My wife and I return to Blackburn once a year or so and typically stay in one of the areas hotels. Our needs differ from the average traveler as we are often hosting family and friends as they come and go to visit us. On this particular occasion we arranged a birthday party for various members of the family. This is where the Foxfields shines. Trying to coordinate these things from our home in the US is never easy but the hotel staff were incredibly easy to work with. Nothing was too much trouble. The buffet they put on for us on the night of the party was first class, but here comes the kicker. We had booked a local magician to help entertain the various attendees and in particular our 8 year old daughter. She couldn't have been more excited but unfortunately the guy failed to show up. The lady in charge of looking after us kept checking in through the evening and wanted to know if there was anything else they could do. My wife jokingly asked if she could find a magician in the next 30 mins? Five minutes later she was there with the number of a local guy she had seen someone use at the hotel previously and 30 mins later he was there performing. Just incredible service! The hotel is under new ownership and I am absolutely certain the aforementioned problems with the accommodation section of the hotel will be resolved in double quick time. In the meantime, the room standards are absolutely fine and the service as mentioned already, is fantastic. The quality of food in the hotel in general is also excellent. We ate breakfast each day and several other meals throughout the week. These people really deserve to succeed and I'm sure they will.

The service, particularly from the manager, the owners and the hotel reception team was great. Nothing too much trouble. The food, despite it being New Year's Eve was good and we both enjoyed the entertainment. The rooms are huge and comfy though the TV is a bit small! Breakfast was a full hot and cold selection and service was excellent, especially considering we were late down and they were trying to prepare the room for lunch! Looking forward to seeing how the hotel changes further as the new owners settle in.

To start, we did talk with the manager who was kind and accommodating and every staff member following was incredibly nice, but our check in person really colored the rest of our visit for us. We are platinum members of Marriott so as part of our membership, we have 5 nights to be used to upgrade the room we book, at the discretion of the hotel if they have it available. I had used 4 of my upgrades and additionally booked a junior suite because both me and my partner had to work and we needed the separate spaces. Worsley Park sent me a confirmation 3 days before our arrival that they accepted my use and that I would have an upgraded room. When we get to our room, it is absolutely not an upgraded room. Though they took my upgrade credits, we were in a normal standard room. I watched on my app as it showed I was supposed to be in a junior suite, downgraded to standard room after calling the front desk to see why we weren't in a junior suite. The man was incredibly rude and condescending. He told us he'd tell his manager and would call us from the room we were in to sort it out. It felt wrong to me to dirty up a room when we booked a junior and also had used my upgrade credits to ensure the larger room so after about 40 minutes of waiting, both of us starving from our 27 hour trip, and still not hearing from the manager, we went down to reception. The man was scowling at us, rudely telling us to just go back to our rooms. Just then, the manager walked up, listened to what happened, apologized, and told us we would be in a junior suite the following day and that the one upgrade credit that wouldn't be used that night would be returned to my account. It still has not. Every time we walked by reception, I'd see the man literally evil eyeing us as I smiled and waved. I cannot say I'd recommend a place that has such rude staff and the fact that when we first got in the rooms, there was random hair everywhere. Go anywhere else.

The staff are all awesome - always on hand to help and very courteous, but in a distinctly northern down-to-earth way which makes the place feel really welcoming (ie. not too posh!). The restaurant is always awesome - myself and wife #1 got married there 3 years ago (...at the hotel, not in the restaurant - we like food, but not that much...) and people still talk about the food and entertainment. We went back last night to celebrate not killing each other for 3 years and the Crayfish soup leapt out as the choice for me on the menu. If you do nothing else this year, visit this hotel and have the crayfish soup. Utterly, utterly amazing - by far the best soup I've ever had in my life. I had to point towards the other side of the room and shout "Look, the Nolan sisters!" to distract everyone while I licked the bowl clean. Oh, I forgot to mention the Sticky Toffee Pudding - add that to your to-eat list as well :)

You can either enjoy a delicious plate of hot food with all your standard full English ingredients, all hot, mostly fresh or tuck into a lighter, cold option of fruit, cereal or pastries, however I think the pastries are included in a different, cheaper package. You can go back as many times as you like for more food and there's a toast machine where you make your own toast and enjoy with butter or a selection of different jams and marmalade. The seating area is very bright and very clean. The staff were really friendly and helpful and you didn't get too much attention that it became annoying. The atmosphere was quite loud on my visit but it was a Saturday morning and all the youngsters were looking hungover and regretful. You can walk in here anytime to get a table however it may not be guaranteed as the customers of the hotel would come first I presume. Only issue; I didn't get any mushrooms as they were being prepared in the kitchen as I got my food and by the time they were ready, I was full. But very satisfied. I was less keen because it was approaching London prices in Manchester where there are good hotels for substantially lower cost. But it was for one night and by booking a way ahead the prices wasn't too outrageous. However the package with prepaid car parking (an extra GBP40 or $50+) seemed absurd so I figured that I would park nearby for less. All my nightmares seemed to come true as we drove up late that evening (about 10pm) long after dark up some back alley into the hotel and parking structure. Why were we arriving so late? Because we called up at 1pm to reserve a table at their restaurant (the River) and found they could not (would not) accommodate us even as I explained that we were guests. I would have cancelled right then and there but I had prepaid so ....... One more negative strike was the off-hand way we were dealt with over the phone and "greeted" when we checked in (i.e. NO greeting, really manager - please train your staff in the basic skills of hospitality!!) It all ended up very different. The room itself, the bed, the bathroom were all 5 star. The location of the hotel was better than I had expected - right on the river and a short walk over the bridge and you were in the center of things. I still predict that you will be more than disappointed as you arrive at the front of the hotel - but once you are inside, you are embraced by the refinement indoors, by a couple of the staff, and by the spaciousness. How good was it? I called the front desk and booked for a second night, requesting the same room, and was lucky to get it at the standard rate of GBP198. Will we be back - yes please. Never done this before - so it MUST be good! However I just hope the manager reads this review and acts on the training of his frontline staff! I went to complain half way through my stay and they told me it must have been me because it's on a pressure sensor. Made me feel that I was either been scammed by the hotel or that someone else had access to my room, maybe a previous guest. Both are not good and made me feel very uncomfortable in the hotel. I couldn't get service at the hotel bar for some reason too. I went in for a quick drink before meeting a friend and waited for 20 minutes without service. I then tried to order at the bar and was told it's table service only. Weird. Was I dressed in flip flops without a shirt you might ask? No, chinos with a button down shirt. I also wasn't told about the breakfast arrangements at check in so left the hotel each morning for breakfast. On top of that the "king bed" was 2 thin mattresses pushed together with scratchy sheets. It's a little inconvenient in terms of location so it has to be very good to justify that extra walk. This place fell massively short. Would not stay here again.

There are restaurants and to-go's all round as well as a terrific corner market. The manager, the front desk and housekeeping crew were friendly and accommodating. I arrived early from a transatlantic flight and they were thoughtful enough to get me into a room early and offered me a delicious, full English breakfast while I was waiting. My room was small and basic, but for me, even on a business trip, it was fine. As I stayed for business, WiFi was essential and buying it with my room, gave me a very reduced rate. The full English breakfast was a treat every morning! Here's what earned the 5 star rating for me: the bed and the bedding. It was the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. I have to go back next year for another week and I'll be staying here.

It really stands out on the seafront. We popped into the bar for drinks. The inside was nice but wasn't quite as stylish as I'd expected. I liked the big windows and round bar. Apparently they used to do cocktails but have replaced them with grand gins. Grand gins are popular at the moment and they suit the name but it seems a shame to completely get rid of cocktails. There was a good variety of gin available in the Spanish style, in a large glass with lots of ice and suitable garnishes. Mine was lovely and cost around £8.

They did have a little fridge in the room with drinks, chocolate bars and nuts etc. but remember to read the price list before you are tempted to eat any as it was about £1.50 for a mars bar and £2,.50 for a pack of biscuits. They have some lovely function rooms, we have been to a wedding reception here and it was fantastic, although the drinks were a little expensive. The views from the hotel window looking out across the sea were lovely and the we had a peaceful nights sleep with no noise from other guests Would definately stay there again
