The Rathaus is their city hall, but you wouldn't think so with how grand and big it is! The architecture is truly breathtaking. I was surprised to see that it was open on a Sunday. My boss and I went in before closing to look around and just awe. Apparently you can take a tour, but we didn't know this and opted for a quick "free" self-tour. Loved the back area as well. It's in the heart of the city center and is worth a visit!

Of all the cities in Germany I've been to, the Hamburg Rathaus was probably the most structurally appealing that I've seen. Really just like any other city center though... lots of shops, stores, restaurants, busy area of town.

    Bus station near by.

As the city hall in Hamburg, it definitely make the city shines even more. The building is not only huge, historical, and also grand. It looks really different with most of the city halls I have been visit. It certainly has it own charm. I also like to check out the little detail around the building, really brilliant. In front of the city hall, the square might looks a bit dull. But there is also popular for events. From time to time, it holds different events. The city hall itself is really close to most of famous and my favourite sights in Hamburg. From here to Alster only took around ten mins on foot, very convenient. It also got some nice cafes and restaurants. Although I have been this place already couple times, I still didn't really have a chance to pay a visit inside the building. Pity, I think, it must look as good as outside. I really like it this place. It probably is the most beautiful city hall I have seen so far in Germany.

The Rathaus is a pretty magnificent building right in the heart of Hamburg. You can just wander in off the street. Definitely a must see for visitors to the city, shame I don't know much about the place other than it's impressive. My only niggle with the place is the current exhibition they're running; although I personally don't have anything against it, I think perhaps it's a bit overt for children? So maybe if you're there as a family you might want to check it out before taking them in.

Love the details!!! "God is with us"

Awesome stop on your visit to Hamburg. Always a large Band playing German music in the square. Bus stops and local shops all around.

A bit of a must-see building when you come to Hamburg for the first time. They do tours, but I've not been on one yet

That's most likely because it's the largest historic warehouse complex of its kind (low-lying) in the world. The site has been historically protected since 1991 and subsequently restored. What's interesting is that these old red brick warehouses were uniquely built on top of a foundation of oak timbers. They were driven deep down (about 36 feet) into what was technically once considered marshy sandbars along the Elbe River. The wood with the surrounding sand petrified over time to create a solid foundation to build upon. This whole complex was needed to store global market items such as spices, tea, and coffee. The warehouses have entrances from the canal and at the street level for easy access. I was actually more impressed with the Gothic Revival look of the buildings as well as the steel bridges connecting them all together. We walked up and down the blocks and across the various different bridges to get a feel for the area. I don't think the pictures really convey the scenery here. It comes across as gloomy on rainy days, but it really wasn't that way in person. I really like that this area has become so popular. There are many attractions, shops, museums, cafés, and restaurants in and around it. The beautiful Water Castle can be seen from the furthest bridge known as Poggenmühlen. There's an International Maritimes Museum housed in one of the oldest buildings (1878) in the Speicherstadt. You'll see it right away when you see the massive propeller at the south entrance. The Sandtorkai-Hof and Speicherstadt Rathaus are other beautiful buildings that deserve a mention. There's way more to Hamburg than Speicherstadt and HafenCity. This was just a cool visit to the historical port of Germany. It's definitely a place that I would revisit if given the opportunity.
