My family has travelled to Skerries three times in the last 5 years. All three times we stayed at Hamilton House B&B. Everything was always up to par with what you would expect from a B&B in Ireland, the land of Céad Míle Fáilte. This was the reason my family booked again for our most recent stay, which was for 18 days. Unfortunately for us, we were really disappointed with Hamilton House. We booked with them over six months in advance and paid 50% deposit on all the rooms by wire transfer, which was what we were asked to do. We then learned that the owners were selling the B&B. This had us a bit worried, so we emailed the owners and were assured they were only "testing the market" and that the B&B is fully operational and has bookings through September. This put our minds at ease. However, Two days before leaving for Ireland we were told by the owner that she would not be providing the full Irish breakfasts that we were expecting and accustomed to at her B&B, but would be offered continental breakfasts only. The wonderful breakfast was one of the things we loved about Hamilton House. This was a huge disappointment, but we had no option to cancel with such short notice, much less find another accommodation in Skerries for our entire party. When asked about a discount for the room rate because we booked it under the expectation that she was running her B&B as usual, she scoffed and said, "I can cook you breakfast for an extra fee is that's what you want!" EXTRA FEE??? Are you kidding me? Because our options were limited, we had to suck it up and try not to let her attitude ruin our trip.
Unfortunately for us, things didn't get better. Upon arrival, we were denied the hospitality you come to cherish about visiting Ireland. I asked if we could have access to a tea kettle to make a cup of tea and was denied. We actually went out and purchased a kettle so we can make tea ourselves in the hallway upstairs. We also had to purchase toilet paper because the rooms were not looked after. The linens were changed once in 18 days. The "fresh" towels are in shreds and the rooms are dingy with dirty carpets. The pictures on some of the walls have broken glass. The TVs don't work properly and some, not at all. Wires hang from the ceiling where an older TV once sat. The continental breakfast, when it was offered, which I only saw twice, was horrible.
It was apparent to us that the only thing that mattered to Hamilton House was that they had our money. It was wired to them and we had no way to reverse the charges, which was 7000 Euro. This was not the way I wanted our trip back to Skerries to go. The lack of care and pride the owners of Hamilton House have in their establishment is an insult to Skerries, the people who visit and who call it home. Hamilton House has had over 20,000 Euro worth of business from my family over our last three visits. You would think they would cherish their repeat customers! I will NEVER stay at Hamilton House again, unless someone else buys it and restores it to the charm and appeal it once had. The lovely flower boxes, clean rooms, the fresh food and the hot tea to name a few. Skerries is such a beautiful town. The people are welcoming and friendly. Skerries deserves to have a business owner who truly cares about their establishment and welcomes visitors with the charm and hospitality that Ireland is known for. I REALLY hope they sell this B&B because they clearly don't want it or care about it anymore. read more
