fit. That is how you know loves what he does. My suits up to this point have either been mix-and-matched off the rack, or eBay purchases that I had tailored to me after the fact. This worked great... when I was a thrifty student. With my wedding coming up, I decided I wanted to look as good as possible. Thanks to liberal internet searching and the help of r/malefashionadvice, I narrowed down my options and decided to give ProperSuit a try. I live in SF and I wanted the personal touch that comes with actually being face to face with someone, rather than ordering somewhat blind online through a place like Indochino. So I place my reservation for a fitting and head up to Firehouse 8 when the time comes. Max greets me outside, he looks super sharp himself, which immediately goes a long way to making me feel like I'm in good hands. I explain I want a suit for my wedding, but it needs to be something I can wear in the future, as well. Something that will become an indispensable part of my dress wardrobe. He has me put on my dress shirt and shoes which I brought along, and gets to work getting my measurements. Max is very thorough and has me try on a bunch of sample pants and jackets. I've already downloaded the style guide from the website and printed out a cheat sheet with my preferences and questions, so we run through all the options and eventually I select a material, color, and buttons. He did a great job explaining the differences between types of wool and providing his input on color based on what I told him about my plans. The fitting room was cool - great view of the bay, and very spare. Max said they were going to build the space out a bit, but I actually liked that it was so simple - there were no pretensions. My one and only gripe is that the 1-hour appointment felt just slightly too short, and I could tell Max had a packed schedule. Luckily this had no adverse effect on my experience. 6 weeks later, my suit arrives at my apartment. I try it on and it looks pretty good to me, but Max said to schedule a final fit check appointment with him to make sure, so I do that. We take a look at it together and it fits just about perfectly, no need for any adjustments. Now, this is my first made to measure experience. Might it seem a more loose, unprofessional experience to those who are on a first name basis with their tailor and have already had a number of suits made? Sure, possibly. But I personally was impressed by Max's professionalism, friendliness, and advice, and the suit looks fantastic. McGregor is excellent! I've never had a properly (see what I did there) fitting suit and being that I'm an adult now, figured it was time to do so. The fittings are one on one so you get full attention to your suiting needs. McGregor will let you pick all the details you want, but will also give some style advice as well. He can suit anyone. I'm a bigger guy so store bought suits are always good in the shoulders but big around the waist. Well, McGregor fixed that problem and now my suit FITS. I'll go no where else for my suits and blazers. Appointment only. I like that because it's professional and you get his full attention. Once he has your cut, you can then order more suits and the turn around is fast. There is even a second fitting just to make sure everything is perfect. I came to Proper Suit after reading positive reviews in Business Insider and Wired and checking them out on Yelp. I was looking to up my closet selection past the basic black Hugo Boss I've had for 5 years and the random discount rack Express suits I wear when having a drink spilled on you becomes a likelihood (i.e in Vegas). I was trying to get a suit in time for an upcoming wedding, and McGregor worked with me to quickly figure out a fitting appointment time. He is very responsive via e-mail, which is critical for an on-the-go person in Silicon Valley, and we were quickly able to figure something out. Not far into the fitting process, I was already impressed. It's obvious that McGregor has been in the industry for a while and knows what he's talking about. The fact that he could help me -- generally a very indecisive and mildly obsessive-compulsive person -- efficiently select materials, colors, and patterns is a testament to his knowledge of the product and also what styles work well for what individuals. When the week of the wedding came, my suit was stuck in customs, and it didn't look like it would make it to CA in time for my flight out. McGregor worked with his back office to have it shipped directly to my hotel, where it was waiting for me when I arrived. I took it up to my room and immediately tried it on to see how it fit. My father likes to use the phrase "you look like a million bucks." I have to say, looking at myself in my new suit for the first time, that's exactly how I felt. It fit great, the quality of workmanship was great, the materials were great, and I felt great wearing it to the wedding, reception, and after-party. I've purchased a couple of suits from Proper Suit, and both are absolutely amazing. I've never had a bespoke suit until now, and had no idea what the process was for having one made. I saw the pop-up event to get measured in Washington DC and scheduled an appointment. The process was easy, and was done electronically. The fitting was held at The Fairfax on Embassy Row in DC. McGregor walked me through the process and took my measurements. The amount of options is staggering, but you don't feel overwhelmed. Perusing through beautiful fabric books and identifying every detail that you want makes the process engaging and fun. Prefer 5 buttons to four buttons on the sleeve? They can do that. Want a notch lapel instead of a peak or shawl lapel? They can do that. Single vent vs double vent? They can do that. McGregor paid close attention to the fit around my shoulders and thighs. I never really focused on those areas previously as all of my other suits had been purchased off the rack. When I finally received my first suit a few weeks later, I was blown away by how much of a difference those areas made. The trousers feel amazing and don't bind, and the jacket fit is comfortable and not too restrictive. I've purchased a couple of suits from McGregor, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Don't hesitate to schedule an appointment. An update on Propersuit as some things have changed and I have more experience (3x 2 piece suits, 1x 3 piece suit, 1x long coat) with them as well. First off they don't do walk-ins - so ignore the silly 1 star review of someone who missed that information and never even got to see their product. Personnel: McGregor is doing the SF fittings now, although I was perfectly happy with Max before - McGregor runs a clean ship with great communication and of course top notch knowledge of his craft (I'd expect nothing less from the co-founder) Process: they have a referral credit system now. each new client referral = $100 off for you (put towards a suit, pants, jacket, anything really) and they are stackable. I would note that Propersuit tracks your referrals and will issue you a generic coupon code - but they are still a small business and will work to make sure your billing/invoice reflects credit appropriately. TL;DR - don't worry if you didn't get a coupon code or multiple codes, just make sure you work it out when you actually order your new pieces. Experience: I've referred multiple friends to Propersuit by now for various reasons (job interview suits, wedding suits, general grown-up updated to the wardrobe) and everyone has been above and beyond pleased with the service and experience. And over the years my body has changed but Propersuit has always been there to ensure that my suits adapt accordingly (within reason of course), whether that be taking up a hem, letting out a jacket, adjusting sleeves, etc. And it makes sense - would you take a referral from someone if they didn't look impeccable in their own suit? Overall Propersuit keeps getting better but still retains that small-business feel (in a good way). I went to Proper Suit after being unhappy with the way off-the-rack fit my body and I heard about them through a friend who has really nice clothes. I work out a lot and do cross fit so I've developed a shape that doesn't work for Brooks Brothers or Nordstroms etc. Fitting was super easy and McGregor is a man who can read people. It was kind of intense how he just understood my needs. He immediately knew that I wanted a cut that was versatile for my job in finance but also to wear to weddings and out on the town. I've never received an expert service like this for any product - even for things I spend way more money on. So I'm writing this review as I'm pretty shocked this service even existed. I think in SF technology has replaced a lot of things but the human interaction and eye cannot be replaced. McGregor is full-fledged genius but is also a no bs kind of guy who is pretty hilarious. Have 3 suits and counting - they seem to get better with each wear. Fabrics are from the best places in Italy and they've held up better than any of my more expensive off the rack suits. A reliably-well-dressed friend of mine said I was the best-dressed groom he had seen.
