However, while my glasses (varifocal, both normal and shades) are fine I did remember that service and after sales service left something to be desired so I decided to try Vision Express and I am glad that I did! Making the initial appointment was simple (online) and the whole process (even in these pandemic days) was a pleasant experience. The optician himself was excellent, professional and a delight to chat with on a variety of topics. And the good news is that my eyes are healthy and have barely changed - but I can keep the old ones as standbys in case of loss or breakage (although I paid a refundable (discount for my future glasses) £39 a pair to cover repair or replace the in case of breakage. Then took my time to select my frames from a bewildering array but ended up going with Ted Bakers for both. Excellent process and experience in getting fitted and selecting all my options. I would have my new glasses in 2 weeks but lo and behold barely a week later I get the text and call that they are ready. The next day I visit, try them on - perfect! Slight adjustments to the frames to make them sit optimally and I was smiling and ready to go! I will be back!

You can opt to have a photo taken of the inside of your eye too which is weird but interesting! There are good offers on their glasses. I got some very nice designer glasses for half price.

The staff are very helpful and you feel they are genuinely trying to help you select the best option, rather than trying to sell you the most expensive pair of glasses. The advice I received when shopping for my latest pair of glasses was excellent and I am really happy with my purchase. The only complaint I could make is a minor one and that is that when going for an eye test, you may end up waiting a fair while from when your appointment was supposed to take place.

I used them as I get a free eye test through work but it has to be used through them. They have always been very friendly and polite when I have been in and helpful. Made to wear face masks for eye test which is fine, optician didn't seem very helpful when placing test glasses over face she wasn't very personable as other opticians make sure glasses are behind ears properly etc. First lot of tests were with another person who was very friendly and helpful. Found the selection of glasses poor and unlike other opticians when you try on glasses they clean them right away. I didn't like trying on glasses with smudges and labels over the lenses. I will have an eye test elsewhere hopefully another place will be more modern with how they do the tests, find the test glasses bulky and old fashioned.

But I went to Toni and Guy for a free eye test and was amazed by the choice of frames and also the prices. I assumed that it would be expensive but they have fab offers on throughout the year and the staff are really knowledgable, helpful and friendly. It's a lovely relaxed atmosphere and I felt really well looked after. I have had contact lenses from them for a good few years now, and I think the package is really good value as the lenses and solutions are delivered to your door every few months, and all aftercare, lens checks and eye tests are included. On the downside, I have had a few problems with their direct debits system, which took several weeks to sort out. And it can be difficult to get an appointment at the weekend as the store gets very busy.

I do think the store was overstaffed, the staff working did seem a little loud and they were obviously talking to each other, I get having a conversation is fine when the stores quiet but they just became rather loud and even began to distract the lady working on my glasses, meaning I was worried she could have made a mistake or it could have ended up taking longer than it should have: she didn't make a mistake however and the staff were professional and able to answer whatever questions I had, so the service was okay. The selection was okay, they didn't have the more premium ranges which many other stores have but they did have a satisfactory selection from designer brands, I was told they didn't stock TAG Heuer anymore due to licensing issues which is why the person who was helping me didn't want to adjust my glasses too much as she couldn't replace them anymore if they did break. The TAG Heuer is only available in certain Vision Express stores now due to the strange recall. Pretty average store, I would feel happy using them while in Derby although Vision Express do have many better branches, this remains one of the better opticians within the mall and city of Derby. 3*

The range of frames are impressive and are split into sections by design and price to help you find your perfect style and price. Eye tests don't take long and staff are always thorough and helpful. I've never had a problem and would gladly return when I need an eyetest again. The only thing that may deter you is that the shop is very bright!
